O’Leary4, Dennis P. O’Brien5, Joan R. Coates5, Gary S. Johnson3 and Karin Hultin Jäderlund6* Abstract Background: Hereditary ataxias with similar phenotypes were reported in the Smooth-Haired Fox Terrier, the Jack Russell Terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier. However, segregation analyses showed differing inheritance modes in these breeds. Recently, molecular genetic studies on the Russell group of terriers found independent mutations in KCNJ10 and CAPN1, each associated with a specific clinical subtype of inherited ataxia. The aim of this study was to clarify whether or not Smooth-Haired Fox Terriers with hereditary ataxia and dogs of other related breeds harbor either of the same mutations. A sub goal was to update the results of KCNJ10 genotyping in Russell group terriers. Findings: Three Smooth-Haired Fox Terriers with hereditary ataxia and two Toy Fox Terriers with a similar phenotype were all homozygous for the KCNJ10 mutation. The same mutation was also found in a heterozygous state in clinically unaffected Tenterfield Terriers (n = 5) and, in agreement with previous studies, in Jack Russell Terriers, Parson Russell Terriers, and Russell Terriers. Conclusions: A KCNJ10 mutation, previously associated with an autosomal recessive spinocerebellar ataxia in Jack Russell Terriers, Parson Russell Terriers, and Russell Terriers segregates in at least three more breeds descended from British hunting terriers.

Results show that, compared to pure breed dogs, cross-breed dogs were more likely to be reported in welfare complaints. Poisoning, lack of veterinary support, abuse, and being left unattended in a hot vehicle were common complaints in pure breed dogs; while insufficient shelter, exercise and food/water, as well as overcrowding and abandonment, were more commonly reported in cross breed dogs. Utility breeds, terriers and working dogs were most likely to be reported, while toy, non-sporting breeds and gundogs were least likely to be reported. Common complaint types for utility dogs were: insufficient food/water, shelter and exercise, and poor living conditions; for terriers: abandonment, intentional abuses and killing or injuring another animal; for working dogs: insufficient food/water, shelter and exercise; for toy dogs: lack of veterinary care, overcrowding and staying in a hot vehicle alone; for non-sporting dogs: lack of veterinary care, being left in a hot vehicle unattended and poor body conditions; and for hounds: killing or injuring another animal, intentional abuses and poor body conditions.

Late onset ataxia in Parson Russell Terriers Dogs affected by late onset ataxia (LOA) suf- fer from steadily deteriorating coordination problems of the musculoskeletal system and loss of balance. Initial clinical symptoms are usually seen starting at 6-12 months of age. The disease can be genetic and transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait to offspring. Using a new genetic test this form of ataxia in Parson Russell Terriers can be detected. Thus, through selective breeding programs it is possible to avoid births of affected dogs. Progressive retinal atrophy (rcd4-PRA) found in several new breeds PRA is a group of inherited photoreceptor disorders in the retina which are caused by various mutations in different breeds. rcd4-PRA manifests no earlier than in the second year of life and is, therefore, also refer- red to as late onset PRA (LOPRA). It is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. An early sign of this form of PRA is night blindness in affected dogs. Thus far, the genetic predisposition for this disease could be detected in the Irish Setter and Gordon Setter. The causative mutation of rcd4-PRA has also been found in the following breeds: Australian Cattle Dog, English Setter, Irish Red & White Setter, Small Munsterlander, Polish Lowland Sheepdog (PON) and Tibetan Terrier.
