Did anyone make a resolution to practice daily? Is anyone practicing daily? If you are, be sure to share with the rest of us the method to your madness (I need some help!) Our January meeting, exchanging cards, was lots of fun and I believe everyone enjoyed sharing hints and tips with everyone else. The cards were gorgeous and I think interesting for our guests to understand our thought processes. Thank you to everyone who participated, and all those who were at the meeting. Our February meeting will be a “hands on” activity that is very simple but has impressive results. Leslie Wade will lead us in monoline letters with color added. Everyone who attends will take home something to show for the evening and boatloads of inspiration. Continue reading the Calligram for supplies to bring and samples of what we will do. We are planning an “in house,” one-day workshop in April on bookbinding. Look through the Calligram for more information, as this plans to be a fun opportunity to learn something new or review what you already know. As always, if you have worked on anything, whether completed or not, bring it to the meeting to share with everyone. I know I always enjoy looking at original artwork. In this workshop we shall be working on numerous exercises, using letters that produce a wide range of tones and textures, where absolute legibility is somewhat sacrificed for visual interest, and where logic is replaced with invention and play. Whilst using non-traditional and traditional tools, we shall primarily be using the Folded Ruling Pen, a tool that openly encourages a more adventurous (and less precious) approach. Beginning with some simple and fundamental strokes, we shall carefully build up alphabets that have a healthy disregard for the 'safe and pretty' for ones that carry a certain 'rebel' demeanor. With the use of colour (gouache and watercolor), we will be combining and balancing our new-found skills of tonal and textural excitement with our conventional and 'safe' pen and pencil work, to create a perfect foil and partner in our finished pieces. Throughout, there will be many demonstrations, short talks and explanations, including the making of a Folded Ruling Pen. A ruling pen will be made for each student should they wish. Then, by changing this rhythm (and other factors) we will achieve a wide range of 'flavours' in a simple and logical manner, thus relying on a 'method of study' and not the hollow strategy of hope! Variations of italic open to us to work on during our time together will be the Formal and sale to the dynamic and edgy to the elegant and spacious to the modern poly-rhythmic and rebel using the larger nibs and/or a Folded Ruling Pen." A feature of the workshop will be the production of a project as an 'aid memoir' of the workshop and our time together.
