Letter of Support From: ACADEMICIANS, HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS, POLITICAL LEADERS AND INTELLECTUALS FROM AROUND THE WORLD WHO SUPPORT THE OPEN APPEAL OF OVER 200 BOSNIAN AND HERZEGOVINIAN INTELLECTUALS To: Members of the United Nations, OSCE, PIC, the United States of America, the European Union, and national offices of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sarajevo - Washington D.C. Berlin – London – Paris December 2011 for the RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE THOUSAND-YEAR-OLD MULTI-ETHNIC LIFE OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA, DESTROYED OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS This is a public call for support of the Open Appeal from over 200 Bosnian and Herzegovinian intellectuals to the members of the United Nations, OSCE, PIC, the USA and the European Union and the authorities of Bosna and Herzegovina to take all the measures in their power to restore and strengthen the democratic, multi-ethnic, multi- cultural and legally recognized state of Bosnia-Herzegovina. That state was broken and brutally destroyed by the 1992-1995 War. Its recovery has been effectively prevented by the indefinite attempt to implement the Dayton-Paris Accords (of November–December 1995). The state of Bosnia-Herzegovina should now be revived so that it can function again as a healthy European state. The Dayton settlement served unfortunately to consolidate, for the sake of peace, the effects of “ethnic cleansing” (genocide) in half of the Bosnia-Herzegovina territory. This is the major reason that we are now faced with the deepest, long-term, social and political crisis in the modern history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We remain hopeful that this mistake can be undone by the ICTY and by creation of a new Constitution.

  • Bosnia Guidebook
BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA PREFACE Bosnia and Herzegovina is a mountainous Balkan country bordering Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro. Bosnia and Herzegovina are two distinct regions divided by the Dinaric Alps. Bosnia takes its name from the Bosna River; Herzegovina from the word herceg (duke), the title of the region’s late 15th century rulers. The medieval Balkans experienced a bewildering series of population shifts and boundary changes until the Ottomans completed their conquest of the peninsula in the 16th century. Bosnia and Herzegovina remained under Ottoman rule until 1878, when the Congress of Berlin transferred it the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After World War II, Bosnia and Herzegovina was incorporated into Yugoslavia as one of six federal republics. The name Bosnia and Herzegovina is often shortened to Bosnia or BiH. The three main ethnic groups in present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina are Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), Bosnian Serbs (who are predominately Orthodox), and Bosnian Croats (who are predominately Catholic), and the languages spoken are Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian (formerly Serbo-Croatian). Yugoslavia’s unraveling was hastened by Slobodan Milosevic’s rise to power in 1986. Milosevic’s embrace of Serb nationalism led to inter-ethnic strife. In March 1992, the Bosnian government held a referendum on independence, and Bosnia’s parliament declared the republic’s independence on April 5, 1992. However, this move was opposed by Serb representatives, who favored remaining in Yugoslavia. Bosnian Serbs, supported by neighboring Serbia, responded with armed force in an effort to partition the republic along ethnic lines. The conflict continued through most of 1995, ending with the November 21, 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement, which was formally signed on December 14, 1995 in Paris.

While all mistakes in this work are mine, I am deeply grateful to everyone who has helped make this project possible. I thank the women of Bosfam in Tuzla (Bosnia-Herzegovina), for giving me the inspiration to start this project, and Iain Guest for his work with the survivors of Srebrenica. It was through his campaigns that I became interested in the history of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Alison Sluiter for handing me some of my first books on Bosnia. Elmina Kulasic and Amila Merdzanovic for all the inspiring conversations. I am also grateful to Audrey Helfant Budding for pointing me to relevant secondary sources. I am indebted to my friends, for supporting me through thick and thin. I am immensely grateful to Mehwash for her support till the very last minute, and for the long hours of conversation. To Kruts, Arts, Jiggie, May, Iryna and Nina for being simply wonderful.
