Rediscovery of Tetratheca nuda var. spartea (Elaeocarpaceae) in south-west Western Australia and elevation to specific rank asTetratheca spartea. Nuytsia 18: 39–47 (2008). Tetratheca nuda Lindl. var. spartea Planch. ex Benth. was named by Bentham in 1863 from material collected from an unspecified locality by Drummond in 1843. Mueller placed the name in synonymy under T. virgata Steetz in 1882, but Thompson recognised and lectotypified the name in 1976, reiterating the close affinity with T. nuda but querying the status of the taxon. The taxon was known only from the type material until a 2005 collection from near Toodyay was confirmed as comparable with the type. -

In this paper we review the definition and occurrence of obdiplostemony, and analyse how the condition has impacted on floral diversification and species evolution. Key Results Obdiplostemony represents an amalgamation of at least five different floral developmental pathways, all of them leading to the external positioning of the alternisepalous stamen whorl within a two-whorled androe- cium. In secondary obdiplostemony the antesepalous stamens arise before the alternisepalous stamens. The position of alternisepalous stamens at maturity is more external due to subtle shifts of stamens linked to a weakening of the alternisepalous sector including stamen and petal (type I), alternisepalous stamens arising de facto externally of antesepalous stamens (type II) or alternisepalous stamens shifting outside due to the sterilization of antesepalous sta- mens (type III: Sapotaceae). -

We discuss the landscapes of Botany Bay and particularly of the historic landing place at Kurnell (lat 34˚ 00’ S, long 151˚ 13’ E) (about 16 km south of central Sydney), as described in the journals of Lieutenant James Cook and Joseph Banks on the Endeavour voyage in 1770. We list 132 plant species that were collected at Botany Bay by Banks and Daniel Solander, the first scientific collections of Australian flora. The list is based on a critical assessment of unpublished lists compiled by authors who had access to the collection of the British Museum (now Natural History Museum), together with species from material at National Herbarium of New South Wales that has not been previously available. The list includes Bidens pilosa which has been previously regarded as an introduced species. In 1770 the Europeans set foot on Aboriginal land of the Dharawal people. Since that time the landscape has been altered in response to a succession of different land-uses; farming and grazing, commemorative tree planting, parkland planting, and pleasure ground and tourist visitation. -
Bauera Rubioides
Bauera rubioides Family: Baueraceae Distribution: Forests and heaths of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. Common Dog rose or river rose. Name: Derivation of Bauera...After Ferdinand Bauer, 19th century botanical Name: illustrator. rubioides...similar to the genus Rubia. Conservation Not considered to be at risk in the wild. Status: General Description: Bauera is a small genus of three shrubby species, all occurring in eastern Australia. Of these, Bauera rubioides is the best known as it has been in general cultivation for many years. Two botanical varieties are recognised: var.rubioides and var.microphylla. The latter differs from the normal form in its smaller leaves and more scrambling habit. It also usually has white or very pale pink flowers. Bauera rubioides Photo: Brian Walters B.rubioides is a small, bushy shrub between 0.3 and 1.5 metres in height. It has small leaves which are comprised of 3 leaflets closely attached to the stems. The leaves are about 50-100 mm long. The flowers appear mainly in spring but may often be seen at other times of the year. They are about 8-12 mm in diameter and occur on slender stalks (pedicels) from the leaf axils. The flower colour is usually deep to mid pink with a mass of yellow stamens in the centre - white forms are also common. Although often regarded as one of the easiest Australian plants for gardens, B.rubioides can be short lived unless its specific needs are met. It performs best in moist, well drained soils, in sun or light shade. -
