PEACE IN VIETNAM! BEHEIREN: TRANSNATIONAL ACTIVISM AND GI MOVEMENT IN POSTWAR JAPAN 1965-1974 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN POLITICAL SCIENCE AUGUST 2018 By Noriko Shiratori Dissertation Committee: Ehito Kimura, Chairperson James Dator Manfred Steger Maya Soetoro-Ng Patricia Steinhoff Keywords: Beheiren, transnational activism, anti-Vietnam War movement, deserter, GI movement, postwar Japan DEDICATION To my late father, Yasuo Shiratori Born and raised in Nihonbashi, the heart of Tokyo, I have unforgettable scenes that are deeply branded in my heart. In every alley of Ueno station, one of the main train stations in Tokyo, there were always groups of former war prisoners held in Siberia, still wearing their tattered uniforms and playing accordion, chanting, and panhandling. Many of them had lost their limbs and eyes and made a horrifying, yet curious, spectacle. As a little child, I could not help but ask my father “Who are they?” That was the beginning of a long dialogue about war between the two of us. That image has remained deep in my heart up to this day with the sorrowful sound of accordions. My father had just started work at an electrical laboratory at the University of Tokyo when he found he had been drafted into the imperial military and would be sent to China to work on electrical communications. He was 21 years old. His most trusted professor held a secret meeting in the basement of the university with the newest crop of drafted young men and told them, “Japan is engaging in an impossible war that we will never win.

  • THE 36TH FEBRUARY STAKES (G1) Japanese Horse Racing, Which Is Influenced by British Racing, Is Held Mainly on Turf
FROM: Masahiro Usuda General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: February 17, 2019 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 36TH FEBRUARY STAKES (G1) Japanese horse racing, which is influenced by British racing, is held mainly on turf. However, dirt tracks that were popular in the U.S., quickly became widely used around the country since the Tokyo Racecourse implemented a new dirt track in 1960. While the mainstream of major JRA races remained over turf, the February Stakes (then called February Handicap), which was established in 1984 in conjunction with the new grading system, was one of just three graded dirt races at the time—the current number of graded dirt events is 15. The race was upgraded to G2 in 1994 and then to G1 in 1997, and stood as the highest-prized event until the Japan Cup Dirt (called the Champions Cup from 2014) took over in 2000. Past winners include Wing Arrow (JPN, by Assatis; ’00), Agnes Digital (USA, by Crafty Prospector; ’02), Gold Allure (JPN, by Sunday Silence; ’03), Admire Don (JPN, by Timber Country; ’04), Kane Hekili (JPN, by Fuji Kiseki; ’06), Vermilion (JPN, by El Condor Pasa; ’08), Espoir City (JPN, by Gold Allure; ’10), Transcend (JPN, by Wild Rush; ’11), Copano Rickey (JPN, by Gold Allure; ’14&’15) and Gold Dream (’17)—all ten are winners of multiple-G1 races as well as JRA Award winners. This year’s line-up featured 2018 Champions Cup (G1, dirt, 1,800m; Dec.2) contenders Sunrise Soar and last year’s February Stakes champion Nonkono Yume, who finished third and seventh, respectively, while runner-up Omega Perfume went on to claim his first G1 title in the Tokyo Daishoten (G1, dirt, 2,000m) three weeks later with 2017 Best Dirt Horse Gold Dream in second.

OMCATROCBHE R2 2 9 2T0H2 02020 ISSVUOEL 2 091 1 OTI GAZETTE The official newsletter of OTI RACING and Management Aidan O’Brien’s Reputation Goes to a New Level IN THIS WEEK'S Aidan O’Brien and his sons’ reputations as trainers went to a new level last EDITION weekend when they decided to withdraw their horses from feature European races, along with Roger Varian. Not surprisingly, some of their peers who were also supplied by the feed merchants at the centre of this Upcoming OTI Runners OTI Fun and Games OTI NEWS controversy, decided otherwise! A CONVERSATION Given the apparent clearance of the infected product in Ireland, O’Brien WITH could well have “ran the gauntlet” in the hope that any trace of Zilpaterol DEANE LESTER would have left the horses’ systems by race time. He chose instead to scratch and hence protect himself, his horses and indeed the industry from possible negative consequences. JOHN BERRY Aidan O’Brien is a tall poppy, a natural target for some of his competitors GET TO KNOW YOUR and those who thrive on innuendo. Unfortunately for them, the reality is FELLOW OTI OWNERS that he is a training genius. As competitive as he is, we also now know that - TRACEY CHAPMAN he is not a ‘win at all costs’ merchant. Through his actions last weekend that potentially cost some horses a stallion career, he displayed a level of integrity that many of us would like to see throughout racing. FUN & GAMES In the meantime, those who ‘ran the gauntlet’ in the hope that their horses DICK WHITTINGTON will produce clear swabs, will endure a few sleepless nights waiting for results.
