DIY TOP TIPS PAINTING WALLS Following on from our last tutorial on painting ceilings, in almost all cases, it is much easier and quicker to paint walls using a roller. Starting in any corner, paint down each corner of the room using a brush. Cut into the ceiling or coving next. Then using your roller fill in the bare wall to complete. If possible, always do a whole wall (or even better, the whole room) in one go. If you think you are going to run out of paint or time halfway across a wall, do not start. It is better to make sure you have both time and paint to finish, or you risk having visible lines and ridges in Pictured in Kilgarvan with the Eucharistic Congress Bell which the paint where the edge has dried. was touring Kerry in November. Further information from Kathlyn on 086 8125015 WALLPAPER Textured wallpaper should be painted with a deep pile roller to ensure that the paint gets into all the little pits and bumps. Ordinary flat wallpaper can be painted over with a standard roller, but make sure it is well attached to the wall first. Dark wallpaper will usually require several coats if you are using a light colour. Don’t try to paint over metallic wallpaper as the metallic areas are very hard to cover and will show through the coats of emulsion. Simply strip the wallpaper off and start again. PAINTED PLASTER If there is already a sound layer of paint over the base plaster, you can simply paint over it. Give it a clean first as this will remove any grease and dirt and give the new paint a better surface to key to. Dark colours will require 2-3 coats of lighter emulsion (if using) to cover them. If you are painting over gloss paint, give it a rub back as this will give you a rougher edge and give the paint something to key to.
