HERO BIKE FESTIVAL 2015 PROGRAM SATURDAY HERO XCO VAL GARDENA TIME 10 AM 20 LOCATION S. Cristina Val Gardena, Nordic Skiing Centre of Monte Pana JUNE Make way for the new stars! The XCO Val Gardena opens the HERO 2015 World Marathon Week: a cross-country race on a 4 km circuit and 160 hm elevation gain. Bikers will have to complete the circuit various times depending on their category. As can be expected from an Olympic discipline, athletes will face hard, steep climbs and technical, demanding downhill rides. All this set against the backdrop of stunning views. The Val Gardena XCO is part of the cross-country South Tyrol Championship. It attracts numerous pro and amateur bikers to the starting line. However, the limelight is directed on the local youth. HERO has devised a race which acts as a stepping stone towards higher goals. Both bikers and audience will have a time to remember thanks to the spectacular location of the Nordic Skiing Centre in Monte Pana, at the foot of the Sassolungo, Val Gardena’s symbol. Antonio square JUNE A ride down memory lane: the Amarcord bike The mountain bike as we know it was the last evolutionary step of the bike or the velocipede, as it was known at the start of the last century. Take a stroll back in time with us to celebrate the HERO Bike Festival: around 20 members of the period bike club “bici d’epoca”, dressed in jerseys of the time, will showcase their historic bikes, genuine heirlooms from the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. We’ll travel back to the origins of the bike, the birth of the mountain bike and its use and development in the Dolomites. Videos from that period, live mu- sic with Noluntas, interviews and stories of experts will bring us a somewhat vintage and ancient atmosphere. Unmissable. In the last ten years, the roads of the four Dolomite passes have been witness to a magnificent, yet ever so quiet, event. The Sellaronda Bike Day: on this day no traffic is allowed on the roads and 20,000 (yes, you’ve read that right!) bikers swarm onto the roads of Passo Sella, Passo Gardena, Passo Pordoi, and Passo Campolongo. This isn’t a race. This isn’t a competition. Therefor no registration is needed. It’s a long bike ride around the Sella Group, in the heart of the Dolomites. From 8.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. the roads of the four passes will be free of motorised traffic. STARTING POINT: Start from the valley villages around the Sella Group: Canazei, Arabba, Corvara, and Selva Val Gardena. The official starting point in Val Gardena is at the Maciaconi crossroads in Selva on the border to S. Cristina at 8.30 a.m. For safety reasons, please bike anticlockwise. We highly recommend you to use the helmet. HIGHLIGHT: In occasion of the tenth edition of the Sellaronda Bike Day, members of the period bike club “bici d’epoca” will visit S. Cristina Val Gardena at the starting point with their historic bikes. DAVID V HERLIHY THE VELOCIPEDE CRAZE IN MAINE In early 1869\ when the nation experienced its first bicycle craze, Maine was among the hardest-hit regions. Portland boasted one of the first and largest manufacto­ ries, and indoor rinks proliferated statewide in frenzied anticipation of the dawning “era of road travel. ” In this article, the author traces the movement in Maine within an international context and tackles the fundamental riddle: Why was the craze so intense, and yet so brief? He challenges the conventional explanation - that technical inadequacies doomed the machine - and cites economic obstacles: in particular, the unreasonable royalty demands imposed by Maine-born patent-holder Calvin Witty. Contact: [email protected] Bikes and the Brooklyn Waterfront: Past, Present, and Future Brooklyn and the Bicycle by David V. Herlihy Across the United States, cycling is flourishing, not only as a recreational activity but also as a “green” and practical means of urban transportation. The phenomenon is particularly pronounced in Brooklyn, a large and mostly flat urban expanse with a vibrant, youthful population. The current national cycling boom encompasses new and promising developments, such as a growing number of hi-tech urban bike share networks, including Citi Bike, set to launch in New York City in May 2013. Nevertheless, the present “revival” reflects a certain historical pattern in which the bicycle has swung periodically back into, and out of, public favor. I propose to review here the principal American cycling booms over the past century and a half to show how, each time, Brooklyn has played a prominent role.     Adventures in Western New York History MANUFACTURERS OF WHEELS AND MOTORS By Roger Squire The Bicycle The bicycle reached the height of its popularity in the late nineteenth century. It was both a cheap, quick means of travel over a short distance and a pleasant, healthful sport. Before it reached its maximum efficiency, however, it went through the usual evolution of a complex machine. The idea of riding on a seat directly over wheels occurred to several Europeans in the early 1800's. The man credited with the invention of the first practical two-wheeled vehicle was Karl von Drais, Baron of Saurbronn, who in 1816 appeared on the streets of Karlsruhe, Germany, on a contraption called the Draisine. A Frenchman, Chevalier de Sivrac, had invented a hobby-horse, the Celerifere, in 1790, but his model was of little use since it could not be steered. The Draisine consisted basically of two small carriage wheels and a length of wood called a backbone, connected with two v- shaped uprights rising from the front and rear hubs of the wheels. Other parts were the saddle and back rest, and a crude tiller for steering. The rims of the wheels were covered with bands of iron. The rider moved forward by pushing the ground alternately with his feet and coasting between strokes. It was strenuous, but could double a man's pace with half the effort of walking. This invention was followed in Europe by such variations as the Dandy-Horse, Swiftwalker, velocipede, and Bivector. In 1838 a Scottish blacksmith, Kirkpatrick MacMillan, pro- duced the first bicycle that could be driven with both feet off the ground.

