(Aug. 4, 2018) — Former Washington Redskins General Manager Bobby Beathard was enshrined in Canton, Ohio at the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2018. Beathard, the architect behind some of the most legendary teams in Redskins lore, was presented by former Washington Redskins head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs. Beathard’s illustrious career as an NFL executive included 11 sea- sons as General Manager of the Redskins from 1978-88. After taking the job on Feb. 24, 1978, Beathard guided the organization to three Su- per Bowl appearances, including victories in Super Bowls XVII and XXII. Many of the players he acquired remained on the roster for the team’s Super Bowl XXVI victory as well. In Beathard’s 11 seasons as General Manager, the Redskins av- eraged 9.5 wins a year. The team posted a regular season winning percentage of .625 (105-63) in that time frame, best in the NFC and second-best in the NFL. No team in that time frame posted a better postseason winning percentage than the Redskins, who went 11-3 in postseason play in his tenure for a winning percentage of .786. Draft classes during Beathard's tenure featured three members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including wide receiver Art Monk (1980, Bobby Beathard (L) and Joe Gibbs (R) unveil Beathard's Pro Football Hall of Fame No. 18 overall), guard Russ Grimm (1981, No. 69) and cornerback Dar- bust during the enshrinement ceremony in Canton, Ohio. rell Green (1983, No. 28). - photo courtesy of the Pro Football Hall of Fame The classes also featured four additional members of the Redskins Ring of Fame, including linebacker Monte Coleman (1979, No. 289), de- fensive end Dexter Manley (1981, No. 119), defensive end Charles Mann (1983, No. 84) and quarterback Mark Rypien (1986, No. 146). Additionally, Beathard oversaw the college free agent additions of Redskins Ring of Famers Jeff Bostic and Joe Jacoby and supplement- ed the team with a number of former USFL stars, including quarter- back Doug Williams and wide receivers Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders. All of the players listed were led on the fi eld by Coach Gibbs, the former San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator whom Beathard hired prior to the 1981 season. Beathard began his career as a part-time scout for the American Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs in 1963. He earned an AFL cham- pionship ring with the organization in 1966 en route to the team’s berth in Super Bowl I. He would later serve as a scout for the Atlanta Falcons from 1968-71 and as Director of Player Personnel for the Miami Dol- phins from 1972-77 prior to joining the Redskins. He fi nished his ca- reer as General Manager of the San Diego Chargers, serving in that capacity from 1990-2000. In all, Beathard’s teams made seven Super Bowl appearances, including one by Kansas City (1966), two by Miami (1972-73), three by Washington (1982-83 and 1987) and one by San Diego (1994). Beathard was born in Zanesville, Ohio, on Jan. 24, 1937. He grew up in the Los Angeles area and attended El Segundo H.S. before play- ing quarterback at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, where he helped lead the 1957 and 1958 teams to consecutive 9-1 records. NFL WINNING PERCENTAGES (1978-88) Under Beathard's guidance from 1978-88, the Redskins com- piled a 105-63 regular season record (.625, No. 2 in the NFL) and an 11-3 postseason record (.786, No. 1) for a combined winning per- centage of .637, the highest mark in the NFL in that timeframe. Former Hokie Michael Vick, the first player picked in the 2001 NFL Draft, is scheduled to take over the starting quarterback duties for the Atlanta Falcons in 2002. Special Teams are an integral part of Hokie football and one of the units is called “Pride and Joy.” These NFL players are also a source of pride and joy due to their commitment to Virginia Tech on and off the field. Virginia Tech has recently constructed a display in the Hall of Legends in the Merryman Athletic Center to honor such former players. John Engelberger was a dominating defensive end who went from walk-on to four-year starter at Tech, to second-round NFL Draft pick, earning All-America honors and his college degree along the way. Waddy Harvey was a standout who started three seasons at defensive tackle and won the coveted Williams Award for leadership and character before joining the Buffalo Bills. Frank and Cheryl Beamer sponsored Harvey for recognition on the Pride and Joy display. Before starting an NFL career, Jim Pyne, a powerful center in the early 1990s, started 41 games and allowed just one sack in over 2,700 snaps on his way to becoming the Hokies’ first unanimous All-American. Michael Vick was an electrifying quarterback who made a lasting impact on college football while helping Virginia Tech to a national championship game and back-to-back 11-1 seasons before becoming the top NFL pick in 2001. Jim Pyne was the first player chosen overall in the NFL’s 1998 expansion draft. PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn PHILADELPHIA EAGLES Team History The Eagles have been a Philadelphia institution since their beginning in 1933 when a syndicate headed by the late Bert Bell and Lud Wray purchased the former Frankford Yellowjackets franchise for $2,500. In 1941, a unique swap took place between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh that saw the clubs trade home cities with Alexis Thompson becoming the Eagles owner. In 1943, the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh franchises combined for one season due to the manpower shortage created by World War II. The team was called both Phil-Pitt and the Steagles. Greasy Neale of the Eagles and Walt Kiesling of the Steelers were co-coaches and the team finished 5-4-1. Counting the 1943 season, Neale coached the Eagles for 10 seasons and he led them to their first significant successes in the NFL. Paced by such future Pro Football Hall of Fame members as running back Steve Van Buren, center-linebacker Alex Wojciechowicz, end Pete Pihos and beginning in 1949, center-linebacker Chuck Bednarik, the Eagles dominated the league for six seasons. They finished second in the NFL Eastern division in 1944, 1945 and 1946, won the division title in 1947 and then scored successive shutout victories in the 1948 and 1949 championship games. A rash of injuries ended Philadelphia’s era of domination and, by 1958, the Eagles had fallen to last place in their division. That year, however, saw the start of a rebuilding program by a new coach, Buck Shaw, and the addition of quarterback Norm Van Brocklin in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams.

  • Evaluating Talent Acquisition Via the NFL Draft
Evaluating Talent Acquisition Via the NFL Draft by Casey Barney Anthony Caravella Michael Cullen Gary Jackson Craig E. Wills WPI-CS-TR-13-01 March 2013 1 Executive Summary In this work we apply data analytics to the National Football League Draft enabling us to pose and seek answers to a number of interesting questions regarding the success of drafting players over the period 2000 through the most recent 2012 draft and league season. The analysis is based on measuring the cost of acquiring players through the draft and the success of these players once acquired. We employ two primary metrics for measuring the cost of drafted players. The first simply uses the round in which a player is taken while the second uses a table of draft pick values initially developed within the NFL in the early 1990s. We also employ two metrics for measuring the success of drafted players where the first assigns a value to each player’s performance for a season. The second was developed as part of this work and is based on a weighted score for games played, games started and recognition as a top player. Using these metrics, we examine many questions of interest. We first examine which teams have drafted the best using combinations of cost and success metrics for all 32 NFL teams. If we ignore costs then Green Bay is the team that has drafted the best players since 2000 with New England and San Francisco close behind. In contrast, Washington has acquired the least amount of talent via the draft.
