It was comprised in certain bequests made by Thomas Daville, Esq., in 1714. • Church Bells. Part 1. Rev. Robert Eaton Batty
CHURCH BELLS BY THE REV. ROBERT EATON BATTY, M.A. The Church Bell — what a variety of associations does it kindle up — how closely is it connected with the most cherished interests of mankind! And not only have we ourselves an interest in it, but it must have been equally interesting to those who were before us, and will pro- bably be so to those who are yet to come. It is the Churchman's constant companion — at its call he first enters the Church, then goes to the Daily Liturgy, to his Con- firmation, and his first Communion. Is he married? — the Church bells have greeted him with a merry peal — has he passed to his rest? — the Church bells have tolled out their final note. From a very early period there must have been some contrivance, whereby the people might know when to assemble themselves together, but some centuries must have passed before bells were invented for a religious purpose. Trumpets preceded bells. The great Day of Atonement amongst the Jews was ushered in with the sound of the trumpet; and Holy Writ has stamped a solemn and lasting character upon this instrument, when it informs us that "The Trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised." The Prophet Hosea was com- manded to "blow the cornet in Gibeah and the trumpet in Ramah;" and Joel was ordered to "blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm." The cornet and trumpet seem to be identical, as in the Septuagint both places are expressed by σαλπισατε σαλπιγγι.

As promised in the last volume of the Marriage Registers of Derbyshire, the marriage records of St. Alkmund's form the first instalment of the Registers of the County Town. The Editors do not doubt that these will prove especially interesting to Derbyshire people. In Volume V they hope to print further instalments of town registers in the shape of those of St. Michael's and also some village registers. It will be noticed that St. Alkmund's register begins at the earliest possible date, 1538, but of the remainder, two do not start till the seventeenth century and one, that of Quarndon, synchronizes with the passing of Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act. 1379092 It will be convenient to give here a list of the Derby- shire parishes of which the Registers have been printed in this series: Volume I. THE TIGER Royal British Legion wreaths displayed at the Menn Gate, Ypres August 2018 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND BRANCH OF THE WESTERN FRONT ASSOCIATION ISSUE 84 – OCTOBER 2018 CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN Welcome again, Ladies and Gentlemen, to the latest edition of The Tiger. Our cover photograph this month, courtesy of Lynn and Brian Roffee, shows wreaths of the Royal British Legion displayed at the Menin Gate, Ypres, following the 90th anniversary commemorations of their first pilgrimage to Ypres in 1928. The original “Great” Pilgrimage saw over 11,000 Great War veterans and War Widows return to, or visit, the battlefields of France and Flanders, the Pilgrimage culminating in a parade and ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, unveiled in July of the previous year. 90 years later, 1,150 Branches of the Royal British Legion were represented at the Menin Gate to mark the centenary of the launch of the 100 Days Offensive. ABOVE: Standards at the Menin Gate (photograph courtesy of the Royal British Legion) RIGHT: The Hinckley Branch Wreath (photograph courtesy of Lynn & Brian Roffee) The splendour of this occasion is surely an apt reminder that not every anniversary has to be a “centenary” to be worthy of remembrance. One hopes, therefore, that other such events will thus continue to be held once the date of 11th November 2018 has passed. The Great War will not cease to have happened after this landmark date, although the focus the nation deigns to bestow upon it will lessen and the funding available for projects connected to it will cease.

  • Digital Synthesis of Sound Generated by Tibetan Bowls and Bells
ARCHIVES OF ACOUSTICS Copyright c 2016 by PAN – IPPT Vol. 41, No. 1, pp. 139–150 (2016) DOI: 10.1515/aoa-2016-0014 Digital Synthesis of Sound Generated by Tibetan Bowls and Bells Andrzej GOŁAŚ, Roman FILIPEK Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics AGH University of Science and Technology Al. A. Mickiewicza 30, 30-059 Kraków, Poland; e-mail: [email protected] (received October 24, 2011; accepted April 2, 2012) The aim of this paper is to present methods of digitally synthesising the sound generated by vibroa- coustic systems with distributed parameters. A general algorithm was developed to synthesise the sounds of selected musical instruments with an axisymmetrical shape and impact excitation, i.e., Tibetan bowls and bells. A coupled mechanical-acoustic field described by partial differential equations was discretized by using the Finite Element Method (FEM) implemented in the ANSYS package. The presented synthe- sis method is original due to the fact that the determination of the system response in the time domain to the pulse (impact) excitation is based on the numerical calculation of the convolution of the forcing function and impulse response of the system. This was calculated as an inverse Fourier transform of the system’s spectral transfer function. The synthesiser allows for obtaining a sound signal with the assumed, expected parameters by tuning the resonance frequencies which exist in the spectrum of the generated sound. This is accomplished, basing on the Design of Experiment (DOE) theory, by creating a meta-model which contains information on its response surfaces regarding the influence of the design parameters.

This delay has been caused mainly by the discovery, during the preparation of the work, that many of the documents which go to make up a Sessions Roll had become misplaced. It was thus necessary to examine and arrange all the rolls for a period long after the date when this calendar was likely to end, in order to ensure that all records covering the period would be brought together and noted in the calendar.

In the numerical simulations a number of modifications of the geometry mimicking or- naments and reliefs is investigated as such ornaments have lead to mistunes in a very popular case in Germany. It is also shown, how the influence of ornaments on the modification of eigenfrequencies can be reduced. The numerical results obtained by eigenvalue analyses as well as transient analyses with LS-DYNA compare very well with the experimental results. It is shown that LS-DYNA- Finite Element analysis can be well used for bell de- sign [14]. Introduction The casting of bells was and is still an art and the craftsmen or artists are asking for some luck to achieve the final goal of a well sounding bell. Recently in Germany the casting flaws in the mak- ing of the bells for the rebuild Frauenkirche in Dresden have been in the focus of attention.
