The West Wing Weekly 4.00: “President Bartlet Special” Guest: Martin Sheen [ad insert] [Intro Music] HRISHI: You’re listening to The West Wing Weekly. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. JOSH: And mine is Joshua Malina. This is a very special episode of Blossom, no, of The West Wing Weekly. We finally got to sit down with Martin Sheen and so we decided to celebrate. Let’s give him his own episode. The man deserves it. Hrishi and I were planning originally to pair our talk with Martin with our own conversation about the season opener “20 Hours in America” but then we decided to make an executive decision and give the president his own episode of the podcast. We hope you enjoy it. We think you will. HRISHI: Thank you so much for finding time to speak with us. MARTIN: I’m delighted. HRISHI: We actually have some gifts for you. MARTIN: You do? HRISHI: We do. Every president has a challenge coin and so we thought that President Bartlet deserves one too. MARTIN: Oh my…Thank you… HRISHI: [crosstalk] so here’s one. MARTIN: Look at that! Wow! Bartlet’s Army…ohh! Look at that…Do you know someone did a survey on the show for all of our seven years and do you know what the most frequent phrase was? “Hey.” ALL: [laughter] JOSH: That’s funny. That’s Sorkin’s legacy MARTIN: Exactly. How often do you remember saying it? I mean, did you ever do an episode where you didn’t say “hey” to somebody? JOSH: [crosstalk] That’s funny.

We have an exciting show for you--today we're talking about Episode 6:07 it's called “A Change Is Gonna Come.” JOSH: The teleplay by John Sacret Young and Josh Singer. It was directed by Vincent Misiano and it first aired on December 1, 2004--my 8th wedding anniversary. HRISHI: Whoo Hoo. [audience claps] JOSH: YEAH!! HRISHI: Here is a little bit about what happens in this episode: President Bartlet is supposed to go to China for a summit, a huge diplomatic mission. And Josh has been organizing it, but the whole thing threatens to unravel when the president accepts a flag of the Taiwanese Independence movement. Meanwhile, the primaries haven’t started yet, but the battle for the nomination definitely has. Hoynes returns with his book Full Disclosure, plus Vice President Russell squares off with the person widely seen as the favorite: Governor Baker of Pennsylvania. • The West Wing and the Cultivation of a Unilateral American Responsibility to Protect
ARTICLES PRIME-TIME SAVIORS: THE WEST WING AND THE CULTIVATION OF A UNILATERAL AMERICAN RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT AMAR KHODAY ABSTRACT Television programs and films are powerful visual mediums that inject various interpretations about law into the public stream of consciousness and can help shape public perception on various issues. This Article argues that the popular television series The West Wing (“TWW”) cultivated the notion of a unilateral American legal obligation to intervene and protect vulnerable populations from genocide in the context of a fictional African state by mimicking some of the factual circumstances that transpired during the Rwandan genocide. In creating an idealized vision of an American response to such humanitarian crises, the show effectively attempted to re- imagine Rwanda as a beneficiary of United States military force. This Article argues that in advancing a radical vision of unilateral humanitarian military interventions, TWW questionably propagated metaphors and caricatures that persist in human rights discourse as criticized by Makau Mutua—namely that Western states must act as saviors rescuing vulnerable and victimized third world populations from malevolent third world dictatorships. Furthermore, such caricatures deny non-Western populations a certain subjectivity and foster the idea that Western states must always come to the rescue. In addition, these caricatures paint the international community and fellow Western states like France as unwilling or unable to respond to such crises. Lastly, this Article

  • I Ask Is Peace and Quiet.” Recovery from Trauma in the Pawnbroker and the West Wing 1
Jaime Ashworth, ‘All I ask is peace and quiet’, Redefining Conflict in Post Cold War Media, University of Nottingham, 29-30 March, 2007 “All I ask is peace and quiet.” Recovery from Trauma in The Pawnbroker and The West Wing 1 Jaime Ashworth, University of Southampton This paper is concerned not so much with the Holocaust itself as with what Donald Bloxham has termed ‘the Holocaust metanarrative’: a ‘bundle of ideas and preconceptions handed down under the label ‘Holocaust’ that shapes the contours and parameters of our understanding of the subject.’2 What this means is that references to the Holocaust can be further and further shortened as the writer or artist can assume correspondingly greater knowledge on the part of their audience. This can be seen in books such as John Boyne’s recent bestseller The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas , which relies on the assumption that we can penetrate its punning – ‘Out-With’ for ‘Auschwitz’ and ‘the Fury’ for ‘the Fuhrer’ – for its mode of emplotment as a fable to work. Another fable, Roberto Benigni’s Life is Beautiful , does the same thing filmically 3. As Robert Eaglestone has written, the Holocaust has become ‘something wider, more significant, and, precisely because it is so all-pervasive, very much harder to pin down: a sense of “who we are” and ‘how the world is for us”.’4 This can be seen in the ‘i-tourist?’ project, intended to ‘cement[s] the link between the idea of holocaust tourism and the commodity form’5 by placing images which use the forms of commercial advertising to ‘promote’ the names of the sites to the right.

  • Debating Early Child Care
Debating Early Child Care Rob Crosnoe, University of Texas Tama Leventhal, Tufts University Population Research Center Ryan: A major study Wendt commissioned of 1,364 children showed a clear link between parents’ dumping their kids in day care and an increase in hyperactivity, lack of discipline, and violent behavior. Will: Can I see that? Josh: You’re saying Jeffrey Dahmer’s only problem was day care? Ryan: We’re always harping about the root causes of crime and violence. Josh: I work for the federal government. I’ve never heard of Wendt’s so-called “major federal study.” Will: Maybe that’s because all TV news programs are produced by mothers who dump their kids in day care.
