[email protected] This guide is an attempt to outline each track variation in the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ recorded catalogue. Put simply, this is every different “version” of each of their songs. Some are wildly different, containing extra verses or alternate guitar solos; some contain fairly negligible differences that aren’t audible to the human ear. If you’re after the most complete version of the band’s discography, what’s listed below will help you a great deal.

The format is as follows: [x] - Name of release - format - year - “variation”

Sources will be listed in the rough order of their release. Unreleased in-studio mixes will be listed before all else. Demos aren’t given the same name as their respective albums (i.e. Demos For Third Album, not Uplift Mofo Party Plan demos) because the album name’s didn’t exist at the time of their recording. For example, in 1986 the band weren’t recording demos for “The Uplift Mofo Party Plan”, they were recorded demos for their third album.

For simplicity’s sake, only the most readily available release will be displayed here unless there is something unique about the source. For example, Fortune Faded appeared as a single before its release on Greatest Hits, but the same version can be found on both releases, and only the latter can be easily heard today. If the single had a unique mix, that would be listed as well.

Digital versions will not be acknowledged if they are merely CD masters. For the purposes of this guide, a CD and a CD-R are the same thing.

Not every diﬀerent pressing of a vinyl record is a new mastering. Only new masterings are listed.

This guide will be continually updated as more information and further clarity arrives. There are most likely mistakes in this guide. Please get in touch if you notice any.

The ﬁrst seven “regular” songs were released on Out In LA in 1994 and their respective remastered albums in 2003, with some edits done to the recordings (e.g. note the slight diﬀerences in speed, and the fade in of the backing track on Green Heaven).

2[b] is an extended mix, remixed by Steve Bando (possibly a pseudonym) and engineered by Rob Stevens. 4[b] is an extended club mix by Rob Stevens. They were both released on a promotional 12” ahead of the album. Curiously, True Men Don’t Kill Coyotes was given a video but no single release, and Get Up And Jump vice versa.

The Freaky Styley Session Tape tracks are sourced from an unmixed cassette that was made part way through the sessions. These tracks (not the complete album) lack vocals and horn overdubs, and are often longer than their album counterparts, such as Hollywood (Africa), The Brothers Cup and Yertle the Turtle, highlighting some editing work that was done during mixing.

The tracks listed as James Slovak Tape tracks circulate as a zip ﬁle, containing 16[b], 18[a] and 19[a] (as well as three Uplift Mofo demos and a What Is This? demo). 16[b] is of a better quality than 16[a], so it will be considered a separate source here. They are apparently circulating thanks to James Slovak, and date from the time when he was selling Behind The Sun, his tribute to Hillel, on his website. He has explicitly stated that he has no idea what Stale Bastard is, but that’s the name that’s been assigned to it by many fans online, so we’ll leave it that way. It appears to be a jam recorded during the album sessions. The Freaky Styley Session Tape may have also been provided by James, but that’s unconﬁrmed for now.

Jungle Man had a 12” release in 1985, backed with Nevermind, Stranded (unique to this set) and Hollywood (Africa), but aside from 2[b], they were all album versions. The “single edit” of Hollywood is a diﬀerent mix, not just an edit.

3[c] does not fade out; every other mix of the track does.

17[b] leaked to the internet in 2014 and is extended and unmastered, but no further information is available. It appears to be from a high quality source.

Set It Straight has not appeared in any form outside of the ﬁlm Tough Guys, and the only version available has movie dialogue over the band’s backing track. The highest quality version of the song appears on the Bluray, which was released in May 2017. Prior to that, it was released on VHS and DVD. 2[a] is the band playing the riﬀ that ended up becoming the verse to Me and My Friends; at the end of the song (only about a minute’s worth) you can hear Keith Levene ask the band “what’s that then?” Hillel replies “Who knows,” and Flea says “That’s it, that’s all it is.” So one can assume that at a point shortly thereafter, they combined it with 3[a], and it became the song we all know and love today.

Notes:

The Rough Instrumentals tracks are sourced from a cassette made part way through recording, and are unﬁnished rough mixes that contain pre-song noises and on some tracks, guide vocals (aside from Pea, which has its ﬁnal vocals and overdubs intact). The handwritten tracklist that accompanied the cassette lists early versions of Walkabout and Deep Kick, but these are missing from the rip, or from the cassette entirely. Of note: these recordings (or at least the dubbing of this cassette) took place at the same studio as the First Demo Session, back in 1983.

