was born in 1942. In the United States at that time, it was common for women to be paid less than men Ifor the same job, and women were refused pro- motions. A number of states had laws that allowed homosexuals to be imprisoned. Many states and mu- nicipalities required businesses to close on Sundays and some “holy days.” In some parts of the country, if a black man looked at a white woman’s face while passing on a sidewalk, he might be killed in a public hanging by members of the Ku Klux Klan, a Protes- tant denomination. In other countries, those kinds of practices, and some even more egregious (such as the Holocaust) were commonplace. “Sincerely held” religious beliefs were the justi- fication. I am sure that everyone here is aware that similar conditions are still common in many of the countries where religion and government are not separated. I gradually came to realize that many of the things I was taught during five years attending Photo by Ingrid Laas Catholic schools did not make any logical sense, Hank Zumach, left, presented FFRF Co-Presidents Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor with the Henry H. and were, in fact, contrary to the basic teaching of Zumach Award, including a plaque and $10,000 gift to FFRF.
