Page 2 Knightly Knews Tootsie Roll Drive… May 10-11th Our annual drive will be held on May 10 -11th . We will be collecting the money and passing out the tootsie rolls. I cannot thank you enough what this means to our cause. Phone calls will be made the end of April but you don’t have to wait until then, give us a call and we will put your name on the list to help children far less fortunate than ourselves. Call Dana or Dan . ======Officer Nominations for the year 2008-09…. During the month of April & May, we hold nominations for our council. Then during the month of June, we hold the elections. Please consider holding one of the positions. If you are interested or want to nominate someone, please get a hold of one of the Trustees. It really is a pleasure to serve as an officer. Many who are new to our ranks, and even some of those who have been around for a number of years, may be unclear as to what each of the officers on the council is responsible for. Because of this lack of knowledge, one may not want to run for an officer position for fear of what is entailed. To help remedy this, I have decided that I would focus on the description of what the duties of each position are in hopes that more may become interested in serving as an officer in the council in the future. I have listed the position and the current officer in that position. Please take a moment and read over the positions and feel free to talk to any of the officers if you have questions or if you would be interested in the pursuing a position on the council. Elections will be held in June for the next fiscal year. Grand Knight The Grand Knight is responsible for the welfare of the council. He presides over council meetings, acts as an ex-officio member of all committees, appoints a membership and programming director, convenes officers for a monthly meeting, and ensures all neces- sary reports are submitted to the state and Supreme Council. He should also be aware of the council’s financial status and ensure that his signature appears on all checks drawn. Deputy Grand Knight The deputy grand knight is second in command. He assists the grand knight with council affairs and fulfills all duties assigned to him by the grand knight. Should the grand knight be absent from a council meeting, the deputy grand knight will preside. He is chairman of the council’s retention committee. Chancellor The chancellor has a variety of responsibilities. Primarily, he assists the grand knight and deputy grand knight in the execution of their duties and oversees the council in both their absences. He is charged with strengthening the members’ interest in council ac- tivities. The chancellor is chairman of the admission committee. The chancellor is also the vocations chairman of the council and works with Father to promote vocations. Recorder The recorder is similar to a court reporter or secretary. He is responsible for maintaining a true record of all actions of the council and it’s correspondence. He is not responsible for publishing the council newsletter. Financial Secretary The financial secretary is appointed by the supreme knight upon recommendation of the council. His main area of responsibilities is maintaining all financial and membership records. He collects and receives all moneys from all sources, including annual dues from council members. He also handles supply orders for the council officers and members, filing the Report of Officer, and submitting all membership transactions to the Supreme Council. Treasurer The treasurer is responsible for the safekeeping and maintaining records of all council funds and accounts. He is responsible for depositing money into the council’s account and provides a certificate of such monies to the grand knight. He is also responsible for payment of all expenses. Lecturer The lecturer is appointed by the grand knight to provide both educational and entertaining programs to the council. He is responsi- ble for the “Good of the Order” portion of the meetings. In order to provide members with informative and education programs, he must be knowledgeable and aware of all council programming. Advocate The advocate is the legal representative of the council and serves as the council’s attorney at trials and investigations of any inter- est to the council. While he does not need to be a member of the legal profession, he should be familiar with the council’s by- laws, the Order’s Charter, Constitution and Laws, Methods of conducting a meeting, and Robert’s Rules of Order. Warden The warden is the ‘watchdog’ for council property and degree paraphernalia, except the property of the financial secretary, treasurer, and recorder. He is also responsible for setting up council chambers for meetings and ceremonial work. During ceremonial exemplifications, he will appoint and supervise guards. Inside/Outside Guards The guards have similar responsibilities, but distinct differences. The outside guard tends the outer door admitting visitors and member to the inner door. Once at the inner door, the inside guard checks to make sure that their membership cards are current. Trustees The board of trustees consists of thee members elected by the council and the grand knight, who serves as the chairman of the board. They oversee the work of the financial secretary and treasurer, and with the deputy grand knight serve on the council’s retention committee. They are charged with managing all council elections. During council elections, only the three-year trustee is voted on, with the others moving on to become two– and one-year trustees, respectively.

Page 4 Knightly Knews Pro-Life Report... Many children are deeply affected and often harmed by the divorce of their parents, and a great number of women and men experience emotional pain and psychological effects as a result of their experience with abortion. That was the message of an international panel of experts, who have studied these issues, and came together April 4- 5 in to help begin discussion of pastoral solutions to those affected. The Knights of Columbus and the Rome session of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and the Family at the Lateran University sponsored “Oil on the Wounds: A Response to the Aftermath of Divorce and Abor- tion.” The speakers came from eight countries, including several from and the .. “As an organization organized to protect families, we think it is absolutely necessary for society to take note of the effects of divorce and abortion, two things that do the most damage to the integrity of families in our society,” said Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, who moderated the opening session of the conference. “It is our hope that this conference will spur a greater ministry within the to these children whose stable family structure has been shattered, and to these parents, who grieve the abortion of their unborn child – often in isolation and silence” “Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI have often spoken of the importance of the family as the cornerstone of society, and both divorce and abortion strike at the heart of that cornerstone,” said Msgr. Livio Melina, president of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family headquartered at the Vatican. “We are here to discuss how the Church can help heal the wounds left by these two destructive forces.” Speakers on divorce included Prof. Rafaela Iafrate from the Centro Ateneo Studi e Ricerche sulla Famiglia in Milan, Elizabeth Marquardt, author of the book Between Two Worlds: The Inner Lives of Children of Divorce and researcher Joan B. Kelly, who, with Judith Wallerstein has done groundbreaking longitudinal studies on the subject, and is co- author of several books including Surviving the Breakup: How Children and Parents Cope with Divorce . On abortion, speakers included Vicki Thorn, founder of Project Rachel – an international network of outreach to parents with aborted children, Mother Agnes Mary Donavan, of the Sisters of Life in the United States, Dr. E. Joanne Angelo of Tufts University School of Medicine and Dominique Vandier of the Association Agapa in , . The conference is the result of a discussion begun with several papers delivered by Carl Anderson last year at the Lateran University on these two topics. Anderson served as founding vice president and first dean of the U.S. session of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington, D.C

Cemetary Clean-up…. We will be doing outside clean up work for our parish in the cemetery across Wallen Rd from the school. We would like to do this a Saturday morning during the spring. Depending on what kind of weather we have, we may try to clean one Saturday, during late April or early May. We pull weeds, clean up trash, clean the crucifix on the stone altar, etc. Please give me a call so we can have people lined up and ready to go when the weather cooperates. This is for the whole family to participate in. It is a good way to help your children understand the importance of helping others in their community.
