(Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) are characterized by their female-biased sex ratio. In these lines, most males die before reaching the middle larval stage. However, the cause of the bias remains unclear. We detected the proteobacterium Wolbachia in all individuals in the female-biased butterfly lines and in some of the lines with a normal sex ratio. Tet- racycline treatment of adult females of a female-biased line led to a significant increase in both the hatch rate of their eggs (F1) and the male-to-female ratio of F1 pupae. In addition, certain assays of tetracycline treatment on mother butterflies significantly increased the male to female ratio of F1 adults. Known bacterial sex ratio distorters other than Wolbachia were not detected by diagnostic PCR assay, nor by the sequencing of 16S rDNA amplified using general prokaryotic 16S rDNA primers. These results strongly suggest that the distortion of the sex ratio is due to the killing of males by the inherited Wolbachia. Sequences of the 16S rDNA amplified using Wolbachia-specific primers, the cell division protein gene ( ftsZ), the molecular chaperone groE genes (groE operon), and the Wolbachia surface protein gene (wsp) from Wolbachia in lines belonging to three subspecies of the butterfly (bolina, jacintha, and philippensis) revealed no variation among lines nor between female- biased lines and a normal one. -

New Records of Butterflies (Lepidoptera) from the Eastern Caroline Islands, Micronesia1 Donald W. Buden,2,5 Donald P. Sands,3 and W. John Tennent4 Abstract: Twenty-three new locality records are presented for nine species of butterflies (Lepidoptera) from 11 islands and island groups in the eastern Car- oline Islands, Micronesia. None is endemic; most occur widely in the Indo- Australian region and the islands of the western Pacific. The Lycaenidae were the most well-represented family with at least eight species. The nymphalid Hypolimnas bolina was the most frequently encountered species, occurring on all 11 island groups. Pakin Atoll, which was visited on two different occasions for a total of 5 days, was the only island group visited during this study where but- terflies were not seen. Mark-recapture studies of butterfly populations are often plagued by low recapture rates, which make population estimation problematic, One reason for low recaptures is that the handling process of capture, marking and release contributes to low and unequal catch ability of marked individuals. Here we report the results of an experiment conducted to evaluate the hypothesis that cooling individuals prior to release minimizes handling effects. The post-capture difference in site fidelity of territorial male Hypoiimnas bolina (L.) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) was compared among three groups: (1) males handled normally, (2) males chilled prior to release, and (3) uncaught controls. Un chilled males showed Significantly reduced site fidelity compared to both control and chilled butterflies. Furthermore, chilled butterflies re sumed activity after capture in a manner similar to uncaught controls. These results indicate that chilling bas tbe potential to minimize the ad verse effects uf handling on subsequent butterfly catchability, Since 'equal catchability' of caught and uncaught individuals is a critical assumption of mark-release-recapture programs, this method has the potential to greatly increase the accuracy of subsequent population esti mates. On this basis, in population studies on butterflies, the precise method of handling may prove a more meaningful consideration than tbe question of wbether or not to handle. -

COWIE2 The unique and fragile ecosystems of small, tropical, oceanic islands are more and more being challenged by both deliberate and inadvertent artificial introduc tions of alien species. That island species, especially endemics, are highly vulnerable to such introductions, and manifest a rate of extinction far in excessofthat ofcontinental species, is becoming widely accepted (e.g., Diamond 1984, Atkinson 1989). The Hawaiian Islands, with their high levels ofendemism and spectacular evolutionary radiations in many groups of both plants and animals, arguably have suffered the most severe impacts. The extremely high rate of extinction of the native biota and the modification of native habitat in the Hawaiian Islands are often, but not always, attributable to introduced predators, parasites, competitors, and so forth. Itwas therefore highly appropri ate that this symposium be held in Honolulu. Many of the presentations dealt with Hawaiian instances, reflecting not only the affiliations of the participants but also the concentration of the problems in Hawaii (and indeed the acute awareness of them, at least on the part of biologists). Nonetheless, the geographical coverage was broad-from Singapore to Hawaii and Guam to New Caledonia and the Society Islands. The subject matter was also broad, ranging widely across the plant and animal kingdoms, from trees to flies, snails to geckos. And, although many participants recounted numerous, depressing case histories, a positive, forward-looking management approach was often intimated and in some instances expounded. -

First Records of Butterflies (Lepidoptera) from the Republic of Nauru1 Donald W. Buden2,3 and W. John Tennent4 Abstract: Four species of butterflies are reported from Nauru for the first time and as first records of butterflies from the island republic. None is endemic. Three of the four species are widespread in Oceania: Badamia exclamationis (Fabricius), Danaeus plexippus (Linnaeus), and Hypolimnas bolina (Linnaeus). The other, Petrelaea tombugensis (Ro¨ber), belongs to a genus that also is wide- spread in the Pacific. The small number of widespread species found on Nauru is comparable with the situation encountered on other small, remote, low-lying Pacific islands.
