  • May 1, 2016, Lazy Bones Travelogue, Virgin Islands And
May 1, 2016 Lazy Bones Update: British Virgin Islands (BVI’s), U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico Our last update left off with us setting sail on March 14th from St Maarten, the most northerly of the Leeward Islands, to the British Virgin Islands (BVI’s). Our destination was the island of Virgin Gorda, 84 miles northwest. We left St. Maarten at 5:30 AM and experienced rain squalls most of the day, but we averaged over eight knots and even hit 10.2 knots! We arrived at Virgin Gorda North Sound at 3:30 PM and anchored off Prickly Pear Island. The next morning we took the dinghy across the sound to Gun Creek and cleared in with customs. We came back to Lazy Bones and motor-sailed over to the Bitter End Yacht Club (BEYC), anchored outside the mooring field, and went ashore for lunch. The BEYC is a unique nautical resort that caters to all yachtsmen. They have a small marina, several restaurants, friendly bars, a small grocery store, bungalows, Wi-Fi, a pool, and much more. It’s a great place to hang out, have some drinks, and enjoy a nice meal. At 4:30 we took the dinghy over to Saba Rock for happy hour. This tiny island was owned by Bert Kilbride, a big enthusiast for SCUBA diving, back in the fifties. In the sixties Bert opened the Pirates Pub, set up a few moorings, and Saba Rock became the local sailors’ hangout. In 1997, he sold out to a developer who built an amazing resort on this tiny piece of rock.

  • Spinnakers and Poles/Bowsprits Explained
SPINNAKERS AND POLES/BOWSPRITS EXPLAINED The RORC Rating Office is sometimes asked whether symmetric and asymmetric spinnakers are rated differently, and whether there is a rating increase if you use both types. The question is often prompted by the IRC application form asking questions about the spinnakers of each type carried aboard, rather than just the largest spinnaker area (SPA) and total number of spinnakers. There are two aspects of downwind sail rating: the sail itself and the type of pole (if any) it is set on - as explained below. Text in italics is taken from the IRC 2018 Rule text. SPINNAKERS For the calculation of your rating, IRC considers the largest spinnaker area (SPA) and the total number of spinnakers carried. 21.6 Spinnakers 21.6.1 Boats carrying more than three spinnakers in total on board while racing will incur an increase in rating. 21.6.2 Spinnaker area (SPA) shall be calculated from: SPA = ((SLU + SLE)/2) * ((SFL + (4 * SHW))/5) * 0.83 SLU, SLE, SFL and SHW of the largest area spinnaker on board shall be declared. The calculated area of this spinnaker will be shown on a boat’s certificate as the maximum permitted SPA. 8.10.1 Values stated on certificates for LH, Hull Beam, Bulb Weight, Draft, x, P, E, J, FL, MUW, MTW, MHW, HLUmax, HSA, PY, EY, LLY, LPY, Cutter Rig HLUmax, SPA, STL are maximum values. Are symmetric or asymmetric spinnakers rated differently? Not directly, but see the section on pole type below. Is there a rating increase if I carry both symmetric and asymmetric spinnakers? Not directly, but see the section on pole type below.

  • Archelon: on Board the 37 Metre Oyster Sailing Yacht
8 images Archelon: On Board the 37 Metre Oyster Sailing Yacht 2020-07-01 BY MATTHEW SHEAHAN Step on board Archelon, the new 37 metre Oyster sailing yacht designed by Humphreys Yacht Design Ltd It is not every day that you run a superyacht down a shingle beach alongside windsurfers, kayaks and paddleboards. Stopping the traffic and closing the busy main road that runs along the Lee-on-Solent shoreline also drew plenty of attention as the 37.45-metre hull and deck were rolled on to the beach before being craned on to a waiting barge. Named after the extinct genus of turtle, Archelon is a rare beast indeed. Moving the first Oyster 1225, Archelon, from her moulding facility at HMS Daedalus to Oyster’s Southampton yard at Saxon Wharf on the south coast of the UK was a major exercise that had been meticulously planned. The level of detail that went into the operation mirrors the careful thinking that has underwritten every aspect of the 1225’s design. When Richard Hadida bought Oyster Yachts in 2018 and a new era for the yard began, the yacht was already in progress – at the vanguard of a new breed of Oyster and one of few designs that he would keep on. “The first 1225 was probably halfway through her build in Southampton and we completed it with Pendennis,” he says. “Oyster built all the bespoke cabinetry and interior joinery and under our design and guidance Pendennis fitted it.” The owner’s cabin aft benefits from plenty of light that streams in through the seascape windows in the hull and portlights in the deck.

