A review of the ecology of the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in Europe Jaap L. Mulder De Holle Bilt 17, NL-3732 HM De Bilt, the Netherlands, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) was introduced from East Asia into the former USSR between 1928 and 1957. Since then it has colonised a large part of Europe and is considered an invasive alien spe- cies. This paper reviews the current knowledge on the ecology of the raccoon dog in Europe, undertaken as a basis for a risk assessment. The raccoon dog is about the size of a red fox (Vulpes vulpes). In autumn it accumulates fat and, in areas with cold winters, it may stay underground for weeks. It does not dig and often uses badger (Meles meles) setts and fox earths for reproduction. Raccoon dogs are monogamous. Each pair occupies a fixed home range the periphery of which often overlaps with that of neighbours. Pre-breeding population density usually is between 0.5 and 1.0 adults/km2. Habitat use is characterised by a preference for shores, wet habitats and deciduous forests. Foraging raccoon dogs move quite slowly, mostly staying in cover. They are omnivorous gatherers rather than hunters. Their diet is variable, with amphibians, small mammals, carrion, maize and fruits being important components. There is no proof of a negative effect on their prey populations. Raccoon dogs produce a relatively large litter of usually 6 to 9 cubs. After six weeks the den is left and the whole family roams around. From July onwards the cubs, still only half grown, start to disperse. -

These observations are critically analysed here. Firstly a short overview is presented of the internal and external differences between the wildcat (Felis silvestris) and the domestic cat (Felis catus), and of the taxonomy and distribution of the wildcat. Important internal differences are the length of the intestinal tract (wildcat: <170 cm; domestic cat: >155 cm) and the intracranial volume (wildcat: >31 cm3; domestic cat: <38 cm3). The most distinguishing external differences are outlined. There are four recognisable groups of Felis silvestris: a. the thickset, heavily furred forest cats of Europe – the silvestris group; b. the light-bodied steppe cats of Asia – the ornata group; c. the slim, long-legged cats from Africa – the lybica group; and d. the domestic cat which can be found all over the world – the catus group. The closest wildcat habitats to the Netherlands lie to the south (in the Eifel hills, Germany, and the Ardennes, Belgium) and the east (in the area between the river Weser and the Harz mountains, Germany). -

Jacobsen{ Danish Institute for Fisheries Research, Deptment of Inland Fisheries, Vejlsùvej 39, DK-8600 Silkeborg, Denmark (Accepted 21 May 1998) Abstract The abundance of mink, otter, and polecat may be inferred from records of their scats, and the feeding biology of the species is often studied by analysis of skeletal remains and other hard parts in faeces. However, in some situations it is dif®cult to distinguish between faeces from these three mustelid species. A method is described for assigning faeces to these three mustelid species, based on analysis of DNA extracted from their scats. Mustelid-speci®c primers were developed for PCR ampli®cation of a part of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene, and two restriction enzymes were found to detect species-speci®c sequence variation. Analysis of DNA from different faecal samples showed that the results were reproducible and that the approach provided an ef®cient method of species identi®cation. The sector has improved significantly in line with the historical reforms have taken place until this very day and proved its efficient and respectable position. As of today, Turkish merchant fleet has shown great development and is diversified in terms of vessel type, tonnage and fleet volume. Transportation capacity of Turkish maritime sector holds the 15th place with 29.3 million DWT in the list of countries controlling the largest fleet of the world (1000 GT and over). As for luxury yacht building sector, Turkey sits at 3rd place while the yearly production capacity of our shipyards have reached to 4.51 million DWT. Our Chamber has been active in carrying out activities before relevant domestic and foreign Institutions and Organizations in order to perform its policies which are constituted with the purpose of increasing the contribution of maritime sector to the national economy and ensuring its competitiveness with the rest of the world. Our ultimate objective is to ensure shipping industry to be considered under “National Government Policy”. The Maritime Sector Report has been prepared as a result of an intense study in order to include the development of the maritime sector in Turkey as well as the world and to examine the circumstances of the maritime sector as of 2019 with its various aspects. During the preparation process of the report, our aim has been to examine, neutrally, the circumstances of maritime sector in Turkey and the world in 2019 and to constitute the report on the basis of scientific data. -

National Symposium On The Aegean Islands, 2-3 July 2004, Gökçeada - Çanakkale OPENING SPEECH Ali KURUMAHMUT Prime Ministry of Navigation Counsellorship Marine Transportation General Manager The Aegean Sea lies between the Turkish and the Greek main lands, as well as between the Morea peninsular and the southwestern edges of the Anatolian coasts, with the extension of the islands of Çuha, Küçük Çuha, Girit, Kaşot, Kerpe and Rodos that constitute its outer natural boundaries. In terms of the geographical structure, the Aegean, a semi-closed sea, has geological and geo-morphological characteristics peculiar to itself: it has about 1800 islands, islets and rocks of various sorts, as well as a number of geographical formations, scattered al over the Sea. There is little wonder that all these characteristics make the Aegean Sea a special one. The Aegean dispute between Greece and Turkey has been complicated for a number of reasons: for instance, there are many islands in the Aegean that Turkey ceded to Greece through international treaties. And these islands lying in the natural extension of the Turkish mainland surround Anatolia from north to the south. But Athens makes claims of sovereignty over many islands, islets, and rocks though Ankara never ceded any of them to Greece officially. The most obvious and famous case would be the Kardak rocks crisis that erupted between Turkey and Greece at the beginning of 1996. These complications make the Aegean a sea that is of special importance among the seas of the world. It is possible to divide the Aegean Islands into five categories in terms of their geographical locations, geological and geo-morphological characteristics, the historical perspectives of the sovereign powers to which they belonged, the manner in which the sovereignty over them was determined through international treaties, as well as their importance for geo-political and strategic purposes. -

Керченский филиал («ЮгНИРО») ФГБНУ «АзНИИРХ» e-mail: [email protected] Исследуются особенности полового созревания черноморского калкана Scophthalmus maeotica maeotica (Pallas, 1814). Определена длина, при которой калкан достигает половой зрелости, при помощи пробит-метода на основе функции максимального правдоподобия в программной среде R. Пробит-анализу были подвергнуты две выборки размером 199 и 102 особи. Между выборками не были обнаружены статистические различия, данные были объединены. Длина самок, при которой 50 % особей достигли половой зрелости, составила 39,8 (37,5 ÷ 41,2) см. Самцы созревают раньше самок при длине меньшей, чем 35 см. Полученные результаты статистически значимы (при уровне 2 значимости P = 0,95), проверка выполнена при помощи критерия . Действующая мера промыслового размера (40 см) является адекватной и препятствует вылову неполовозрелых особей. Этот вид является важным объектом промысла в Черном море и вслед- ствие высокого многолетнего пресса рыболовства [4] нуждается в изучении и регулировании про- мысла. Основная цель данной работы – определение длины, при которой черноморский калкан до- стигает половой зрелости. Зависимость длины и наступления полового созревания у рыб давно вызывает интерес у иссле- дователей ввиду практического и научного интереса. Обычно исследователи принимали за длину созревания минимальную длину половозрелой особи. Однако такая характеристика не является на- дежной, полученные таким способом данные имеют большое расхождение и не обладают статисти- ческой точностью. -
