At least thirty kings, princes, priests, prophets, servants, sons, trumpet players, and gatekeep- ers claim this name, which means “Jehovah remembers.”1 We should not be surprised to find some confusion about the biblical Zechariahs given that the name spans over a thousand years and fifty-five separate verses. It appears that the Gospel of Matthew may have confused two Zechariahs. Chapter 23 men- tions the ninth-century high-priestly martyr Zechariah but incorrectly assigns him a different father—Barachias, the father of thesixth-century prophet. Where Matthew mixed up the two Zechariahs, the parallel account found in Luke 11:51 did not.

This text is in the public domain in the US because it was published prior to 1923. Printed by R. & R. CLARK, Edinburgh. The Talmud, by Joseph Barclay, [1878], at sacred-texts.com [p. v] PREFACE. THE following selection of treatises, translated from the Mishna, with explanations from the Gemara and other sources, is designed to supply the reader with a general and impartial view of this important branch of Hebrew literature. These treatises are chosen because they illustrate Bible teaching; and it is attempted to present them in a literal and readable form. Those are omitted which are either too tedious or too gross for general circulation. It will be observed that these treatises contain the particular mode of thought against which the deepest woes of the New Testament are denounced; while, at the same time, they afford much information concerning the inner life of the Jews at the period of our Saviour's sojourn upon earth. Hence the reason is apparent why the Talmud is either undervalued or overvalued, according to the reader's standpoint.

  • 30 the Edinburgh Reviewer on the Talmud. Ashkelon
30 THE EDINBURGH REVIEWER ON THE TALMUD. IN the July number of the Edinburgh Review, the author of the paper on the Talmud remarks on my version of the " Tract on the Mea surements of the Temple" (see Quarterly Statement of the Palestine Ex ploration· Fund for 1872, p. 12), that it is translated with" less than absolute accuracy." The instance given to prove this observation is that " the translator has provided the guards of the Temple with cushions." It is the author of the Mishna, and not the translator, who has done so. If the reviewer be acquainted with the Hebrew language he must know that the word (,li,O.:l) means "his cushion" or" pillow." And though Rabbi Judah Hakkodesh says afterwards that" his garments (,',l::l) were burned" yet the explanation is obvious. The drowsy Levite reclined in his clothes, which became his cushion, and when he was found sleeping they were set on fire by the captain of the watch. JOSEPH BARCLAY. ASHKELON. THE following letter, by the Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford~ will be read with interest. It has been despatched to the Society's explorers in Palestine, in the hope that the questions raised by Pro fessor Pusey may receive a satisfactory solution:- DEAR MR. GROVE,-Thank you very much for your reply. I had, perhaps, better say· what my ground is for thinking that the As calon of the Crusades cannot be the Philistine Ashkelon. You have yourself, I see (Diet. of Bible, Jabneel), drawn attention to the Maiumas of Gaza and Ascalon, and Jamnia.

  • Hebrew Roots/Messianic Christian Zionism Warning -Part 1
Hebrew Roots/Messianic Christian Zionism Warning -Part 1 To Embrace Hebrew Roots: Part I There is a growing movement within Christianity, which contends that Christians need "to return to their Hebrew Roots." The leaders of this movement purport to be teaching believers the "Hebrew Roots of Christianity" through the study of the Jewish foundational teachings. Having been enjoined to study "Hebrew Roots", it is only reasonable that one must take a close look at the teachings of the Messianic and Hebrew Roots movements, as well as the Hebrew faith itself. We are reminded in Colossians 2:6-9: "As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him: Rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." Is the Hebrew Roots, as some might suggest, merely the study of the Old Testament, which Christians already study in light of the New Testament? What do the Hebrew foundational teachings expound with regard to the New Testament, the Messiah, the divinity of Jesus Christ, the Persons or Manifestations of God, the Bible and the character of God? I could never accept the concept of being spoon-fed answers to my questions from those promoting the movement or belief that is questionable. To embrace the Hebrew Roots theology without a full review and understanding of its teachings, would be blindness on our part and lead to ignoring the many warnings we find in the Word of God.
