  • Detecting Display Energy Hotspots in Android Apps
Detecting Display Energy Hotspots in Android Apps Mian Wan, Yuchen Jin, Ding Li and William G. J. Halfond University of Southern California Los Angeles, California, USA Email: fmianwan, yuchenji, dingli, [email protected] Abstract—Energy consumption of mobile apps has become an is based on the display’s brightness. This brightness, in turn, important consideration as the underlying devices are constrained is controlled by either the end user or by the OS performing by battery capacity. Display represents a significant portion of an opportunistic dimming of the display. However, most modern app’s energy consumption. However, developers lack techniques smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy SII, are powered to identify the user interfaces in their apps for which energy by a new generation of screen technology, the OLED. For needs to be improved. In this paper, we present a technique this type of screen, brightness is still important [10]; however, for detecting display energy hotspots – user interfaces of a mobile app whose energy consumption is greater than optimal. the colors that are displayed also become important. Due to Our technique leverages display power modeling and automated the underlying technology, this type of screen consumes less display transformation techniques to detect these hotspots and energy when displaying darker colors (e.g., black) than lighter prioritize them for developers. In an evaluation on a set of popular ones (e.g., white). The use of these screens means there are Android apps, our technique was very accurate in both predicting enormous energy savings to be realized at the software level energy consumption and ranking the display energy hotspots.

  • Photoplethysmography Signal Analysis for Optimal Region-Of-Interest Determination in Video Imaging on a Built-In Smartphone Under Different Conditions
sensors Article Photoplethysmography Signal Analysis for Optimal Region-of-Interest Determination in Video Imaging on a Built-In Smartphone under Different Conditions Yunyoung Nam 1 ID and Yun-Cheol Nam 2,* 1 Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Soonchunhyang University, Asan 31538, Korea; [email protected] 2 Department of Architecture, Joongbu University, Goyang 10279, Korea * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +82-31-8075-1622 Received: 23 August 2017; Accepted: 18 October 2017; Published: 19 October 2017 Abstract: Smartphones and tablets are widely used in medical fields, which can improve healthcare and reduce healthcare costs. Many medical applications for smartphones and tablets have already been developed and widely used by both health professionals and patients. Specifically, video recordings of fingertips made using a smartphone camera contain a pulsatile component caused by the cardiac pulse equivalent to that present in a photoplethysmographic signal. By performing peak detection on the pulsatile signal, it is possible to estimate a continuous heart rate and a respiratory rate. To estimate the heart rate and respiratory rate accurately, which pixel regions of the color bands give the most optimal signal quality should be investigated. In this paper, we investigate signal quality to determine the best signal quality by the largest amplitude values for three different smartphones under different conditions. We conducted several experiments to obtain reliable PPG signals and compared the PPG signal strength in the three color bands when the flashlight was both on and off. We also evaluated the intensity changes of PPG signals obtained from the smartphones with motion artifacts and fingertip pressure force.

  • History and Evolution of the Android OS
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Springer - Publisher Connector CHAPTER 1 History and Evolution of the Android OS I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this. —Steve Jobs, Apple Inc. Android, Inc. started with a clear mission by its creators. According to Andy Rubin, one of Android’s founders, Android Inc. was to develop “smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner’s location and preferences.” Rubin further stated, “If people are smart, that information starts getting aggregated into consumer products.” The year was 2003 and the location was Palo Alto, California. This was the year Android was born. While Android, Inc. started operations secretly, today the entire world knows about Android. It is no secret that Android is an operating system (OS) for modern day smartphones, tablets, and soon-to-be laptops, but what exactly does that mean? What did Android used to look like? How has it gotten where it is today? All of these questions and more will be answered in this brief chapter. Origins Android first appeared on the technology radar in 2005 when Google, the multibillion- dollar technology company, purchased Android, Inc. At the time, not much was known about Android and what Google intended on doing with it. Information was sparse until 2007, when Google announced the world’s first truly open platform for mobile devices. The First Distribution of Android On November 5, 2007, a press release from the Open Handset Alliance set the stage for the future of the Android platform.
