P.O. BOX 98 • 3027 PEARL ST. • OLDENBURG, IN 47036 Fr. Carl’s Thoughts & Reflections Fourth Sunday of Lent - March 22, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted all of our lives in one way or another. I hesitate to give more recommendations or instructions, for fear that the situation may change before you see these thoughts and reflections. At this point on March 17, the Archbishop has dispensed us from the obligation of Sunday Mass, and all Sunday and weekday Masses have been suspended until further notice. Our religious education programs are suspended for as long as the schools are closed. Try not to touch your face, stay home if you are sick, practice frequent handwashing, cough into a tissue or your sleeve, and maintain a healthy distance from others. The Archbishop did ask that we cancel any funeral lunch- eons. We do not have the capacity to live-stream our services, but are looking into what would be required to do so. Televised Masses are available on EWTN, and are live-streamed at archindy.org, and catholiccincinnati.org. Our March 24 parish Penance Service is also canceled. Our offices continue to be open. Our bulletins and other information are available on our website and facebook. We still have bills to pay, so we are accepting your Sunday offerings by mail, or you can drop them off at the office, or use the mail slot in our front door. Private prayer, Rosary, and Stations of the Cross are highly recommended, plus private reading and meditating on the Scriptures for weekend Masses. Our Scriptures this week emphasize God’s power working through his people. Samuel anoints as king, after considering all the other sons of , some of whom appeared very qualified. St. Paul reminds the Ephesians that they were once in darkness, but are now children of the light because of their faith in Jesus. In St. John’s lengthy Gospel, Jesus heals the blind man on the Sabbath, using mud and the water of the , much to the consternation of the Pharisees. Jesus compliments the man for his faith and proclaims, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.” Do we really see, or are we also blind, and just think we see? Please try to see this Lent as a time of special penance and vigilance, following the best practices to keep safe and healthy. We are all called to learn from this experience, and to look within ourselves at our priorities and values, and hopefully align them with the example of Jesus. Try to reach out and be aware of the needs of others, and our call to be generous in helping particularly the poor and elderly among us. May God’s grace strengthen us during these trying times. Visits to hospitals and nursing homes are restricted, but keep in touch with loved ones by phone or email, especially the elderly and those living alone. Have a Blessed & Healthy Fourth Week of Lent.
