  • Geology Around Portencross Castle
GEOLOGY AROUND About Portencross Castle Portencross has been inhabited for thousands of years. An archaeological dig found evidence of PORTENCROSS an Iron Age settlement on Auldhill, just behind Portencross Castle. The Iron Age lasted from around 800 BC to 100 BC. Portencross Castle was constructed in three phases starting in 1360. It was the home of a branch of the Boyds. The lands around Portencross were given to the Boyds of Kilmarnock by King Robert I CASTLE as reward for their help at the Battle of Bannockburn. A number of Royal Charters were signed at the castle and it had close links with King Robert II during that period. After the 1600s, it was occupied by local fishermen. The roof was destroyed in a gale in January 1739. By the 20th century, the Adams of Auchenames owned the castle. It became a scheduled ancient Sandy’s Creek monument in 1955. Mudstone Friends of Portencross Castle For Teachers The Friends of Portencross Castle (FOPC) produced this leaflet. Alex Gibson Abstract This paper summarises 80 years of ‘henge’ studies. It considers the range of monuments originally considered henges and how more diverse sites became added to the original list. It examines the diversity of monuments considered to be henges, their origins, their associated monument types and their dates. Since the introduction of the term, archaeologists have often been uncomfortable with it.

  • A BRIEF HISTORY of ST MOLIOS CHURCH SHISKINE This Booklet Is a Brief History of Church Life in and Round Shiskine, and in Particular of St Molios Church
A BRIEF HISTORY OF ST MOLIOS CHURCH SHISKINE This booklet is a brief history of church life in and round Shiskine, and in particular of St Molios Church. The Red Church was opened for worship on 21st July 1889. This event testified to the faith and commitment of generations of Christian people. The expansion has continued. In 1962 a Guild Room and kitchen were added to the church. In 1964 the kitchen and Vestry were let out to the Board of health twice a week for physiotherapy. Thereafter the toilets were altered to ensure access, for disabled people and improvements to the kitchen and hall were carried out. The profits generated by this booklet will benefit the fund set up to enable improvements to the Church & Hall. The new manse was built in 1978. Services on Sunday are well attended both by our members and visitors who flock to the island every year. The church of Scotland has adjusted ministry on the island so that since 2005 our parish has been linked not only to Lochranza and Pirnmill, but also to Brodick & Corrie. The arrangement is made possible by the appointment of a minister and a part-time Parish Assistant resident in Shiskine manse. The Minister and Reader conduct three services each on a Sunday, ensuring the tradition of morning worship can continue. Worship is always at 12:00 noon at St. Molios. Visitors to other churche in the linkage need to consult "The Arran Banner" or the church notice board for times of services which vary. The Sunday Club meets at the time of morning worship weekly during term-time and is open to children from four to eleven.

  • Kilwinning-Abbey-By-Ja-Ness.Pdf
John Ness was a keen local historian with a large collection of papers, books, pamphlets, charts and letters about Kilwinning and district, but being before the days of computers and the Internet, collating and editing this booklet would surely have meant many long hours searching through piles of books and notes. It was originally published in 1967, no doubt as part of the Abbey Church’s 400th anniversary celebrations (albeit a year or two late if the dates are correct), and was one of only a few collected sources of information about the Abbey. Of course, it is now long out of print and only a few dog-eared copies exist in libraries, but now it is accessible to the public once more. To make it easier to read on a computer screen, it hasn’t been recreated in its completely original form, but I have more or less kept the same layout. I made a few minor changes, adding a few commas here and there to make the sometimes slightly awkward sentence construction easier to read. If something reads a little strangely to modern eyes, that was the author’s style. Also, I corrected a very few obvious printing errors, and standardised words and phrases that were in bold type for no good reason. Full- or half-page photos which were in the middle of the booklet are now placed at the end. This is not meant as an academic work, so if anyone reads a statement which they believe is inaccurate or just plain wrong, the mistake is not mine.
