Although partially studied by a few Chinese scholars, it has never been fully displayed and discussed in the Western world. This set of sky maps (12 hour angle maps in quasi-cylindrical projection and a circumpolar map in azimuthal projection), displaying the full sky visible from the Northern hemisphere, is up to now the oldest complete preserved star atlas from any civilisation. It is also the first known pictorial representation of the quasi-totality of the Chinese constellations. This paper describes the history of the physical object – a roll of thin paper drawn with ink. We analyse the stellar content of each map (1339 stars, 257 asterisms) and the texts associated with the maps. We establish the precision with which the maps are drawn (1.5 to 4° for the brightest stars) and examine the type of projections used. -

Discovery of a Pulsar Wind Nebula Candidate in the Cygnus Loop 2 3 S Satoru Katsuda" Hiroshi Tsunemi , Koji Mori , Hiroyuki Uchida" Robert Petre , Shin'ya 1 Yamada , and Thru Tamagawa' ABSTRACT We report on a discovery of a diffuse nebula containing a pointlike source in the southern blowout region of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant, based on Suzaku and XMM-Newton observations. The X-ray spectra from the nebula and the pointlike source are well represented by an absorbed power-law model with photon indices of 2.2±0.1 and 1.6±0.2, respectively. The photon indices as well as the flux ratio of F nebula/ F po;.,li" ~ 4 lead us to propose that the system is a pulsar wind nebula, although pulsations have not yet been detected. If we attribute its origin to the Cygnus Loop supernova, then the 0.5- 8 keY luminosity of the nebula is computed to be 2.1xlo"' (d/MOpc)2ergss-" where d is the distance to the Loop. This implies a spin-down loss-energy E ~ 2.6 X 1035 (d/MOpc)2ergss-'. The location of the neutron star candidate, ~2° away from the geometric center of the Loop, implies a high transverse velocity of ~ 1850(8/2D ) (d/540pc) (t/lOkyr)- ' kms-" assuming the currently accepted age of the Cygnus Loop. John Gould and David Attenborough: seeing the natural world through birds and Aboriginal bark painting by Donna Leslie* Abstract The English naturalist and ornithologist, John Gould, visited Australia in the late 1830s to work on a major project to record the birds of Australia. In the early 1960s, around 130 years later, the English naturalist, David Attenborough, visited Australia, too. Like his predecessor, Attenborough also brought with him a major project of his own. Attenborough’s objective was to investigate Aboriginal Australia and he wanted specifically to look for Aboriginal people still painting in the tradition of their ancestors. Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory was his destination. Gould and Attenborough were both energetic young men, and they each had a unique project to undertake. This essay explores aspects of what the two naturalists had to say about their respective projects, revealing through their own published accounts their particular ways of seeing and interpreting the natural world in Australia, and Australian Aboriginal people and their art, respectively. The essay is inspired by the author’s curated exhibition, Seeing the natural world: birds, animals and plants of Australia, held at the Ian Potter Museum of Art from 20 March to 2 June 2013. An exhibition at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, Seeing the natural world: birds, animals and plants of Australia currently showing from 20 March 2013 to 2 June 2013, explores, among other things, lithographs of Australian birds published by the English naturalist and ornithologist John Gould [1804-1881], alongside bark paintings by Mick Makani Wilingarr [c.1905-1985], an Aboriginal artist from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory (Chisholm 1966; McCulloch 2006: 471; Morphy 2012). -

Poorly-populated star clusters may have photometric and structural properties not much different from asterisms, to the point that, in some cases, widely-used databases present conflicting classifications. Aims. We investigate the nature of a sample of challenging targets that have been classified either as star clusters or asterisms in different studies. A few objects are studied for the first time. Methods. The analysis employs 2MASS photometry, field-star decontamination, to enhance the intrinsic colour–magnitude diagram (CMD) morphology, and colour-magnitude filters, for high contrast stellar radial density profiles (RDPs). Results. Based on properties derived from field-star decontaminated CMDs, and structural parameters from RDPs, we find that Pismis 12, IC 1434, Juchert 10, Ruprecht 30, NGC 3519, Herschel 1, Mayer 1, and Muzzio 1 are open clusters with ages within 5Myr−1.3 Gyr. Ruprecht 129, 130, 140, and 146 are borderline cases, being rather poorly-populated, with evolutionary sequences and RDPs suggesting star clusters. Dolidze 39, BH 79, and Ruprecht 103, have CMDs and RDPs typical of asterisms. Conclusions. When a low stellar population is associated with a dense field contamination and/or important differential reddening, only a thin line separates star clusters and asterisms. -

Mapping the X-ray Sky with SRG: First Results from eROSITA and ART-XC Report of Contributions https://events.mpe.mpg.de/e/SRG2020 Mapping the X- … / Report of Contributions eROSITA discovery of a new AGN … Contribution ID : 4 Type : Oral Presentation eROSITA discovery of a new AGN state in 1H0707-495 Tuesday, 17 March 2020 17:45 (15) One of the most prominent AGNs, the ultrasoft Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy 1H0707-495, has been observed with eROSITA as one of the first CAL/PV observations on October 13, 2019 for about 60.000 seconds. 1H 0707-495 is a highly variable AGN, with a complex, steep X-ray spectrum, which has been the subject of intense study with XMM-Newton in the past. 1H0707-495 entered an historical low hard flux state, first detected with eROSITA, never seen before in the 20 years of XMM-Newton observations. In addition ultra-soft emission with a variability factor of about 100 has been detected for the first time in the eROSITA light curves. We discuss fast spectral transitions between the cool and a hot phase of the accretion flow in the very strong GR regime as a physical model for 1H0707-495, and provide tests on previously discussed models. New York: Springer, 2007, p. 574 Courtesy of http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-0-387-30400-7_697 Ibrāhīm ibn Sinān ibn Thābit ibn Qurra Glen Van Brummelen Born Baghdad, (Iraq), 908/909 Died Baghdad, (Iraq), 946 Ibrāhīm ibn Sinān was a creative scientist who, despite his short life, made numerous important contributions to both mathematics and astronomy. He was born to an illustrious scientific family. As his name suggests his grandfather was the renowned Thābit ibn Qurra; his father Sinān ibn Thābit was also an important mathematician and physician. Ibn Sinān was productive from an early age; according to his autobiography, he began his research at 15 and had written his first work (on shadow instruments) by 16 or 17. We have his own word that he intended to return to Baghdad to make observations to test his astronomical theories. He did return, but it is unknown whether he made his observations. Ibn Sinān died suffering from a swollen liver. Ibn Sinān's mathematical works contain a number of powerful and novel investigations. These include a treatise on how to draw conic sections, useful for the construction of sundials; an elegant and original proof of the theorem that the area of a parabolic segment is 4/3 the inscribed triangle (Archimedes' work on the parabola was not available to the Arabs); a work on tangent circles; and one of the most important Islamic studies on the meaning and use of the ancient Greek technique of analysis and synthesis.
