We would love it if some folk were able to walk the full 70 miles with us, but recognise that not everyone will have the time – or fitness – to spend 8 days walking. - The Story of a Man called Daltone - “A semi-fictional tale about my Dalton family, with history and some true facts told; or what may have been” This story starts out as a fictional piece that tries to tell about the beginnings of my Dalton family. We can never know how far back in time this Dalton line started, but I have started this when the Celtic tribes inhabited Britain many yeas ago. Later on in the narrative, you will read factual information I and other Dalton researchers have found and published with much embellishment. There also is a lot of old English history that I have copied that are in the public domain. From this fictional tale we continue down to a man by the name of le Sieur de Dalton, who is my first documented ancestor, then there is a short history about each successive descendant of my Dalton direct line, with others, down to myself, Garth Rodney Dalton; (my birth name) Most of this later material was copied from my research of my Dalton roots. SANKEY NAVIGATION THE FIRST LANCASHIRE CANAL BY T. C. BARKER, M.A. Read 16 December 1948 > HEN Arthur Young visited the north of England in w 1771 he went " to Manchester with design not only to view the manufactures of that town but to make it my headquarters from thence to go the tour of his Grace the Duke of Bridgewater's navigation about which such wonders are abroad." 11 ' In the account of his tour in the north Young devoted forty- six pages, complete with maps and diagrams, to a description of these wonders: the twelve sets of " canal doors ", the underground tunnel deep into the hillside at Worsley and the aqueduct over the Irwell at Barton were all greeted with excited enthusiasm. Young's description, Smiles's appealing character sketch of James Brindley 12 ', and the reputation which the Bridge- water Canal gained by its magnificence, have together caused some historians, following Young's example, (3) to concentrate their attention upon the Worsley-to-Manchester Canal at the expense of the Sankey Navigation. Professor Mantoux, for instance, wrote that the Worsley Navigation was "the first real canal in England " (4), a belief which has received further wide publicity from Dr. Trevelyan ^ Arthur Young, A Six Months' Tour Through the North of England (London, 2nd edn., 1821), Vol. Ill, p. 187. 121 S. XLVH. VOL. C-, AND L. OF S. H. PARBOLD. CHAPCL, DOUGLAS SOME HISTORICAL NOTES ON THE CHAPEL OF OUR BLESSED LADY, PARBOLD, LANCASHIRE. By William Frederick Price. Read 5th December, 1895. HIS ancient and interesting ecclesiastical T edifice, better known as " Douglas Chapel," was demolished in 1878. It was situated at the foot of Parbokl Hill, in the township of Parbokl, and lay hidden in a picturesque and sequestered valley. Parbokl Hill, with its extensive stone quarries, is a familiar object to travellers on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway between Southport and \Vigan. It is the most prominent feature of a range consisting of Parbokl, Hunters, and Harrock Hills ; and on the opposite side of the valley is another range, comprising Ashurst, Upholland, and Billinge. Parbokl and Ashurst Hills stand like sentinels at the neck of a beautiful and well- timbered valley, which is watered by the River Douglas, 1 a sluggish stream, with high banks, veiled with alder, willows, and poplar.