Bicycles in Amesbury By Tom Murphy, Industrial Survey Volunteer Amesbury Carriage Museum The January 18, 1895, issue of the Amesbury Daily News reports that on display in the window of J. W. Creasey’s Pharmacy on Market Square is “a model safety bicycle made by Geo. Knight[s] the local machinist for Doctor Cooper.” The notice goes on to say, “It is one of the finest machines ever seen in this town.” The bicycle craze was spreading, and not surprisingly, Amesbury adapted to the new reality, and mirrored the national rise and fall of the bicycle as a form of transportation. The design of the “safety bicycle,” like the one that Knights built in 1895, was the culmination of developments that began in the mid 1860s with the introduction of the velocipede. Velocipede Arriving in the U. S. from France in 1865, the velocipede was a two-wheeled device with the pedals on the front wheel. In the early days of this technology, as is usual, there was great variety in the way the machines were made. Not surprisingly, there was much innovation among U.S. makers. The Price example (Figure 1) used a tubular frame and wire wheels with rubber inserts. The brakes were applied by leveraging against the handle bars to press down on the seat.1 In February of 1869, as was happening in many New England cities2, an entrepreneur set up a velocipede rink in the Tuttle’s Hall of the American House hotel in Amesbury.

Ph.D. Captain US Army Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Adaptive cycling define: Adaptive Cycling (AC) defined - is a cycling paradigm that reflects the uniqueness of a bicycle and the multitude of environments that it can operate in. Its premise is that there is no one methodology or technique of cycling that can or must be applied to every situation or environment, rather existing methodologies are just tools that are part of a larger toolbox that the cyclist can use to adapt to his/her unique cycling needs and environment. Adaptive cycling seeks to use a combination of existing techniques and methodologies to provide solutions for specific situations that a cyclist faces in the environment they choose to ride in, as well as to create new, innovative solutions that not only apply to today's cycling world, but hopefully into the future. Fitting a bike, is the same as fitting your bike. Context: Related concept IEP, individual educational plan, is adaptation of standard education delivery systems to children/learners with special needs. Example: Kid with super skills in math: IEP: moving forward in curriculum to next level of math until toped out, then allowing learner to take advanced math in local college. #2: Kid with limited sight: IEP: move child to front of classroom, use assistive technologies to zoom text, large type text books, etc.

Reid Introduction This is a sequel to my piece on the Physics of Cycling, though perhaps it should be a prequel since in concerns the evolution of the bicycle itself in the 19th century. As I write this it’s near mid-winter, too cold or too wet or too windy for my fair-weather cycling habits. However with the poor weather has come the opportunity to browse the Scientific American pages over some 30 years leading up to the end of the 19th century. One of the subjects that has caught my attention is how the bicycle developed from its primitive mid-century form to something recognizably modern. The Scientific American was then quite parochial, concentrating on American inventions but reporting on events in Europe too. It was in fact a magazine more for technophiles than a prime source of science but 19th century America was a hot-bed of technical invention and the Scientific American survived by being up-with-the- times. The bicycle became very popular in Britain, France and other European countries as the century progressed but it did so in America too and by the end of the century American bikes were as good as any in the world. They would have said ‘better’. Sticking with the American based perspective gives a good flavour of the changes that were happening in other countries too. One of the fascinating aspects of my browsing was to see the variations on the bicycle theme that have failed the test of time or given rise to other devices we now don’t particularly associate with bicycles.

Given the combination of mass production and a mass-consumption society, distribution patterns can be seen as dendritic, spreading from manufacturer to buyer, involving ever finer levels of dispersal and reduction in numbers, alongside ever more diverse modes of distribution. There are, of course, other commodity flows between sources and raw materials and production, and of labour within these processes. This chapter considers the role of human powered vehicles: bicycles and tricycles, in this mundane distribution of consumer goods. Bulk- produced, quotidian items, from foodstuffs to newspapers to clothing are consumed at an individual and household level and cargo bikes of a variety of designs have long been envisaged as part of this chain of commodity distribution from retailer to consumer.
