    Speaking of Mysteries: Atonement in Teenage Fantasy Books. by Anne van Gend A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2015 2 Abstract The question of how we can speak of a transcendent God and God’s relationship with creation has been pondered for millennia. Today particular difficulties arise when communicating Christian atonement theories to a generation for whom the world of the Bible is increasingly foreign, and in a time when theologians and philosophers are questioning both the violence of some atonement theories and the existence of “superior transcendence.” This study explores the presence of biblical motifs in the stories of atonement in young adult fantasy works. It suggests that the use of these motifs to make sense of atonement within fantasy worlds may assist readers to make sense of the same motifs when they are used to portray the Christian story of atonement. The investigation begins by discussing the place of imagination, reason and transcendence in religious language and argues for the centrality of metaphor and myth in religious expression. It suggests that young people today still seek intermediaries—“priests and prophets”—between themselves and the unknown, but they now find them in the fantasy authors who continue to use imaginative language to communicate transcendence. A central trope in contemporary fantasy fiction is that of a death that saves the world. Contrary to the expectations raised by René Girard’s work, these are not the violent deaths of a helpless scapegoat.

    Reflected Shadows: Folklore and the Gothic ABSTRACTS Dr Gail-Nina Anderson (Independent Scholar) [email protected] Dracula’s Cape: Visual Synecdoche and the Culture of Costume. In 1939 Robert Bloch wrote a story called ‘The Cloak’ which took to its extreme a fashion statement already well established in popular culture – vampires wear cloaks. This illustrated paper explores the development of this motif, which, far from having roots in the original vampire lore of Eastern Europe, demonstrates a complex combination of assumptions about vampires that has been created and fed by the fictional representations in literature and film.While the motif relates most immediately to perceptions of class, demonic identity and the supernatural, it also functions within the pattern of nostalgic reference that defines the vampire in modern folklore and popular culture. The cloak belongs to that Gothic hot-spot, the 1890s, but also to Bela Lugosi, to modern Goth culture and to that contemporary paradigm of ready-fit monsters, the Halloween costume shop, taking it, and its vampiric associations, from aristocratic attire to disposable disguise. Biography: Dr Gail-Nina Anderson is a freelance lecturer who runs daytime courses aimed at enquiring adult audiences and delivers a programme of public talks for Newcastle’s Literary and Philosophical Library. Reed Department of English Whereas non-Native American fictional fearsome figures tend to produce anxiety from their resistance to categorization, their unpredictable movement, and their Otherness, many contemporary Native American writers re-imagine fearsome figures and monstrous systems as modeled after, and emergent from settler-colonial transgressions against Indigenous values and relationships: these behaviors spread to tribal people/s through incorporation or assimilation into the “body” of the fearsome figure. Such violations can be represented by, and better understood, through an exploration of the behavioral traits of the Algonquian figure of the 2 Windigo, or wétiko, even when the text in question would not be classified as horror. In the Indigenous works of fiction that this dissertation explores, villainy is depicted as behavior that destroys balance, and disrupts the ability for life to reproduce itself without human mediation or technological intervention.     Rogers 1 Adilene Rogers English 112B Dr.Warner 5/6/2014 Unit of Study: The Gothic Archetypes in Dracula and Young Adult Vampire Novels Rationale: Gothic literature and Gothic archetypes have become a major part of pop culture, specifically, when it comes to young adult literature. Vampire novels are in every bookstore and are often in the best sellers list, yet they are still not considered works of value when it comes to literature. I want to show that young adults can learn valuable things from reading these types of novels and to show how Gothic archetypes can be taught using vampire novels along with other Gothic texts. There are several types of supernatural romances but I chose vampire novels because the Gothic canonical work that I will be using is Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I plan on using this unit of study to teach Gothic Archetypes and also help students see the different elements that make up Gothic literature. The archetypes that will be covered are the plot archetypes, setting archetypes and character archetypes. I have chosen several types of books all ranging from having strong classical Gothic archetypes to some that have Gothic aspects, but lack the full archetypal spectrum of characters. I have also included several ways to engage students in the unit of study by including media, worksheets and discussion topics. Before the Unit: Before launching into the unit, I would begin by explaining what exactly Gothic literature is and what elements make up the Gothic story. Even though the main focus of this unit of story is the Gothic archetypes, it is still important that students know the fundamentals of the Gothic story.
