Introduction Seeds of Awareness This book is inspired by an undergraduate course called “Music, Art, and Theology,” one of the most popular classes I teach and probably the course I’ve most enjoyed teaching. The reasons for this may be as straightforward as they are worthy of lament. In an era when study of the arts has become a practical afterthought, a “luxury” squeezed out of tight education budgets and shrinking liberal arts curricula, people intuitively yearn for spaces where they can explore together the landscape of the human heart opened up by music and, more generally, the arts. All kinds of people are attracted to the arts, but I have found that young adults especially, seeking something deeper and more worthy of their questions than what they find in highly quantitative and STEM-oriented curricula, are drawn into the horizon of the ineffable where the arts take us. Across some twenty-five years in the classroom, over and over again it has been my experience that young people of diverse religious, racial, and economic backgrounds, when given the opportunity, are eager to plumb the wellsprings of spirit where art commingles with the divine-human drama of faith. From my childhood to the present day, my own spirituality1 or way of being in the world has been profoundly shaped by music, not least its capacity to carry me beyond myself and into communion with the mysterious, transcendent dimension of reality. -

OB: Since we were talking about Limestone County, where I grew up, actually, this Saturday, June 25, will be the yearly memorial service at Old Bethel Cemetery. It's down in the southeast corner of the county. They are also going to have a reunion of the Kickapoo School, so-called, because my grandfather was a Kickapoo Choctaw Indian. That Kickapoo was a smaller tribe of the big tribe. And because of his helping to build that school, they always referred to it as Kickapoo. And there has not been any school in that o ld two-room schoolhouse since 1935. Even the building is gone. But three years ago somebody said: Let's try to have a reunion together with the memorial service at the cemetery because everybody who has loved ones in that cemetery also went to that school and nearly everybody bur ied in that cemetery went to that school, for that ma tter . So we called a reunion. We called it The Kickapoo Legion, because that means the survivors, you know. And , now there hadn't been any school there since 1935 and this was 1985, fifty years later. BRIGGS 2 OB: Thirty four students and one teacher showed up at that memorial service. So we continue to have it each year. -

CAPTURING TURMOIL: NEW HOLLYWOOD AS POLITICAL DISCOURSE by DANA ALSTON A THESIS Presented to the Department of Cinema Studies and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2018 An Abstract of the Thesis of Dana Alston for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of Cinema Studies to be taken June 2018 Title: Capturing Turmoil: New Hollywood as Political Discourse Approved: _______________________________________ Dr. Erin Hanna This thesis is an argumentative close analysis of themes, aesthetics, and political meanings within three New Hollywood films. It emerged out of an interest in the films of the 1960s and 70s and the changes within that era’s film industry. Those changes granted young, educated filmmaker opportunities to helm studio-driven projects, weaving material into their narratives that would have been impossible in a system ruled by the Hollywood Production Code. The era also included significant social and political unrest, and the films therein reflect that reality. In this project, I perform content analyses for three films within the New Hollywood movement — Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), and Nashville (1975) — in order to understand how films in the movement used themes of celebrity, violence, and oppression to act as a form of discourse. All three films employ on-screen violence to complicate the audience’s initial assumptions of characters, and each film critiques the social and political issues of its time through this violence. For each analysis, I discuss several sequences’ mise-en-scène — the arrangement of elements within the entire frame — and connect them to broad socio-political ideas. -
