Interim Bulletin November 1982

Thanksgiving is one of the most beautiful holidays in the American dalendar. It is the perfect American holiday because the citizens of all races and creeds can.wholeheartedly 41 participate in it. It suits the promise of rija Regretfully many of our fellow citizens this year have little reason for Thanksgiving. They are the unemployed, the partially employed, the needy aged and the hungry children of this land. It is a paradox that people in this country shild go hungry when granaries are filled to overflowing. The bread basket has once again yielded a record breaking harvest. How is it possible then for people among us to go hungry? But it happens andthat is a fact. Each one of us must shape the answer to that queston. In the meantime, you and,I have a sacred obligation, a religious duty, to help feed the hungry. Let us help our neighbors who are hungry by sharing some of the fruits of our good land with them. As you bring your children to religious schoolon Sunday, November 21, please bring along canned and boxed food which we shall collect and give to SHARE.

-4- O Temple Bodef Shalom Social Action Committee is committed to helping wherever we see the need in our Jewish corrunity and our community at large. The SHARE organization was formed in McLean - Falls Church area to help the less fortunate in our community. Our Temple has a community service fund to provide an option for giving help to local charities. Project SHARE right now is having its annual Thanksgiving Food Collection from November 9-19. SHARE also calls for clothing, furniture, transportation and other assistance. For more information, call Mike Fisher at 893-4297. Our Religious School children and all adults are urged to contribute food (canned or boxed) to the box outside the Temple office. In 1981, the drive was an outstanding success and we know this year will be no different.

Other programs that our Community Services Fund assists are Falls Church- McLean Day Care Center, Northern Virginia Jewish Senior Council, Shelter House, Raoul Wallenberg House, Sarah House and the Hunger Task Force. For information on any of these programs, call Nan P.udin at 379-2466 or Clarine Schniukler at 356-3071.

The Religious Action Work of the Social Action Coninittee also involves a monthly committment to attend the Vigil for Soviet Jewry, the 4th Wednesday of every month at 12:30 on 16th Street across from the Soviet Embassy. This vigil is in operation every day of the year as a reminder of the great problems of our fellow Jews in the Soviet Union.

In the coming month, we hope to have dialogues on our activities and we is welcome your ideas. If you are interested in programs on the Nuclear Freeze, separation of church and state, the challenge of the religious right, the Human Life Bill and other Jewish responses to our current dilemmas, let us hear from you.

The next meeting of the Social Action Committee will be on Tuesday, November 16th. Everyone is welcome to attend or to call in your ideas.

¶10 ALL MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF TEMPLE RODEF SHALOM who gave or tried to give blood to Allan S. Tober, (son of Bernie & Jo Toher) in May of this year...... Thank you all for your gift of life to our son Allan. Our whole family is grateful to all of you. The call for blood was answered by hundreds of wonderful human beings all over the Washington area. Allan used 55 pints of blood in all.

Allan is home now and walking with a cane. He still receives physical, occupational and speech therapy at the National Orthopedic Hospital in Arlington and at home. It will be awhile before Allan can go back to work, but in his own words he says a big "thank you for helping me live again."

Allan, his wife and family are now involved in the SUPPORT group at the Washington Hospital Center, helping with other people who are going through Shock Trauma.

The Tober family, Jo, Bernie, Becky (Allans wife) Allan, David & Michael (brothers)
