Both outsiders coming to New Orleans such as Ornette Coleman and Cannonball Adderley and locally born musicians such as Alvin Battiste, Ellis Marsalis, and James Black have contributed to this music. These musicians have influenced later players like Steve Masakowski, Shannon Powell, and Johnny Vidacovich up to more current musicians like Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, and Christian Scott. There are multiple reasons why New Orleans modern jazz has not had a greater profile. Some of these reasons relate to the economic considerations of modern jazz. OKeh Album Discography OKeh Album Discography By David Edwards and Mike Callahan Last update: June 9, 2003 The OKeh Record label was founded in Germany in 1910, by Carl Linstrom, a German who owned record labels in several countries. In 1918 the OKeh label was established in the United States under Otto Heineman, who was backed by Linstrom. During World War I, the OKeh Label was reorganized as a US company called General Phonograph Corporation, based in New York City. OKeh recorded all types of music, but in 1920 it started the black music recording industry by recording and releasing Mamie Smith's "Crazy Blues." In the following decade it distinguished itself by recording blues and jazz, including Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven Combos. In 1926, the General Phonograph Corporation was sold to the Columbia Phonograph Company. Eight years later, the Columbia Phonograph Company itself was purchased by the American Record Corporation (ARC). The new company kept the Columbia and Vocalion label names but dropped the OKeh label. In 1938, the Columbia Broadcasting System purchased ARC, and two years later, CBS revived the OKeh name by changing the name of the Vocalion label to OKeh. OKeh, as a division of record giant Columbia, was independently distributed and used for rhythm and blues releases. Columbia knew that their mainstream distribution network could not handle rhythm and blues effectively, so they farmed out the distribution of the OKeh label to distributors more in tune with the record shops, clubs, disc jockeys and radio stations involved with rhythm and blues.

  • The Specialty Story a Tale of Two Series of the Same Name, One in the U.S.A
The Specialty Story A tale of two series of the same name, one in the U.S.A. and one that went its own sweet way, in the U.K... The label had issued a dozen or so albums between 1957 and 1960, mostly featuring their rock’n’roll stars, but by the end of the 1960s the potential for meeting the new, growing audience for a wider range of blues, R&B and gospel would have been increasingly apparent. What it needed was somebody who had a very solid understanding and knowledge of the music, and a good handle on the potential new audience. The man to fill those shoes would be Barret Hansen (born Minneapolis, MN, 1941), who joined the staff of Specialty Records in 1968. Interviewed by Paul Vernon in the early 1980s, he described how he had come to work for the company: “I wrote a thesis called ‘The Evolution of Black Music From Blues to R&B Between 1945 And 1953’ for my masters degree at UCLA. Art Rupe was a board member of UCLA and played an active part in the affairs of the University, and while looking through a list of papers he saw mine and arranged through the folklore department a meeting with me over lunch. That led to an invitation to write liner notes for the John Lee Hooker album which was originally being compiled by somebody else. However, two weeks later he called me up and said the other guy had been let go and offered me a full time job, so I took it and stayed for three years.’(2) ‘This Is How It All Began’ (Specialty SPS-2117) was one of his first projects for the label, and the contents proved that the claim quoted at the top of this article was no idle boast.
