Even so, and in spite the large number of EBs and the huge amount of observational data obtained mainly by space missions, the ways of getting the appropriate information for their physical parameters etc. is either from their light curves and/or from their period variations via the study of their (O-C) diagrams. The latter express the differences between the observed, O, and the calculated, C, times of minimum light. Thus, old and new light curves analysis methods of EBs to obtain their principal parameters will be considered, with examples mainly from our own observational material, and their subsequent light curves analysis using either old or new methods. Similarly, the orbital period changes of EBs via their (O-C) diagrams are referred to with emphasis on the use of continuous methods for their treatment in absence of sudden or abrupt events. Finally, a general discussion is given concerning these two topics as well as to a few related subjects. April flew by pretty quickly, and with the world slowly thawing from the long winter, why shouldn’t it? To celebrate, we decided we’re going to try to start holding our monthly meetings at Highland Road Park Observatory again, only with the added twist of incorporating an on-line component for those who for whatever reason don’t feel like making it out. To that end, we’ll have both our usual live broadcast on the BRAS YouTube channel and the Brasmeet page on Jitsi—which is where our out of town guests and, at least this month, our guest speaker can join us.

From existing projects or simply conversations, research ideas appear, are developed, take shape, sometimes take a detour into some un- expected directions, often need to be refocused, are sometimes divided up and/or distributed among collaborators, and are (hopefully) published. After a number of these cycles repeat, something bigger may be born, all of which one then tries to simultaneously fit into one’s head for what feels like a challenging amount of time. That was certainly the case a long time ago when writing a PhD dissertation. Since then, there have been postdoctoral fellowships and appointments, permanent and adjunct positions, and former, current, and future collaborators. And yet, con- versations spawn research ideas, which take many different turns and may divide up into a multitude of approaches or related or perhaps unrelated subjects. Again, one had better figure out with whom one likes to work. And again, in the process of writing this Brief, one needs create something bigger by focusing the relevant pieces of work into one (hopefully) coherent manuscript. It is an honor, a privi- lege, an amazing experience, and simply a lot of fun to be and have been working with all the people who have had an influence on our work and thereby on this book. Bond1 1 Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, MD, USA E-mail contact: [email protected] V838 Monocerotis is an unusual variable star that underwent a sudden outburst in 2002. Unlike a classical nova, which quickly evolves to high temperatures, V838 Mon remained an extremely cool, luminous supergiant throughout its eruption. It continues to illuminate a spectacular series of light echoes, as the outburst light is scattered from nearby circumstellar dust. V838 Mon has an unresolved B3 V companion star. During a program of spectroscopic monitoring of V838 Mon, we serendipitously discovered that a neighboring 16th magnitude star is also of type B. We then carried out a spectroscopic survey of other stars in the vicinity, revealing two more B-type stars, all within 45′′ of V838 Mon. We have determined the distance to this sparse, young cluster based on spectral classification and photometric main-sequence fitting of the three B stars. The cluster distance is found to be 6.2 ± 1.2 kpc, in excellent agreement with the geometric distance to V838 Mon of 6.1 kpc obtained from Hubble Space Telescope polarimetry of the light echoes. An upper limit to the age of the cluster is about 25 Myr, and its reddening is E(B - V) = 0.85.
