He will talk to us about what SCDC is doing to provide services in these times of austerity and stringency. He will also give us his perspective on the Government’s localism agenda and what it can mean for Aldeburgh. He will also be happy to answer all your questions. Should be an interesting evening! Friday 29 November - 6:30pm CHURCH HALL THE PHONE CALL – the realities of a writer’s life. John Canter Jon Canter is a writer who has lived in Aldeburgh for 20 years with the painter Helen Napper and their daughter Nancy. After studying law at Cambridge, where he was President of Footlights, he graduated to writing stand-up comedy with Lenny Henry, script editing for Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, and writing screenplays and novels. His new book, written with John Lloyd “Afterliff, the New Dictionary of Things There Should Be Words For” has just been published and he is currently writing a book based on the BBC series Rev with Tom Hollander. Jon will be talking about the writing process and its many amusing and frustrating moments. Friday 31 January – 6:30pm COMMUNITY CENTRE The role of the BBC’s Political Correspondent – Nick Robinson Nick Robinson will talk about his experiences as a political correspondent at the BBC and earlier at ITN. He will also talk about how he came to hold these positions and his study of the changing role of the political correspondent based on his book Live from Downing Street which traces the role of the political correspondent from the time when Parliament refused to permit anyone to take notes of what was said in Parliament. [His talks in Orford on this theme have proved hugely popular. Places will be strictly - first come first served.] Friday 28 February – 6:30pm CHURCH HALL In the steps of Captain Scott – Jake Wilson After training as a classical violinist and piano player, Jake went to India to study the sitar. Jake is a folk-rock guitarist, and songwriter in the Richard Thompson mould. He has also worked for the BBC and recently spent a lot of time research the life of Roald Dahl. On 3rd March 2013 Jake reached Cape Evans in Antarctica and fulfilled his dream of performing songs he had written in the actual hut where Captain Scott and his team lived and worked before setting out for the South Pole. Jake will talk about his experiences in Antarctica and perform some of his songs in the Church Hall and hopefully afterwards at a party for young and the not so young at a venue in Aldeburgh.
