Through her work, she hopes to foster sonic environments which address understandings of social systems, identity politics, interpersonal relations, and encourages the unlearning of dominant vernaculars. [email protected] w: aiyanabraun.com Short Bio Aiyana Braun (b. 1997) is a composer and sound artist who seeks to facilitate collaborative, intimate musical spaces in which deeply personal works may be cultivated. Her music has been performed by the New York Philharmonic, Berkeley Symphony, Oxford Alternative Orchestra, Curtis Symphony Orchestra, MusicaNova Orchestra, among others. At the age of fifteen, her first orchestra composition was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic; another work, commissioned by Maya Angelou and Norman Lear, she performed at the Marian Anderson Awards in the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall to which Maya Angelou expressed Aiyana’s music “touched me deeply.” She has additionally been commissioned by Danny Matsukawa of the Philadelphia Orchestra (Principal Bassoon), Eric Bartlett and Jon Deak of the New York Philharmonic (Cello, and Associate Principal Bass), Andrea Obiso of Orchestra dell’Accademia.

The Brandenburg Concertos were one such unsuccessful attempt for recognition. They were named after Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of Brandenburg, who Bach only met once—in 1719 during a trip to Berlin. The Margrave asked for some of his music but it took two years for Bach to deliver, at which time his employer, Prince Leopold of Cöthen, was having financial difficulties and Bach was probably looking for leads on a new job. Bach gathered six concertos with vastly different instrumentations, made revisions, and sent them to the Margrave. Not only did Bach not get a job, there is no record the Margrave ever listened to them or even acknowledged Bach’s gift. The Brandenburgs remained virtually unknown until the Bach revival of the mid-19th century.

Since his stunning orchestral debut at the age of eleven with the San Francisco Symphony, he has won the admiration and respect of audiences, critics and fellow musicians with his passionate and polished performances. That debut inspired one critic to write: 'In the 1920's it was Yehudi Menuhin; in the 1930's it was Isaac Stern; and last night it was Jaime Laredo.' His education and development were greatly influenced by his teachers Josef Gingold and Ivan Galamian, as well as by private coaching with eminent masters Pablo Casals and George Szell. At the age of seventeen, Jaime Laredo won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition, launching his rise to international prominence. Dukas wrote Villanelle (1906) as an educational work for the Paris Conservatory. There is a “meet- the-instrument” quality to this piece that includes usage of the natural horn (intentional uncorrected intonation, employment of the hand to change pitches) and various HORN PLAYERS ARE PRIVILEGED TO PERFORM SOME OF other effects unique to the instrument.

An interview with Mimi Stillman by Wendy Stern imi Stillman, called “a magically gifted flutist, a breath of fresh air” by The Washington Post, is internationally Macclaimed for performances as soloist and chamber musician at major concert halls and festivals throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico. At 12, Ms. Stillman was the youngest wind player ever admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, where she received her bachelor of music degree in 1999, studying with Julius Photo: Ira Peppercorn Baker and Jeffrey Khaner. In preparation for this interview, Mimi and I had many email conversations before we met in person just after the Dolce Suono Trio’s first concert of the season, in Philadelphia on October 22. WENDY STERN: In the ’90s, I remember Julius Baker raving about his wonderfully gifted young Curtis student, and I am so glad we have finally met…you sounded absolutely gorgeous in this evening’s concert. The performance was rich in musical variety, sonority, and texture, and the ensemble conveyed an obvious joy in making music with one another. MIMI STILLMAN: I appreciate your kind words. It’s so meaningful to hear from people who were close to Julius Baker, as he was such an important, nurturing, and much- loved person for me. Cellist Yumi Kendall and pianist Charles Abramovic, my Dolce Suono Trio colleagues, are some of my closest friends, as well as In Concert musical partners.
