1990 at the AGM the Assembled Multitude Were Informed That Frank
1990 At the AGM the assembled multitude were informed that Frank Fischer, Timekeeper and Handicapper and our longest serving second claim member (he is actually a Kentish Wheeler) had offered to donate a perpetual trophy for the Ladies Open BAR. This was the Donovan 12-hour Trophy that Frank won for three consecutive 12-hour wins. However as the Kentish Whs are no longer a racing club he has presented the Trophy to us. The Trophy is now to be called the Fischer-Donovan Cup. The other earth shattering moment was when both Keith Butler and Alan Bristow were elected Vice-Presidents of the Club. They have been members since 1953 and 1954 respectively. Keith was a top class amateur winning the National Road Race Championship before going to Belgium and racing professionally for 4 years. He then won the Professional Road Race Championship and was in the Great Britain team supporting Tom Simpson when he won the World Championship. He has served on the BCF Racing Committee and as a GB and Centre of Excellence Team Manager. In 1983 he formed the Surrey Cycle Racing League. He has had many posts on the Paragon Committee including Runs Secretary, Road Race Secretary and now General Secretary. Alan started his racing career in the same event as Keith – the Kentish Wheelers Novices of 1956. He was moderately successful but has always been a member of the Paragon and as served on the Committee for many years and in many posts including Treasurer and Time Trials secretary. The VTTA (Surrey/Sussex) Group published their list of Records and the names of Harry Featherstone and Jack Platts are on many pages.

Parler d'une absence : la réception médiatique de la participation au Tour de France par les coureurs britanniques Hugh Dauncey and Geoff Hare (University of Newcastle upon Tyne) 1) La participation des Britanniques au Tour D'abord passons en revue le palmarès britannique au Tour de France. Malgré le succès dans cetaines courses d'un coureur comme Mills vers la fin du 19e siècle, les sportifs britanniques ont boudé le Tour jusqu'en 1937, année où deux Britanniques, dont le champion anglais Charley Holland, ont pris le départ, mais ne l'ont pas terminé. Ensuite il a fallu attendre 1955 avec l'arrivée d'une équipe britannique, largement sponsorisée par la marque de cycles Hercules. Son leader, un indépendant, Brian Robinson, a même décroché un classement en terminant 29e. Sur les 10 autres membres de l'équipe, il n'y a qu'un seul autre rescapé de la voiture balai, la lanterne rouge le très détendu Hoar, qui va être très applaudi à Paris. 1961 est la seule autre occasion où une équipe britannique traverse le Channel. Robinson courant donc plus ou moins seul se distingue dans ses 7 participations en gagnant deux étapes et en terminant 14e en 1956. Ainsi il a ouvert la voie à d'autres Simpson ou Hoban. Mais dans le demi-siècle de participation britannique nous constatons une relative abstinence et une maigre moisson. THE FRENCH CONNECTION Houghton CC and Le Tour …………..the missing links………………and more(useless information). In this historic year of the 2014 TdF Grand Depart taking place right here in the North of England, The Tootler has collected together a few interesting facts associating our great club with the worlds greatest bike race and some of the heroic riders who make the connection; roughly, possibly.Admittedly they are loose connections but there are worse things than being loosely connected so taking the advice of Ernest Hemingway to “write drunk, edit sober”, in this late night conceived and rambling compilation Tootler will attempt to connect Houghton CC, the late great Chis, the Vaux Grand Prix road race and the Tour de France. Firstly some relevant background information. For the benefit of recent members (and those under sixty five) the great Chis was a Houghton grammar school boy called Peter Chisman who joined the club in 1954 and who, apart from a wonderful career as an amateur and a professional also inspired hundreds of kids to take up bike racing. In the north east, at least in bike racing terms, the ninteen sixties and seventies were the belle epoque, the beautiful era, a golden time. Friday night at the clubrooms would be packed. There was a separate time trial and road racing notice board. The time trialling notices, race details and start times would be displayed on the RTTC notice board; and the BCF notice board would detail all road races, entrants, times, meeting points etc for those members racing on the road that weekend.
