Het Fenomeen “Poeske” Scherens
KATHOLIEKE UNIVERSITEIT LEUVEN FACULTEIT LETTEREN MASTER IN DE GESCHIEDENIS Het fenomeen “Poeske” Scherens Promotor Masterproef Prof. dr. D. VANYSACKER ingediend door HERPELINCK FRAN Leuven 2010-2011 Voorwoord Alsof hij soms even tot leven kwam, in een literaire wielerflits. Alsof hij soms even aan de einder voorbijvloog, in een welgemikte ‘kattensprong’. Jef “Poeske” Scherens is al even niet meer onder ons, maar zijn sportieve adem, evenals de ziel van zijn tijdsperiode, zijn vervat in honderden documenten, in archieven overal te lande, in privé-collecties, in oude kranten en tijdschriften. Het afgelopen jaar was er een van puzzelwerk. Puzzelstukjes vinden, was geen probleem. Punt was te kijken welk stukje het meest authentiek was. Vele stukjes blonken immers buitensporig fel. Jef “Poeske” Scherens was een overstijgende persoonlijkheid, die zowel op als naast de fiets wist te fascineren. Als sprintende baanwielrenner kende hij in de periode tussen de Twee Wereldoorlogen, het interbellum van de twintigste eeuw, veruit zijn gelijke niet. Scherens was als ‘fenomeen’ een ‘idool’, die supporters deed juichen, journalisten in de pen deed kruipen en lyrische reacties aan hen ontlokte. In een fervente poging op zoek te gaan naar een kern van waarheid en tijdsgevoel, was het vaak noodzakelijk mezelf te berispen, wanneer enthousiasme primeerde op kritische zin. Het leven van Jef Scherens rolt zich dan ook uit als een lofdicht, dat doorheen de jaren haast niet aan charme heeft ingeboet. Na een intensieve kennismaking met “Poeske”, wielerheld en volksfiguur, was ik anderzijds terdege verwonderd . De laatste decennia kenden wielerbelangstelling en ‘koersliteratuur’ een enorme hausse . Kronieken, biografieën en poëtische werken worden gekleurd door noeste renners en wervelende persoonlijkheden - al kan er sprake zijn van een chronologische en pragmatische richtlijn. -

Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Jane Danielewicz Jordynn Jack Daniel Anderson Jane Thrailkill Beverly Taylor ABSTRACT Sarah Overbaugh Hallenbeck Writing the Bicycle: Women, Rhetoric, and Technology in Late Nineteenth-Century America (Under the direction of Jane Danielewicz and Jordynn Jack) This project examines the intersections among rhetoric, gender, and technology, examining in particular the ways that American women appropriated the new technology of the bicycle at the turn of the twentieth century. It asks: how are technologies shaped by discourse that emanates both from within and beyond professional boundaries? In what ways do technologies, in turn, reshape the social networks in which they emerge—making available new arguments and rendering others less persuasive? And to what extent are these arguments furthered by the changed conditions of embodiment and materiality that new technologies often initiate? Writing the Bicycle: Women, Rhetoric and Technology in Late Nineteenth- Century America addresses these questions by considering how women’s interactions with the bicycle allowed them to make new claims about their minds and bodies, and transformed the gender order in the process. The introduction, “Rhetoric, Gender, Technology,” provides an overview of the three broad conversations to which the project primarily contributes: science and technology studies, feminist historiography, and rhetorical theory. In addition, it outlines a “techno-feminist” materialist methodology that emphasizes the material ii and rhetorical agency of users in shaping technologies beyond their initial design and distribution phases. -

Pourquoi une découverte aussi importante a-t-elle autant tardé ? Certains affirment – pas seulement chez Michelin – que sans le pneu, il n’y aurait pas eu de bicyclette ni d’automobile. Ou alors, si peu. Et roulant si mal. C’est une histoire déconcertante. En effet, quoi de plus élémentaire qu’un pneu ? Mais le génie de Michelin est d’en avoir fait, dans sa poursuite de l’excellence, un produit de haute technologie, aussi complexe dans sa conception, dans ses constituants et dans sa réalisation que simple dans son utilisation. À l’inverse d’autres industries, qui banalisent les appareils les plus compliqués, Michelin s’est ingéniée à rendre le pneu toujours plus performant, plus sophistiqué. « Si le pneu ne vous passionne pas, vous n’avez rien à faire dans cette Maison » assure Marius Mignol, génial inventeur du Radial au jeune François Michelin lorsqu’il entre à la Manufacture en 1955. La passion, c’est celle de la recherche, de l’innovation. C’est celle que partagent les dirigeants, les ingénieurs, tout le personnel. Le fruit en est le pneu X dont les nombreuses déclinaisons hissent en un demi-siècle l’entreprise auvergnate au rang des leaders mondiaux. Un demi- siècle supplémentaire de course pour l’immortel Bibendum qui double ainsi sa durée de vie tout en rajeunissant sa silhouette, défiant et séduisant tous les publicitaires de la planète. -

