Women of the Seediq weave clothes and quilts for their families as they believe that only women with good weaving skill can pass through the Rainbow Bridge and be reunited with ancestors after they die. However, due to changing society, there is little demand for weaving today, and the norms observed by their ancestors are gradually disappearing, resulting in the declining number of locals capable of weaving. The weaving techniques of these Indigenous people are on the verge of disappearing. Unfortunately, when the government took measures to preserve the techniques by registering Seta Bakan as the preserver of intangible cultural heritage, and launched training classes to save such techniques, no locals were initially interested in learning weaving. After non-Seediq people were allowed to participate in learning, the course attracted weaving lovers from all over the island. The course included five learning phases within four years, which were given in urban communities. In the fourth year, the weaving teacher was invited to carry out a course to teach in her Indigenous village. -

ACADEMIC WORLD of Tourism Studies vol.1 The Selection Process of National Park Landscape Areas and the Imaginative geographies in Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Period Koji KANDA This paper discusses the relationship between the selection process of national park landscapes and the imaginative geographies in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period, focusing on the ambivalent and contradictory nature of modern spatiality. In 1937, three national parks were designated in Taiwan by the Taiwan Colonial Government: the The Tatun National Park, The Tsugitaka- Taroko National Park and The Niitaka-Ali Mountains National Park. In this selection, criteria used in choosing national parks in mainland Japan were directly applied to those in Taiwan, which was characterized by mountain landscapes; selecting the natural and majestic landscapes symbolising the great Japanese Empire was considered to flaunt Japanese superiority and attract tourists from all over the world. The selection was met with opposition that asserted distinctive characteristics of Taiwan in the tropical landscapes, which was also rare and thus attractive as a tourist site. Such opposition was however denied as suitability to the Japanese standard, benefits to health and wellbeing of the Japanese residents, and proximity to Taipei City were more of the priority, and furthermore, tourism potential was considered inappropriate in selecting national parks. The paper shows, in the dynamic process of the production of space for national parks in the colonial Taiwan, that the selection of Taiwanese national parks was related to the identity politics of spatial scale between Taiwan and Japan, and that the relations between nationalism and tourism were not always harmonious. -

Warriors as the Feminised Other The study of male heroes in Chinese action cinema from 2000 to 2009 A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Chinese Studies at the University of Canterbury by Yunxiang Chen University of Canterbury 2011 i Abstract ―Flowery boys‖ (花样少年) – when this phrase is applied to attractive young men it is now often considered as a compliment. This research sets out to study the feminisation phenomena in the representation of warriors in Chinese language films from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China made in the first decade of the new millennium (2000-2009), as these three regions are now often packaged together as a pan-unity of the Chinese cultural realm. The foci of this study are on the investigations of the warriors as the feminised Other from two aspects: their bodies as spectacles and the manifestation of feminine characteristics in the male warriors. This study aims to detect what lies underneath the beautiful masquerade of the warriors as the Other through comprehensive analyses of the representations of feminised warriors and comparison with their female counterparts. It aims to test the hypothesis that gender identities are inventory categories transformed by and with changing historical context. Simultaneously, it is a project to study how Chinese traditional values and postmodern metrosexual culture interacted to formulate Chinese contemporary masculinity. It is also a project to search for a cultural nationalism presented in these films with the examination of gender politics hidden in these feminisation phenomena. With Laura Mulvey‘s theory of the gaze as a starting point, this research reconsiders the power relationship between the viewing subject and the spectacle to study the possibility of multiple gaze as well as the power of spectacle. -

The Nationalist Party first defined the Incident as a rebellion by pro-Japanese forces and communist saboteurs. As the enemy of the Nationalist Party in China’s Civil War (1946-1949), the Chinese Communist Party initially interpreted the Incident as a Taiwanese fight for political autonomy in the party’s wartime propaganda, and then reinterpreted the event as an anti-Nationalist uprising under its own leadership. -

sustainability Article Taipei and Seoul’s Modern Urbanization under Japanese Colonial Rule: A Comparative Study from the Present-Day Context Yeonkyung Lee Institute of Convergence Research Institute of Regional Humanities and Information, Incheon National University, Incheon 21999, Korea; [email protected]; Tel.: +82-10-5019-5372 Received: 29 April 2020; Accepted: 7 June 2020; Published: 11 June 2020 Abstract: Both Taipei and Seoul underwent a process of colonization and modern urbanization during the early part of the 20th century, under Japanese rule. In both countries, urban-planning projects from the colonial period have had a great impact on recent urban changes. This comparative analysis aims to identify the characteristics of modern cities with Japanese colonial histories, focusing on the following three aspects: (1) Urban structure based on spatial distribution by ethnic group; (2) Japanese colonial urban planning; and (3) modern boulevards that convey the power and spectacle of a colonial city. Taipei and Seoul have multi-cores because the Japanese and Taiwanese/Korean areas were not clearly separated spatially. Secondly, Japanese colonial urban planning was influenced by Japanese settlements and government facilities. Thirdly, the main boulevards in each city, created through modern urban planning, combine modern streetscapes with imperial spectacle. These boulevards took on an important political meaning after liberation. Comparative studies of Taipei and Seoul can illuminate the difference between modern cities with a Japanese colonial history and colonial cities under European rule. Such comparisons make it possible to analyze the meaning, value, and relevance of colonial remnants, including urban structure and artifacts, for each city’s sustainable future. -

In Taiwan, the annual average PM2.5 concentrations were found to be 28.9, 24.1, 21.4, 20.2, –3 and 19.9 µg m in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017, respectively, which indicated that the annual variations in PM2.5 levels were decreasing during the study period. The average increases (+)/decreases (–) of PM2.5 concentrations were –16.7%, –11.1%, –5.75%, and –1.73% from 2013 to 2014, from 2014 to 2015, from 2015 to 2016, and from 2016 to 2017, respectively. Based to the relationship between PM10 values and total PCDD/F concentrations obtained from previous studies, we estimated that in 2017, the annual average total PCDD/Fs-TEQ concentrations ranged between 0.0148 –3 –3 (Lienchiang County) and 0.0573 pg WHO2005-TEQ m (Keelung City), and averaged 0.0296 pg WHO2005-TEQ m , while –1 the PM2.5-bound total PCDD/Fs-TEQ content ranged from 0.302 (Kaohsiung City) to 0.911 ng WHO2005-TEQ g –1 (Keelung City), at an average of 0.572 ng WHO2005-TEQ g . -
