NEWSLETTER 140 (December 17, 2013) GM RAPPORT WINS EUROPEAN RAPID CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 Hungarian Grandmaster Richard Rapport is the new European Champion in Rapid chess for 2013! He won this year's edition of the European Rapid Chess Championship, which was held in Warsaw, Poland 14-15 December, 2013. Rapport scored 9.5 points and with the best tie-break among two more players won the title. Silver medal went to GM Vladimir Malachov from Russia, and bronze went to GM Tigran L. Petrosian from Armenia. GM Korobov scored 18.5 points, 1.5 point more than GM Vladislav Tkachiev from France, who won the silver medal. Bronze went to Bartosz Socko from Poland with 17 points and worse tie-break than Tkachiev. He defeated GM Boris Gelfand from Israel with 1.5-0.5 in the final. Nakamura won the first game with White in Grunfeld, and drew the seond game with Black, which was enough for the title. The games were broadcast Live with video commentary and analysis. The tournament was held in London, England 11-15 December, 2013 at the Olympiad Conference Centre. Other results: 3rd (1995, 1997, 2001), 4th (2000) Two Decades at the Top of Chess This is not a comeback, since Boris Gelfand never left the chess elite in the last twenty years. However, at the age of 41, the Israeli player has reached a new peak and is experiencing a a third wind. He is back in the world Top-10, officially as number 9 (in fact, a virtual number 5, if one takes into account his latest results that have not yet been recorded). He had not been ranked so high since 2006. Age does not seem to matter for this player who is unanimously appreciated in the field, both for his technical prowess and his personality. In Biel, he will not only be the senior player of the Grandmaster tournament, but also the top ranked and the Festival’s most loyal participant. Since his first appearance in 1993, he has come seven times to Biel; it is precisely at this Festival that he earned one of his greatest victories: in 1993, he finished first in the Interzonal Tournament (which, by then, was the only qualifying competition for the world championship), out of 73 participating grandmasters (including Anand and Kramnik). His victory in Biel against Anand is mentioned in his book, My Most Memorable Games.

    Hull 2016 Grandmaster Challenge

    Hull 2016 Grandmaster Challenge Sunday June 5th 2016 saw the third Hull Grandmaster Challenge following two successful events in 2014 and 2015 against Gawain Jones and David Howell respectively. The current world number 69 and second highest English ranked player in the world, Luke McShane came to Hull. The venue was the excellent Elizabethan Suite at the Mecure Royal Hull Hotel. The day followed the same format as previously – a blitz in the morning and then a full simultaneous in the afternoon. In the morning a blitz session Luke took on seven players (with grades ranging from 192 to 132) with just 60 seconds on his clock to five minutes on ‘ours’. A 7-0 whitewash to Luke, although he only just managed to defeat Eric Gardiner (182) with one second remaining on his clock! Ryan Burgin (192) had a n excellent position, but then lost twice on the same move (once on time and once for an illegal move – is this a record!). After three years of this blitz format the scores are: Grandmasters 18.5, Hull 1.5. Something doesn’t quite seem right here!! GM Gawain Jones 6/6 = 100% GM David Howell 5.5/7 = 79% GM Luke McShane 7/7 = 100% The afternoon simultaneous was formally opened by the Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber, Cllr Sean Chaytor who made the first move on the top board (d4). There were 31 opponents with players from Harrogate, Leeds and Sheffield supplementing local players. The first player to lose ‘fell’ after 85 minutes.