The Unmastered/Unsequenced cassette contains many un-edited mixes, most notably on Falling Into Grace. One Hot Minute contains an extra verse. All songs come to their natural ending, with the exception of One Big Mob, which fades out rather harshly - before the Stretch part of the song can begin. That’s a strange choice, as the album was intended to include One Big Mob and Stretch as a single song, or at least the two songs with a track marker cutting them apart; the change was made to remove the latter at the very last minute. Other pre-release tapes contained both songs present, so it’s not clear why it fades out here.

Melancholy Mechanics appeared on the CD soundtrack for the motion picture Twister, but the same source as 17[b] was used. As a digital download of the soundtrack is now the only legal source to obtain the track, we’ve listed it here.

The 2012 vinyl release was remastered from the original tapes by Chris Bellman, and the 2015 HD download is also a diﬀerent master to the existing release, but it’s not clear who mastered it, and it’s fairly indistinguishable from the existing retail version.

Warped 1[c] and 1[b] have slightly extended endings, where more of the background voices are audible; [b] is the album version, but [c] is a radio edit. 1[g] isn’t a radio edit, has the extended ending, but doesn’t seem to be from the same source as [b].

My Friends 4[e] is slightly longer than 4[c], with an extra guitar noise at the beginning. 4[d] has a slightly longer outro compared to its album counterpart.

One Big Mob/Stretch 15[b] has the One Big Mob ending attached to the beginning of it, as the two were originally recorded as one long song. 15[a] is a clean cut that starts exactly where Stretch begins.

Walkabout 8[c] is an edit (with a clean ending) exclusive to the Australian Shallow Be Thy Game single.

I Found Out 18[a] wasn’t technically ever considered for release on One Hot Minute, but it was recording during the sessions — technically — at a portable studio in Hollywood. Perhaps a further update will separate the two. It’s unclear what, exactly, 1[g], 4[h] and 17[d] are. They are very low quality, but don’t appear to be vinyl or cassette rips (they may be DAT rips). They may well be unmastered, or at least don’t seem to contain any real digital limiting. They also contain the same slight extensions at the beginning and ends of the tracks also heard in 1[b], 1[c] and 4[e], such as that extra hit of guitar at the beginning of My Friends, but they’re not from the same source as those tracks. If these slightly diﬀerent mixes weren’t available in higher quality elsewhere, they’d be a lot more interesting. Notes:

The Rough Mixes version of the album (often referred to as “Unmastered”) is sourced from an in- house CD-R made at the end of the mixing sessions, and sounds much better than the final retail CD. The Unmastered/Unsequenced version is similar, though it doesn’t sound nearly as good as the Rough Mixes. In fact even though it is supposedly “unmastered”, it sounds just like the retail CD, but contains a few unique mix differences. The exact placement in time that each of these CDs belongs to is hard to discern. They each have slightly different versions of tracks, but there is no logical progression from earliest to final. One must assume that there was many editing and mixing sessions between late 1998 and early 1999.

The Rock Band tracks being released resulted in multitrack stems being made available, much like they were for the Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Stadium Arcadium and I’m With You tracks.

Around The World 1[a] has ‘ning nang nong’ in each chorus instead of just the ﬁnal chorus, and an extended outro. 1[b] has louder synth in the chorus and an extended outro.

Californication 6[a], 6[b], 6[c], 6[e] and 6[g] all have slightly different combinations of first chorus counts and keyboard appearances. There appears to be no definitive version of the track.

Easily 7[a] and 7[d] have extended vocals in the outro.

This Velvet Glove 11[b] has two run-throughs of the ﬁrst chorus instead of one.

Savior 12[a] and 12[b] have an extra verse before the guitar solo and backing vocals in the outro that are missing in 12[c]. 12[d] has no extra verse, but extra backing vocals.

Right On Time 14[d] has extended backing vocals and no “on top” tape bleed at the beginning of the track as heard elsewhere.

Aside from the odd radio edit and instrumentals, the only real variation of note from these sessions is 6[e] which features the natural beginning of the song. Those few seconds can also be heard in 6[a], a trailer released for the album on Youtube, but that mix leaves oﬀ the rest of the song.

A full collection of instrumental versions of I’m With You leaked to Youtube in late 2018. Their source is unknown, but it’s most likely these were created in 2011 along with the ﬁnal album mixes.

For its initial 7” vinyl release, 25[a] was edited and split across two sides. On the digital release and 25[b] it appears in full, unedited.
