Other results: 3rd (1995, 1997, 2001), 4th (2000) Two Decades at the Top of Chess This is not a comeback, since Boris Gelfand never left the chess elite in the last twenty years. However, at the age of 41, the Israeli player has reached a new peak and is experiencing a a third wind. He is back in the world Top-10, officially as number 9 (in fact, a virtual number 5, if one takes into account his latest results that have not yet been recorded). He had not been ranked so high since 2006. Age does not seem to matter for this player who is unanimously appreciated in the field, both for his technical prowess and his personality. In Biel, he will not only be the senior player of the Grandmaster tournament, but also the top ranked and the Festival’s most loyal participant. Since his first appearance in 1993, he has come seven times to Biel; it is precisely at this Festival that he earned one of his greatest victories: in 1993, he finished first in the Interzonal Tournament (which, by then, was the only qualifying competition for the world championship), out of 73 participating grandmasters (including Anand and Kramnik). His victory in Biel against Anand is mentioned in his book, My Most Memorable Games.

    NEWSLETTER 60 (January 23, 2012) ECU PRESIDENT SILVIO DANAILOV VISITED STRASBOURG FROM JANUARY 16-19 IN ORDER TO ASSIST DURING THE SESSION OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT Mr. Danailov, together with the Chairman of the ECU Chess in School Commission Mr. Jan Callewaert, was collecting signatures for the Written Declaration 50/2011 on the introduction of chess in the educational system of the European Union. Together with their team, they collected new 126 MEPs' signatures. Now the Declaration has 238 signatures in total and needs 143 more to succeed. The deadline is 15th of March. Having visited Strasbourg, Silvio Danailov also visited Tata Steel Tournament in Wijk aan Zee (Holland). Second is WIM Anna Hairapetian with 8.5 points, WGM Evgeniya Doluhanova finished third with 6.5 points.     Junior Four Nations League - a report by Mike Truran This season’s competition was bigger and better than ever, with teams of all ages competing over three weekends in two separate divisions. Like its senior equivalent, the Junior Four Nations Chess League (J4NCL) has the advantage of taking place in excellent qual- ity playing conditions in premier hotels across the UK. This season’s competition took place at Barcelo UK’s flagship Hinckley Island Hotel, so parents could also have a relaxing week- end away at a top four-star hotel while their children locked horns over the chess board. And with bedrooms and meals at the usual discounted 4NCL rates it meant that a family weekend away wasn’t going to break the bank either. 1 As well as the high quality playing conditions, the J4NCL and winning team members being presented with medals differentiates itself from most other junior events in and a trophy. So everyone got something to take home as offering free structured coaching between rounds for all a memento. the children, and the coaches also go through games on a one-to-one basis with any juniors who finish their games The standard of the chess was generally excellent, and early.
