INTRODUCTION The Las Vegas bearpoppy, Arctomecon californica Torr. and Frem., is a rare herbaceous perennial endemic to the Mojave Desert that mainly inhabits gypsum outcrops. The Las Vegas bearpoppy is listed as Critically Endangered by the State of Nevada (Mistretta et al., 1995). A vital aspect of the life history of the bearpoppy that has been overlooked in previous studies is the fate of seeds. The unknown fate of the bearpoppy seeds provides an information gap in conservation management plans that is critical to plan mitigation measures (Powell and Walker 2003). Therefore, the objective of this research project is to determine the seed fates of the Las Vegas bearpoppy to further promote conservation efforts. The scope of this project follows seed fates through seed production, seed dispersal, and granivory to incorporation within the soil seed bank. In addition, seed viability testing will occur throughout the project to substantiate seed fate data. The research data will be collected from four study areas with an additional area added for soil seed bank studies traversing the natural range of the Las Vegas bearpoppy over a two-year consecutive period. The following hypotheses will be addressed in this research study: (1) Seed production corresponds to capsule size and number of rosettes. (2) Primary seed dispersal declines leptokurtically from the source. -

This week Mother Nature turned on the furnace and with the hot temperatures, our spring love fest with the beloved California poppy will soon come to an end. Throughout the state, poppies are setting both seed and promise for a glorious Spring 2021. Antelope Valley and the surrounding area has a great display of luminous orange California poppies (Eschscholzia californica), electric yellow monolopia (Monolopia lanceolata) and patches of goldfields (Lasthenia sp.). Spotted among the overwhelming yellow-orange color, are lupine (Lupinus spp.), tansy leafed phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia) and popcorn flower (Cryptantha spp.). You do not need to leave your home to see the poppies at the Antelope Valley State Poppy Reserve. Just view the live stream online at the preserve via the PoppyCam. EvoDevo (2016) 7:16 DOI 10.1186/s13227-016-0054-6 EvoDevo RESEARCH Open Access The developmental and genetic bases of apetaly in Bocconia frutescens (Chelidonieae: Papaveraceae) Cristina Arango‑Ocampo1, Favio González2, Juan Fernando Alzate3 and Natalia Pabón‑Mora1* Abstract Background: Bocconia and Macleaya are the only genera of the poppy family (Papaveraceae) lacking petals; how‑ ever, the developmental and genetic processes underlying such evolutionary shift have not yet been studied. Results: We studied floral development in two species of petal-less poppies Bocconia frutescens and Macleaya cordata as well as in the closely related petal-bearing Stylophorum diphyllum. We generated a floral transcriptome of B. frutescens to identify MADS-box ABCE floral organ identity genes expressed during early floral development. We performed phylogenetic analyses of these genes across Ranunculales as well as RT-PCR and qRT-PCR to assess loci- specific expression patterns. We found that petal-to-stamen homeosis in petal-less poppies occurs through distinct developmental pathways. Transcriptomic analyses of B. frutescens floral buds showed that homologs of all MADS-box genes are expressed except for the APETALA3-3 ortholog. Species-specific duplications of other ABCE genes inB. frute- scens have resulted in functional copies with expanded expression patterns than those predicted by the model. Conclusions: Petal loss in B. frutescens is likely associated with the lack of expression of AP3-3 and an expanded expression of AGAMOUS. The genetic basis of petal identity is conserved in Ranunculaceae and Papaveraceae although they have different number of AP3 paralogs and exhibit dissimilar floral groundplans. -

The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. In 1994, a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Parks and Recreation added Del Norte Coast, Prairie Creek, Athyriaceae – Lady Fern Family and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks to form a single administrative Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosporum • northwestern lady fern unit. Together they comprise about 133,000 acres (540 km2), including 37 miles of coast line. Almost half of the remaining old growth redwood forests Blechnaceae – Deer Fern Family are protected in these four parks. -

SUMMER 2012 Darlingtonia July-September Newsletter of the North Coast Chapter of the California Native Plant Society Dedicated to the Preservation of California Native Flora NATIVE PLANTS COME TO OLD TOWN: Inside this issue: The Lost Foods Native Plant Garden Feature Article: 1 by Monty Caid Native Plants Come to Old Town Field Trips and Plant Walks 2 Lost Foods Native Plant Garden, which I started in 2009, is located Chapter Programs 3 at 2nd and H Streets in Eureka, surrounding a city parking lot. The space was adopted from the City of Eureka, thanks to the Public Battling English Ivy—How Do 3 Works Dept. Adopt-a-Park Program. There are over one hundred Volunteer Corner 4 native plant species living together for the public to visit and become acquainted with. Some species are rarely seen anymore, others are Field Trip Reports: 5 Bluff Creek and E-Ne-Nuk more common, and all are native to Humboldt County. Walker Ridge and Cache Creek Lost Foods started as a business idea to reintroduce the public to our Mad River: Blue Lake and native food plants. "Lost foods" are the native plants that once West End Road covered our landscapes and were eaten and cared for by the original people of California. California became known as The Floristic Chapter Contacts 7 Province, and a world hot spot for biodiversity. Now mostly foreign Native Plant Gardening—Part 3 8 foods and domesticated crops cover the original landscape where in a Series: Lessons of a Laissez native foods once grew naturally. I felt that before the public is Faire Gardener reintroduced to native foods, we must start to restore our native Members’ Corner 10 food plant populations so these healthy, super foods will someday be Recycling Botanical Books 11 available again.
