Term 1 Principal’s report by Lynita Taylor

Term one is sailing by very quickly with only two weeks left after this week, and Easter just around the corner. We are delighted that our students have made such a positive start to 2016. I would like to encourage all students to make sure they remain focused and ensure all tasks are submitted on time for assessment, ready for staff to complete Interim Reports.

I hope you enjoy reading about the fantastic sporting achievements of our students on Compass. In particular, congratulations to our swimming team who performed so well at the interschool swimming carnival and to our Age Champions. Congratulations to all students who have made it through to the next round, for their outstanding achievements against very strong competition. We hope you achieve your personal best regardless of where you are placed.

Thank you to Mr Cameron Dole for organising his team of helpers, and for supporting our students on the day.

Next week we will enjoy another wonderful day together at our Annual Mount Clear Athletics Carnival. I’d like to invite parents to join us on this day, even if only for a short time it would be great to see you there. Our sports carnivals are very special community events for us and it is always great to see the colourful mix of highly competitive focussed athletes, combined with the many students who put their hand up for events, just for the fun of joining in on the team spirit to gain points for their team……each role of equal importance! The winning team usually gets there through having higher number of competitors on the day volunteering to fill each and every event.

A reminder to all students that ‘COMMITMENT’ is of one of our very important College values. So if you sign your name up for an event for Athletics Day, this is an opportunity to demonstrate this value. Make sure you turn up on the day and complete the event, so as not to let your team down. We had many disappointed students return from the interschool Swimming Sports feeling that Mount Clear College would have won on the day, if it had not been for the many students who did not bother to turn up and meet their commitment to the team. Some students have sadly adopted the opinion as they have grown up, that if they don’t think they will win the event, they pull out. With parents help we are trying to turn this attitude around, asking students to adopt a ‘growth’ mindset where we all push ourselves to support our growth and development without focussing on whether we win or lose.

Hopefully your child has been sharing with you the discussions and work they have started in their Mentor teams about the Resilience Project. This will be rolled out at different stages for each year level. The aim of this program is to enhance the resilience and wellbeing of our students. We believe that the resilience of a child cannot be left to chance, nor dependant on the luck of having significant adults in their world to support their development in this area. As Educators we now know that there are a set of skills that can be taught and this is now a significant component of our Mentor program. We are very excited to have been the first school in Australia to sign up at the start of 2016, to deliver this specific curriculum to our students. If you have any queries about this program please do not hesitate to contact Student Services Leader, Fionna Wooller. PrinciPal’s rePort by Lynita TaylorContinued page 2

All students and teachers have expressed that they had a good time at school and in . Mount Clear College has prepared a program for Korean students to experience Australian school and life, such as visit- ing the Town Hall, Sovereign Hill and Wildlife Park; attending buddy class and some special classes, like English, Wood- work, Earth Ed Science. Sport coordinator Mr Cameron Dole organized a soccer competition between Mount Clear Col- lege soccer and Korean students. Korean students demonstrated a high level of skill during the match. HOUSE UPDATE

Mount Clear House Update

The Athletic Sports are on Thursday 17th March and this is also the next major House event. All students have had the opportunity to sign up to individual events in House meetings. If students have not yet signed up to any events they should see Mr Dole in the Year 11 and 12 staff room.

For the Athletics Day all students should dress up in their House colours, there will be a “Best Dressed” competition that all Houses can enter students into.

There have been a trickle of sports team lists com- ing through to Mr Clark so that House Points can be allocated. It has been pleasing to see a number of Positive Behavior points increasing the numbers.

It would be great to get some more Academic points awarded by staff, so students should contin- ue to aim high in their work efforts.

Remember that students doing great things around MCC can earn their House points (which is worth a free BBQ at the end of the year for the winning House!)
