Prólogo El EvAngElio dE lA vidA: lA buEnA noticiA la carta encíclica del sumo Pontífice Juan Pabloii sobre el valor y el carácter inviolable de la vida humana es un documento cuya validez no se limita al momento en que fue publicado, hace 15 años, sino que se ha constituido en una profunda orientación de carácter permanente sobre el tema. nos recuerda la buena noticia de la vida que nos trajo Jesús: “yo he venido para que tengan vida y la tengan en abundancia”. su santidad el Papa Juan Pablo ii nos anuncia que “el evangelio de la vida está en el centro del mensaje de Jesús. acogido con amor cada día por la iglesia es anunciado con intrépida fidelidad como buena noticia de todas las épocas y culturas”. Por eso, el cuaderno humanitas n° 24 –Ocho reflexiones sobre la Evangelium vitae– que ahora se publica es muy pertinente: viene a fijar nuevamente la mirada en un tema de interés duradero en el tiempo, cual es el respeto y cuidado de la vida que nos ha regalado el señor. con este fin el presente cuaderno humanitas reúne a un grupo de personalidades de iglesia y del mundo académico que reflexionan sobre el significado del evangelio de la vida. ya desde su primer número, Humanitas ha incluido este tema en sus páginas, res- pondiendo a su misión de promover el encuentro entre la fe y la cultura. así, en el número correspondiente a enero-marzo de 1996 (n°1), esta publicación presentó un completo análisis de la encíclica firmado por monseñor carlo caffarra bajo el título “reflexiones en torno a la Evangelium vitae”, en cuya introducción se puede leer: “monseñor carlo caffarra, arzobispo de Ferrara [hoy cardenal arzobispo de bolonia], ex presidente del Pontificio instituto Juan Pablo II para estudios sobre el matrimonio y la Familia analiza en estas páginas el cuadro antropológico y cultural constituido por el primer capítulo de la encíclica Evangelium vitae, como escenario de la lucha entre la trinidad divina y la trinidad satánica –que busca imponer la cultura de la muerte–. cuando el ‘delito’ es llamado ‘derecho’ ya no nos enfrentamos a un simple ‘colapso moral’, sino a un ‘colapso mental’: la censura de la cuestión religiosa impuesta por el ambiente cultural contemporáneo ha desconectado la libertad de la verdad y ha llevado a la deformación de la subjetividad. es una situación ante la cual los cristianos no pueden declararse neutrales”. independiente de los 15 años que han transcurrido desde la publicación de esta en- H5 cíclica, el tema de la vida es propio y natural de todo ser humano. y aquellos que dirigimos la mirada a cristo sabemos que es él quien ha traído la vida al mundo. nos lo recuerda monseñor Jean-louis bruguès al término de la reflexión que desarrolla en este cuaderno humanitas n° 24: “¿Juan Pablo ii no trataba acaso de poner la razón y a aquellos que se consagran a su búsqueda, al servicio de la cultura de la vida?”. y lo dice frente al florecimiento de la cultura de la muerte que impera en ciertos sectores de la sociedad actual: “dicha cultura –sostiene monseñor bruguès– fomenta el aborto, el suicidio y la eutanasia”. Por su parte, monseñor livio melina, actual presidente del Pontificio instituto Juan Pablo ii para estudios sobre el matrimonio y la Familia, nos plantea en su artículo “riconoscere la vita. la questione epistemologica: vangelo, scienza ed etica” que “la cuestión de la vida es el corazón de la bioética”. nos dice que Evangelium vitae nos ha invitado a elaborar una nueva y auténtica cultura de la vida. de gran interés resulta también, en este cuaderno humanitas n° 24, el análisis del cardenal angelo scola, Patriarca de venecia y rector emérito de la universidad la- teranense, titulado “el bien y la inviolabilidad de la vida en la encíclica Evangelium vitae”. Frente a la pregunta ¿por qué la vida tiene valor y es inviolable?, su respuesta se resume en una breve frase: “la vida del hombre tiene valor, si tiene valor el hombre”. monseñor Fernando chomali, obispo auxiliar de santiago, nos recuerda en su artículo que “la preocupación de Juan Pablo ii por el tema de la vida está en el centro de su solicitud pastoral” y que esta carta en particular tiene varios propósitos: “denunciar los atentados en contra de la vida que constituyen una verdadera conjura en contra de ésta; anunciar el valor de la vida humana, promoverla y defenderla en los más amplios campos de la cultura (…) el Papa Juan Pablo ii la escribe arraigado en sólidos fundamentos, aportados por la ciencia, la filosofía y la teología, consciente de que las alas de la razón y la fe se alzan juntas a la hora de una búsqueda sincera de la verdad”. el rector emérito de la Pontificiau niversidad católica de chile y Presidente emérito de la Pontificia academia para la vida, doctor Juan de dios vial correa, orienta su reflexión a la doctrina social inscrita en la encíclica: e“ n orden a simplificar este análisis –nos advierte– cabe concentrarse en la cuestión del aborto, asunto muy ilustrativo por cuanto él no es hoy tanto un problema médico como ideológico y social”. el catedrático de la universidad de roma tor vergata y ex presidente del comité de bioética del estado italiano, Profesor Francesco d’agostino, analiza el tema de la inocencia y el derecho contenido en el trasfondo de la Evagelium vitae, mientras que angelo serra, Profesor emérito de genética humana de la Pontificiau niversidad del sacro cuore, concentra sus consideraciones en la familia en el marco del tercer milenio. el evangelio de la vida es, pues, la buena noticia que nos trae este cuaderno huma- nitas n° 24. la reflexión del Papa Juan Pablo ii nos ilumina cada vez que volvemos a poner nuestro corazón en sus santas palabras. su invitación queda claramente señalada H6 cuando nos dice al término de la encíclica Evangelium vitae: “y mientras, como pueblo peregrino, pueblo de la vida y para la vida, caminamos confiados hacia ‘un cielo nue- vo y una tierra nueva’, dirigimos la mirada a aquélla que para nosotros es ‘señal de esperanza cierta y de consuelo’… oh, maría, aurora del mundo nuevo, madre de los vivientes, a ti confiamos la causa de la vida”. The importance of the document is perhaps even more apparent today than twenty−five years ago. That is why the Pontifical Council for the Laity convened the Seminar in October 2013 on the theme “God entrusts the human being to the woman”, taken from paragraph 30 of Mulieris Dignitatem. The anthropological reflection offered by this important document of the magisterium was prepared by Pope John Paul II for his memorable Wednesday catechesis on the “theology of the body” held in the early years of his pontificate.1 As we know, Mulieris Dignitatem was drafted in response to a suggestion by the Synod of Bishops that was held in 1987 to discuss the subject of the lay faithful. It ,was published three months before the post−synodal apostolic exhortation Christifideles Laici which collected and reworked the results of that important Synod. There is a close connection between the two documents.