Ethnographic Overview and Assessment of the San Juan National Historic Site: Final Report Photo courtesy of Dr. Vivianna De Jesús-Monge Submitted by Dr. Jorge Duany Director, Cuban Research Institute Florida International University To the National Park Service Southeast Region – Cultural Resources Division Atlanta, Georgia February 25, 2015 Table of Contents Executive Summary 2 Introduction 4 Methodology 9 Key Findings 12 Recommendations 20 References Cited 22 Report Index 29 Appendix 33 Table 39 1 Executive Summary • The purpose of this study was to document the ongoing relationships between associated communities and the resources of the San Juan National Historic Site (SJNHS) in Puerto Rico. The study sought to identify groups with both traditional and contemporary ties to the park. • The study focused on the urban core containing the SJNHS and its surrounding communities of La Perla, La Puntilla, La Marina, and other neighborhoods of Old San Juan and Puerta de Tierra. • The research team reviewed, summarized, and evaluated existing information derived from published and unpublished sources, including historic maps, documents, and photographs. • Ethnographic methods were also employed to collect and document data through interviews, consultation, and site visits. • Following National Park Service (NPS) guidelines, ethnographic resources in and adjacent to the park were identified and documented. • Key findings described in this report include the following: . We found little archaeological evidence of the utilization of the site by the indigenous people of Puerto Rico before the Spanish conquest. Most of the available documentation is dated to the 18th and 19th centuries. Several working-class communities have traditionally been affiliated with the area now occupied by the SJNHS.

  • Sailing Course Materials Overview
SAILING COURSE MATERIALS OVERVIEW INTRODUCTION The NCSC has an unusual ownership arrangement -- almost unique in the USA. You sail a boat jointly owned by all members of the club. The club thus has an interest in how you sail. We don't want you to crack up our boats. The club is also concerned about your safety. We have a good reputation as competent, safe sailors. We don't want you to spoil that record. Before we started this training course we had many incidents. Some examples: Ran aground in New Jersey. Stuck in the mud. Another grounding; broke the tiller. Two boats collided under the bridge. One demasted. Boats often stalled in foul current, and had to be towed in. Since we started the course the number of incidents has been significantly reduced. SAILING COURSE ARRANGEMENT This is only an elementary course in sailing. There is much to learn. We give you enough so that you can sail safely near New Castle. Sailing instruction is also provided during the sailing season on Saturdays and Sundays without appointment and in the week by appointment. This instruction is done by skippers who have agreed to be available at these times to instruct any unkeyed member who desires instruction. CHECK-OUT PROCEDURE When you "check-out" we give you a key to the sail house, and you are then free to sail at any time. No reservation is needed. But you must know how to sail before you get that key. We start with a written examination, open book, that you take at home.

160’ SAILING TRIMARAN The BLUE COAST 160’ Sailing Trimaran is the most extreme fusion of architecture, design, comfort, performance, economy and technology ever created in a luxury sailing yacht. It challenges the forces of nature and the rules of engineering to race across the ocean without using a drop of oil and can cruise the most exclusive harbours powered only by renewable energy. Ultra in this context means a 48 meters carbon-fibre trimaran designed and developed by the world’s leading naval architect combined with technology from Formula 1 motor racing to create a unique yacht with folding multihulls. Completely automated to ensure ease of operation and provide the ultimate levels of comfort, BCY 160’ ST harnesses the luxury and convenience of a motor yacht with the excitement and speed of a multihulls.
