Traditional medicine properties: Crocodile meat improves asthma, warms the body to fight disease, and pangolin soup increases lifespan.

Human/ wildlife conflict: The monkeys would come in large groups of up to 20 and wreak havoc with the fruits. Once the fruits are bruised or smashed, they are no longer saleable.

Who hunts?

People begin hunting from the age of 10–12 years and most continue hunting while their health permits

Indiscriminate harvest

Methods include: Number of animals hunted/eaten based on: catapults (for birds and squirrels) frequency of hunting traps on the village farms remoteness of village bows and arrows awareness of law spears use of guns metal noose use of traps pitfall box log-fall guns and Viet Nam “The opportunities provided by newly mobile domestic tourists have been fully exploited by the locals and the creation and marketing of expensive 'traditional specialities' by savvy entrepreneurs has contributed to the availability of wildmeat around popular tourist destinations.”

Who consumes?

Consumed mostly by successful, high-income, high-status males of all ages and educational levels

Motivations

Rare and precious: Expensive: demonstrates wealth and used to show respect status communicate prestige fashionable obtain social leverage luxurious demonstrate competence negotiating deals and initiating new business relations

Farmed vs Wild

The increase in farmed wild meat seems to encourage status consumers to place greater emphasis on wildness in order to communicate prestige Common themes

Wild meat is considered healthier than farmed or domestic meat

Targeted techniques (gun, crossbow) increase yield of specific species

Demand drives supply
