Łukasz Ciepliński and members of the 4th Main Board of the "Freedom and Independence" Association (WiN) On 1 March, the IPN’s President Jarosław Szarek, Ph.D., unveiled a plaque commemorating Col. Łukasz Ciepliński and members of the 4th Main Board of WiN. The ceremony took place on the 70th anniversary of the execution of Col. Łukasz Ciepliński and his subordinates: Maj. Józef Batory, Maj. Franciszek Błażej, Cpt. Karol Chmiel, Col. Mieczysław Kawalec, Lt. Col. Adam Lazarowicz and Maj. Józef Rzepka. The plaque was installed at the main entrance of the Museum of Cursed Soldiers and Political Prisoners of the People's Republic of Poland, former political prison in Rakowiecka Street in Warsaw. The unveiling has a symbolic dimension, since 70 years ago, on the prison premises functionaries of the communist regime murdered those seven officers of the Polish Army, steadfast defenders of independent Poland. The commemoration is part of the celebration of the 11th National Accursed Soldiers Remembrance Day. The road back to our memory is long and rocky for the Accursed Soldiers. I rememeber that years ago I spoke to Professor Barbara Otwinowska, who told me all about the problems of restoring the history of our pre-1956 struggle for free and independent Poland; apparently, some people preferred to think that this resistance was born in 1956, and everything before was to be forgotten. said the IPN’s President Jarosław Szarek at the ceremony. The plaque commemorating Col. Ciepliński and his officers, made of the charcoal-gray granite, is decorated with the cast Cross of the "Freedom and Independence” Association. The plaque was made and installed by the IPN's Office for Commemorating the Struggle and Martyrdom. It is the 10th commemorative plaque in the Mokotów prison, dedicated to the victims of communist crimes, and funded by the Institute of National Remembrance. XXI, 23 (4/2016), pp. 125-143 October - December Józef FORYSTEK1 THE UNDERGROUND SYSTEM OF JUSTICE IN THE HOME ARMY'S RZESZÓW SUB-REGION The Home Army's Rzeszów Sub-Region comprising the area confined within three rivers: San, Vistula and Wisłoka, and the Slovakian border in the south was spun off from the Home Army’s Kraków Region in April 1943. The four Eastern Inspectorates were incorporated into the newly created Sub-Region, namely: Rzeszów, Przemyśl, Jasło and Mielec, and in each of them were created on the basis of pre-war communes. On the basis of the statutes approved by the Commander-in-Chief, the Military Special Courts (WSS) were started to be established in 1941 within the military division, and the Civil Special Courts (CSS) within the civil division were created a year later. The first sentences concerning the Rzeszów area were passed in that court as early as in 1941. Actions involving the execution of death penalties continue to raise a host of emotions and controversies. special squads (the so-called hit squads) were appointed as execution bodies of WSS by relevant commands of ZWZ/AK to be used to carry out execution sentences. As regards execution sentences, CSS hit squads were established by the Government Delegation for Poland (Delegatura Rządu na Kraj). It is worth noting that in the period from January 1941 to June 1944, the Home Army soldiers carried out executions of the total of 5,733 officers of the German Police, Military Police, and the SS.

There were a great number of those who could not come to terms with this fact, choosing further unequal struggle and remaining in the underground. The soldiers of the anti-communist independence underground came from various environments: the Home Army, National Armed Forces or Peasants’ Battalions. They had different visions of a future Poland, but they shared a common fate. They knew that if they were arrested, they would face death or years of imprisonment, that perhaps they would never see their loved ones again ... Those who were sentenced to death in the show "trials" were to be deprived also of the right to their own grave and human remembrance. The murdered were secretly buried in nameless graves, and the families searched for any news about their fate with no avail. The memory of the Cursed Soldiers was restored only after several dozen years, thanks to the efforts taken by many people: families, former comrades-in-arms, journalists, scientists and social activists. Given the growing interest in the history of the independence underground, there is a need to commemorate thousands of those who paid a high – and sometimes ultimate – price for their stance. On 9 February 2011, President of Poland Bronisław Komorowski signed the act establishing a new public holiday: Cursed Soldiers National Remembrance Day, celebrated on 1 March.

Tomasz Frydel: Ordinary Men? Tomasz Frydel Ordinary Men? Te Polish Police and the Holocaust in the Subcarpathian Region “Policemen Ratajczak, Gaweł, and Kuczek discovered that a local peasant was hiding a certain Jew – once very wealthy, still a young man, a very rare type, as he was exceptionally brave. Tey arrested both of them, that is, the Jew and the 60-year-old peasant, who gave him shelter. Both were beaten in an inhuman way – a bucket of water was poured on the peasant’s head, who kept fainting during the beating, and then was forced to wipe everything with his own coat. On Ratajczak’s orders, they were sentenced to death. Te peasant was not strong enough to walk on his own to the execution site, so a horse-drawn cart was used; the Jew walked on foot and shouted through the city: ‘Poland has not perished yet!’”1 I. The Many Shades of Blue In the fall of 2012, a monument dedicated to the memory of Polish policemen executed during the German occupation was quietly unveiled on the grounds of former Płaszów concentration camp.