L’épopée fantastique 1820-1920, cycles et motos 8 avril - 25 juillet 2016 Musée national de la Voiture du Palais de Compiègne www.musees-palaisdecompiegne.fr Suriray, Vélocipède de course, 1869. ©RMNGP/Tony Querrec La collection de cycles du musée national de la Voiture compte, pour les années 1818-1920, parmi les plus remarquables d’Europe. Une importante acquisition réalisée en 2015 a permis de notablement l’enrichir et se trouve présentée au public à cette occasion. L’exposition L’Epopée fantastique est organisée autour de différentes thématiques comme les innovations techniques, la recherche de vitesse, les loisirs, les courses, les clubs et la pratique cycliste, ainsi que les impacts sociaux liés au développement des deux-roues entre 1820 et 1920. Des emprunts à d’autres musées français comme le musée Auto Moto de Chatellerault et le musée d’Art et d’Industrie de Saint Etienne, ainsi qu’à des collections privées viennent compléter cette première sélection. C’est à l’occasion du 125e anniversaire de la course Paris-Roubaix, dont le départ a lieu à Compiègne depuis presque quarante ans, que l’exposition sera ouverte au public. On pourra y découvrir les origines du cycle et de la moto et l’extraordinaire émulation qui animait les fabricants, les coureurs, les cyclistes et motards de ces années d’expérimentations et d’exploration qui sont synonymes de nouvelles sensations. L’exposition s’articule autour de quatre axes principaux : 1. Les années 1820-1860 : de la draisienne au vélocipède. Né de la draisienne, inventée par le baron allemand Karl Drais, le vélocipède est issu de la mise en place d’un pédalier sur la roue avant, innovation attribuée au français Pierre Michaux en 1861. -

Ohio Youth Bicycle Helmet Ordinance Toolkit Assisting local communities in educating decision makers on the importance of a youth bicycle helmet law. March 2013 www.healthyohioprogram.org/vipp/oipp/oipp Through a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Core Injury grant, the Ohio Department of Health’s Violence and Injury Prevention Program established the Ohio Injury Prevention Partnership (OIPP) in November of 2007. The purpose of the OIPP is to bring together a group of multi-disciplinary professionals from across the state to identify priority injury issues and develop strategies to address them. Child injury is one of the OIPP’s priorities and the members recommended the formation of the Child Injury Action Group (CIAG). The CIAG has identified five focus areas to address in their five-year strategic plan, including: teen driving safety, bicycle and wheeled sports helmets, infant sleep-related suffocation, sports- related traumatic brain injury, and child restraint/ booster seat law review/revision. Simplex Racing Gears Gears, Riders and Machines 25 March 2015 Lucien Juy – Founder of Simplex • Owned bicycle shop in Dijon • Made his first derailleur in 1928 – named it (and his company) Simplex as a bit of a dig at the competition whose products were thought overly complicated. • Prolific innovator – many Simplex patents over the course of his lifetime and now widely adopted by most manufacturers. • Attached his name to many of his products, e.g. Juy51, LJ23, Super LJ, JuyRecord Key Dates • 1928 – First Simplex derailleur • 1933 – Production 40,000 units. 4 French National Championship wins • 1936 – Antonin Magne wins World Championship, giving name to Champion du Monde derailleur • 1947 – Jean Robic wins first post-war Tour de France, giving name to Tour de France gear • 1962 – Plastic! • 1990s – Gear production ceases Champion du Monde Gear • Single roller gear with chain tension provided by sprung arm. • Sprung ‘plunger’ operation – spring pushes chain towards larger cogs (lower gears) and lever operated cable pulls chain towards smaller cogs (higher gears) • Produced from 1930s to 1940s • Disadvantaged by poor ‘chain wrap’ over cogs – greater chance of chain slipping or ‘jumping’ over cogs. Limited “range”. Helyett with Champion du Monde Gear • Very similar to the bikes used by the Helyett team in the late 1930s. Notable riders include René Vietto who rode for Helyett until 1944 and had his portrait on the seat tube on some Helyett Spéciale models Rene Vietto – French Folk Hero • Good racing cyclist – leader of Helyett team in 1930s and late 1940s • Famous for sitting by the roadside – doing well in the 1934 Tour de France but compelled to hand his wheel over to French team leader Antonin Magne who subsequently won the race. -