    Curriculum vitae L I V I O M E L I N A Nato ad Adria il 18 agosto 1952 da Giovanni Melina e Giovanna Ingegneri, primo di cinque figli. Ha conseguito la maturità classica presso il Liceo Ginnasio “C. Bocchi” di Adria nell’anno scolastico 1970/71, con voto 60 su 60. Dopo aver frequentato la Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia dell’Università Statale di Padova dal 1971 al 1975, nell’anno accademico 1974/75 (sessione di febbraio 1976) vi ha ottenuto la Laurea in Filosofia, discutendo una tesi su “L’ontologia storica di Gaston Fessard”, diretta dal Prof. Franco Chiereghin, Ordinario di Filosofia Morale (voto : 110 e lode su 110). Entrato successivamente nel Seminario Vescovile della Diocesi di Adria, ha frequentato la Sezione della Facoltà Teologica Interregionale dell’Italia Settentrionale, presso il Seminario Maggiore di Padova (1976/79). Ha frequentato anche, per un anno, il Corso alla Licenza in Sacra Teologia presso lo Studio teologico Accademico Bolognese (1979/80). E’ stato ordinato sacerdote per la Diocesi di Adria-Rovigo il 21 giugno 1980. Dopo aver studiato Teologia Morale alla Pontificia Università Gregoriana di Roma (1980/1982), vi ha conseguito la Licenza in Teologia, con specializzazione in Teologia Morale, nell’anno accademico 1981/82 (voto : “summa cum laude”). La tesi di Licenza, seguita dal Prof. Klaus Demmer, aveva per titolo : “Chiesa e agire morale nel pensiero di Bernhard Haering”. On the one hand, the fundamental lessons taught by experience and by Christian doctrine continue to be considered and pro- posed as the expression of love’s ideal. On the other hand, they are perceived by many as ultimately unsuitable to the emotional experience of the men and women of our time.2 This state of affairs prompts us to study in greater depth the intrinsically pas- toral character of Christian doctrine, according to the teaching of Vatican Council II, lest the gospel of the family become ir- relevant especially in those societies that have largely fallen away from the practice of the Christian faith.

    Both More and No More: The Historical Split between Charity and Philanthropy: Benjamin Soskis In the urtext of modern philanthropy, “The Gospel of Wealth (1889),” Andrew Carnegie set out to instruct his peers on the proper means of disposing of a personal fortune. But before laying out the virtues of the active administration of wealth for the public good, he first had to demonstrate the folly of alternative approaches. Leaving millions to one’s children risked spoiling them, while money bequeathed to the public after death was all too often spent in ways that contravened the donor’s intent. Posthumous giving was both foolish—preventing the giver from employing the skills he had honed in accumulating his wealth toward its redistribution—and selfish, suggesting that the giver would not have left his gifts at all had he been able to bring them along to his final destination. To die rich was thus to die “disgraced.” Carnegie saved his fiercest denunciations for yet another mode of ill-considered giving. “Of every thousand dollars spent in so called charity to-day,” Carnegie famously announced, “it is probable that $950 is unwisely spent; so spent, indeed as to produce the very evils which it proposes to mitigate or cure.” In fact, he argued, “one of the serious obstacles to the improvement of our race is indiscriminate charity.” It would be better for such money to be thrown into the sea.1 Carnegie’s low estimation of “so called charity” was widely shared by his peers. From the moment that John Winthrop urged his fellow passengers aboard the Arbella to mold their new settlement into a “Modell of Christian Charity,” Americans have long regarded themselves as a nation of exceptional givers.

People who want to be instruments of Christ’s love to those who experience same-sex attraction (SSA) seek guidance on how best to do so.
