Pre-Treatment Instructions: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photorejuvenation Pre-Treatment Instructions: Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photorejuvenation v Discontinue ALL deliberate sun exposure, sun tanning, use of tanning beds, and the application of sunless tanning products at least one month (4 weeks) before your first treatment and throughout the treatment course. Failure to do so will increase the possibility of complications significantly. v Always use a sunblock with an SPF 30 or greater on exposed areas and reapply liberally every 2 hours while outdoors. Wear protective clothing and seek the shade! v Please reschedule your appointment if you have a sunburn or any kind of tan, including natural, spray, lotion, etc. v Discontinue the use of exfoliating creams such as Retin-A, Differin, Glycolic acid, alpha-hydroxy acid products 1 week prior to and during the entire treatment course, unless otherwise directed. v Discontinue aspirin products 10 days before your treatment as well as ibuprofen and vitamin E supplements 5 days before. Failure to do so may decrease the effectiveness of your treatments and may result in increased bruising and redness. v If you have a history of cold sores/herpes flares in the areas to be treated, please let Dr. Cunningham and her staff know. An anti-viral medication can be prescribed to prevent severe outbreaks during your treatment. v After your treatment, you will need to have: o A mild facial cleanser. o A high quality SUNBLOCK with an SPF 30 or greater. o A good moisturizer available for your after-care. We can recommend products for you, if needed. o Reusable ice/gel pack, which you will get from our office after your treatment. v On the day of your treatment, please do not apply any makeup, creams, perfumes or lotions to the areas to be treated. If applicable, shave just prior to the treatment (the pigment present in any hair in the area could increase discomfort). v Be aware that that there is a possibility of coincidental hair loss when treating pigmented lesions in hair-bearing areas. Please call if you have any questions before or after your treatment session. 617-734-1707 .

Take Tylenol or another pain reliever which contains no aspirin or ibuprofen, if needed. 4. Apply EMLA / ELA-Max / Topicaine (or other topical anesthetic) at least 1 hour before treatment under saran wrap, if needed. WHAT TO EXPECT ♦ BBL/Laser-treated hairs will still be visible / present after your treatment. However, they are now injured or destroyed at the level of the hair follicle (“root”) and will soon fall out (usually, within the next 2-5 days up to 2 weeks). ♦ The treated area may redden and/or swell somewhat. A mild sunburn sensation may be noticed for up to several hours after treatment. This is caused by the BBL/laser energy, and represents inflammation, and not infection. It is normal and expected part of healing process.

However, it’s defi- nitely safe to say that we often forget to give the skin on our body the same attention and Icare as our face. • Burn Care: Moisturizing Your Skin
www.nshealth.ca Burn Care 2020 Moisturizing Your Skin Instructions • Healed and grafted skin may be dry, scaly, and stiff. After bathing, apply any 1 of the following lotions to healed skin. › Aveeno® › Lubriderm® › Eucerin® › Neutrogena® Norwegian Formula Hand › Glaxal Base® Cream › Gold Bond® Unscented (Anti-itch) › Vaseline® Intensive Care (not regular) Choose the one that best suits your skin. These products may be available at your local pharmacy or drug store. You do not need a prescription. • Do not use creams or lotions recommended by family and friends until you have checked them out with your therapist first. Newly healed skin is very sensitive and may be damaged by the wrong lubricant. • Do not use mineral oil or Vaseline® ointment as they can lead to skin breakdown. • Elastic pressure garments can be damaged by products that have excessive oil, wax, lanolin, or petroleum ingredients. Water-based lotions are least harmful to your garments. Make sure the lotion is well absorbed (rubbed in) into your skin. • Apply lotion to all healed areas as often as needed to prevent dryness. You may need to use it every 3 to 4 hours. Use only enough lotion to lightly lubricate the skin. Gently rub the lotion in until it disappears. If not rubbed in completely, the lotion will dry on your skin and clog the pores. Your skin should feel soft and moist after putting lotion on, not greasy. • Rub the lotion on in thin layers. Massage it in gently at first, because new scars are fragile. As your scar matures, you can add more pressure to help make them less stiff.
