The Editors do not doubt that these will prove especially interesting to Derbyshire people. In Volume V they hope to print further instalments of town registers in the shape of those of St. Michael's and also some village registers. It will be noticed that St. Alkmund's register begins at the earliest possible date, 1538, but of the remainder, two do not start till the seventeenth century and one, that of Quarndon, synchronizes with the passing of Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act. 1379092 It will be convenient to give here a list of the Derby- shire parishes of which the Registers have been printed in this series: Volume I.     THE TIGER Royal British Legion wreaths displayed at the Menn Gate, Ypres August 2018 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND BRANCH OF THE WESTERN FRONT ASSOCIATION ISSUE 84 – OCTOBER 2018 CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN Welcome again, Ladies and Gentlemen, to the latest edition of The Tiger. Our cover photograph this month, courtesy of Lynn and Brian Roffee, shows wreaths of the Royal British Legion displayed at the Menin Gate, Ypres, following the 90th anniversary commemorations of their first pilgrimage to Ypres in 1928. The original “Great” Pilgrimage saw over 11,000 Great War veterans and War Widows return to, or visit, the battlefields of France and Flanders, the Pilgrimage culminating in a parade and ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, unveiled in July of the previous year. 90 years later, 1,150 Branches of the Royal British Legion were represented at the Menin Gate to mark the centenary of the launch of the 100 Days Offensive. One hopes, therefore, that other such events will thus continue to be held once the date of 11th November 2018 has passed. The Great War will not cease to have happened after this landmark date, although the focus the nation deigns to bestow upon it will lessen and the funding available for projects connected to it will cease.

    The origins of the New Connexion of General Baptists in Leicestershire1 by Edwin Welch The New Connexion of General Baptists originated with an attempt by Lady Huntingdon to introduce Methodism into the parishes near Donington Park where she lived. The Methodists soon separated from the Established Church, adopted Baptist opinions, and formed a denomination which spread throughout the Midlands in the nineteenth century. In 1772 Josiah Thompson compiled an account of the older dissenting congregations in England and Wales. At the end of the section on Leicestershire, he added, 'it may be proper here to bring to view and give an account of some protestant Dissenters who are but little known but who are likely to make a considerable figure among our Churches.' He then named the places where they met: Barton in the Beans, Hugglescote, Markfield, Packington, Castle Donington, Diseworth, Kegworth, Loughborough, Quorn and Hinckley in north-west Leicestershire; Melbourne and Little Hallam in south Derbyshire; Longford in Warwickshire; and Great (or East) Leake and Kirkby Woodhouse in Nottinghamshire.2 Thompson described these churches as Methodist. In this he was not strictly accurate, for although Methodist in origin they were Baptist by 1772. More specifically, they formed part of the New Connexion of General Baptists. He was, however, correct in predicting that they would become important. For this small group of dissenters in the East Midlands was to play an interesting part in the great evangelical revival of the eighteenth century and a still more significant part in the re-awakening of the old General Baptist movement. Since their origins in the seventeenth century, Baptists in England had been divided in doctrine on the question of salvation between the Particular Baptists, who were Calvinist and believed that only some would be saved, and the General Baptists, who were Arminian and believed that all could be saved.

    ERNEST MORRIS The Church Bells of Leicester (Diocese & County) Introduction This work is an unpublished manuscript. Two volumes (covering parishes A-L and L-W respectively) are in the possession of the Leicestershire Archaeological Society and kept in the Society’s Library at the Leicester Guildhall. A third volume belonging to the set (covering Bellfounders of Leicester) is in private ownership and its present whereabouts are unknown. A photocopy exists, however, in the possession of George Dawson and this has been used to complete the set for this scanned version of the work. The descriptive details from the title-pages of the three volumes are as follows: From these images it is quite clear that the three parts, although no longer kept together, belong to the same work. The work is not dated, but it is clear from examination of the entries that it was compiled - as is inevitable with surveys requiring visits to churches across a wide area - over several decades. He noted the dates of some of his inspection visits. The dated entries are mainly of the 1920s, but the range is between 1909 (Kirby Muxloe) and the 1950s. He continued to add material to the volume right up to 1961-2, but mainly from information supplied by others (especially by John Taylor & Co, the Loughborough bellfounders and bellhangers). It is not possible to indicate a single date or even a range of dates with accuracy. Nor is it possible to suggest when Morris started to put the material together in these volumes, except that by the 1940s he was making annotations to entries already made.

( Diam. 36! ) The Charity Commissioners in their Report (1837), p. 178, mention " a parcel of land, called Eight o'clock Bell Land," in the parish of Higham-on-the-Hill, the rent of which was stated to them to have been formerly paid to the parish of Stoke for ringing the eight o'clock bell. It was comprised in certain bequests made by Thomas Daville, Esq., in 1714. The Commissioners say no Curfew had been rung for forty years or more, neither could they trace any account of such bequest.
