Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years. -

Andrew Strong ist den meisten mit seiner „Mustang-Sally“-Röhre im Ohr. Er war der Sänger der legendären wie kurzlebigen Commitments, bekannt aus dem gleichnamigen, vielfach ausgezeichneten Alan-Parker-Film über eine Band, die den schwärzesten Sound von ganz Dublin spielte. Strong war erst 18, als er den Sänger Deco verkörperte. Der Commitments-Soundtrack wurde danach zwölf Millionen Mal verkauft, Strong tourte mit Größen wie Elton John, den Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Prince, Bryan Adams, Ray Charles, Deep Purple und Meat Loaf. Eine Rolle im großen Musikzirkus wollte man auch Andreas Kümmert nach seinem „The Voice“-Sieg überstülpen. Aber der eigensinnige Franke verweigerte sich. Eine gute Entscheidung, jetzt darf er den ehrlichen Erfolg genießen. Sein letztes Album wurde mit Gold ausgezeichnet, seine musikalischen Wurzeln liegen immer noch im Blues und Rock’n’Roll der 1960er und 1970er. Kümmert trat schon 2015 bei den Bluestagen, gerade nach seiner Absage zum ESC. Der Run war groß, auch jetzt sollte man sich mit dem Kartenkauf beeilen. VIOLENT FEMMES AND THE TASMANIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA World Premiere Monday 22 & Tuesday 23 January Due to popular demand Mona Foma today announced an extra show for the world premiere of the Violent Femmes performing with the TSO. For two nights only, the Violent Femmes will take their acoustic punk-rock and work with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra to reimagine it as a full orchestra experience. Conducted by Hamish McKeich they’ll perform a long list of cult classics such as Add It Up, Blister In The Sun, Kiss Off, Gone Daddy Gone, American Song and Gimme The Car at The Federation Concert Hall on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 January. “Most rock bands would blow off an orchestra with the amplifiers, but for these two shows we’re prepared to back off on the volume and actually play almost at the same volume as the orchestra musicians and create a more unified approach, “ said Brian Ritchie. The Violent Femmes were formed in 1981 as an acoustic band playing on the streets of Milwaukee. Their main influences at that time were Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps and The Velvet Underground. Enduring a couple of hiatuses throughout their 36-plus year career, the band — original members Gordon Gano and Brian Ritchie, along with drummer John Sparrow have been performing steadily since reuniting again in 2013. The TSO’s performance with the Violent Femmes represents another innovative collaboration for the orchestra, which in 2017 alone has seen sold out concerts with vocal star Kate Miller-Heidke, a Dark MOFO collaboration with Norwegian metal band Ulver, an original show with comedy trio Tripod and a sold out concert with ARIA award-winning and multi-platinum artist Megan Washington.
