ELDER ABUSE Shame on Us SATURDAY, APRIL 7, 2018 Coming Monday ELDER ABUSE Shame on us Beginning Monday, The Item will publish a three-day series focusing on a disturbing but real phenomenon: elder abuse. As the nation ages and the number of seniors increase and live longer in their homes, physical, emotional, and nancial elder abuse are rising. In this series, we tell the stories of vic- tims of emotional abuse, reveal disturbing data on how many seniors are affected, and detail the state’s efforts to combat abuse. We detail cases of abuse and the challeng- es of prosecuting them. We also examine nancial exploitation of seniors and how to identify it. The series also offers ways for seniors to protect themselves and how you can help an elder who may be facing abuse. At Thursday’s meeting, Architect Gene Raymond of Raymond Design Associates, Inc. presented two potential layout options for a school on the Bud Orne property, which is more than 3.5 acres in size, and one for the Bell property. The building committee narrowed 22 potential sites down to the two options at a previous meeting. The smaller Bud Orne site would have required the 86,000-square-foot school to be taller, and studies showed the proposed three-story building would have cast shad- ows on more than a dozen homes, including one that would have been blocked from sun- light all day. Committee member Ben Berman thanked Raymond for presenting an additional op- tion for the Bud Orne site. “It was very important we looked at Bud at every angle possible,” said Berman. “We exhausted every angle of Bud and the mes- sage we’ve sent is that we tried everything to make it work.” Superintendent Maryann Perry said she hoped the Bud Orne site would be a good t, but ultimately supported the Bell option. “I so wanted the school to be on the Bud Orne Classical students try site,” said Perry. “I felt it was the opportunity Vietnam vets have their hands at boxing MARBLEHEAD, A7 their day in Lynn By Gayla Cawley By Thomas Grillo ITEM STAFF INSIDE ITEM STAFF SAUGUS — Lynn Classical High Classical In Lynn LYNN — When Robert Quinn re- President of School students packed a punch for physical edu- turned home from Vietnam in 1967, the VVA Chap- their trip to Title Boxing Club this cation teacher Iconic TV show ‘Lost in Space’ there was no ticker tape parade, ter 908, Walter week. 150 Brands Have Joined Emmanuel Macron’s “Fashion Pact” to Make the Fashion Industry More Sustainable AUGUST 26 , 2 019 1:4 3 PM by EMILY FARRA In July, Amber Valletta partnered with Stella McCartney and Extinction Rebellion to broadcast an urgent message about climate change. A cursory Google search for this weekend’s G7 summit pulls up headlines largely dominated by President Trump’s behavior: At Saturday’s dinner, he insisted the group reinstate Russia, which was removed from the then-G8 in 2014; he made several conflicting statements about the China tariffs; and on and on. But there’s some news that’s actually worth talking about: namely, that French president Emmanuel Macron (who hosted this year’s summit) debuted his new Fashion Pact, a set of shared objectives the fashion industry can work toward to reduce its environmental impact. This comes three months after Kering chair and CEO François-Henri Pinault revealed he’d been selected by Macron to establish those objectives and assemble a “coalition” of brands at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit. Right off the bat, PVH (which owns Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger) signed on, and at this weekend’s summit, Macron reported that 32 companies (and roughly 150 brands) have joined thus far. The Pact is noteworthy for many reasons. For starters, it’s a first-of-its- kind initiative that’s uniting the biggest names in fashion, many of whom are known competitors. Back in Copenhagen, Pinault explained: “Despite what we’re doing [to reduce our impact alone], things are not moving. We really need to define targets together.

present the Environmental Media Awards Celebrating OUTSTANDING achievement within the ENTERTAINMENT and ENVIRONMENTAL communities #EMAAWARDS Saturday, September 23, 2017 Letter from the presenting sponsor Good evening ladies and gentleman, On behalf of Toyota and Lexus, welcome to the 27th annual Environmental Media Awards! Tonight we are honored to serve as presenting sponsors and celebrate the 17th anniversary of our partnership with the Environmental Media Association. Over the past 17 years, we’ve helped honor the thought leaders that inspire millions to lead more environmentally conscious lives. Tonight we continue to celebrate the efforts of the entertainment industry and celebrities that shape our culture. After all these years, we are still inspired by EMA’s efforts to promote environmental awareness using the powerful medium of entertainment. Tonight we’ve brought an inspiring vehicle line up to the party. The 2017 Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle returns to the green carpet. As one of the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, the Toyota Mirai is a four-door, mid- size sedan with performance that fully competes with traditional internal combustion engines – but uses no gasoline. Instead, Mirai creates electricity on demand using hydrogen, oxygen and a fuel cell, and emits nothing but water vapor in the process. Lexus is excited to showcase its all-new hybrid luxury sedan, the LS 500h. With smooth power and an estimated 33 miles per gallon on the highway, it has a range of more than 600 miles of luxurious driving. On sale in February 2018 with a starting price around $80,000, the LS 500h will be the luxury sedan of choice for environmentally minded drivers.

  • Chapter 1 Paulie!
Chapter 1 Paulie! Blanca! Lola! Christopher! Over here! How about one of the Santisi family all together!” the paparazzi shout as we’re bathed in a meteor shower of flashing lights. It’s blinding as we make our way down the photo-frenzied Red Carpet for Vanity Fair’s annual post-Oscar bash—Hollywood’s primo party of the year. My mother tugs my older brother, Christopher, and me to her and shoots her husband a pleading look. “Please, Paulie, just one of the four of us,” her blood red lips purr, her Mediterranean-colored eyes sparkling through the smoky Paris-runway-ready eye shadow that François Nars himself applied not five hours ago at Villa Santisi. “We can put it on the Christmas card.” Only my crazy Jewish mother would send out Christmas cards—from the VF Red Carpet. Even if we’re not the perfect Norman Rockwell family, my mother would like us to pose for the cameras as if we were. I swear my mother could stand here all night as if she’d won her own Oscar, pirouetting and fanning out the skirt of her shocking pink ruffled satin Chanel gown for the photographers, canting one olive Pilates’d thigh forward (“Slims the profile, Lola, you should try it”). Even the black diamond Neil Lane dragonfly pinning back her shoulder- length platinum hair seems to be begging for a photo. She’s acting like she’s back in Irving Penn’s studio posing for one of the many 1970s Vogue covers she graced. My father rolls his eyes.
