The total number of people aged 60 and older grew from 200 million in 1950 to 400 million in 1982. Their number is expected to increase to 600 million in the year 2001 when 70 per cent of them will live in developing countries. This demographic revolution has major consequences on the way human settlements are designed, managed and used. The United Nations and its agencies have undertaken many activities that recognize this reality. The General Assembly adopted the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons and proclaimed 1981 the International Year of Disabled Persons. In 1982, 124 Member States adopted the International Plan of Action on Aging at the World Assembly on Aging. These two landmark events launched a variety of activities and studies during the United Nations Decade of Elderly and Disabled Persons. The United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat) launched the decade with two important documents. Designing with Care - a Guide to Adaptation of the Built Environment for Disabled Persons was published as the result of cooperation between the United Nations, UNCHS (Habitat) and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). This guide pointed out that implementation of suggested design guidelines and related policies and programmes would have to be undertaken by authorities, taking into consideration the economic, social and climatic conditions of the human settlement concerned. -

PRESERVING LGBTQ HISTORY The chapters in this section provide a history of archival and architectural preservation of LGBTQ history in the United States. An archeological context for LGBTQ sites looks forward, providing a new avenue for preservation and interpretation. This LGBTQ history may remain hidden just under the ground surface, even when buildings and structures have been demolished. THE PRESERVATION05 OF LGBTQ HERITAGE Gail Dubrow Introduction The LGBTQ Theme Study released by the National Park Service in October 2016 is the fruit of three decades of effort by activists and their allies to make historic preservation a more equitable and inclusive sphere of activity. The LGBTQ movement for civil rights has given rise to related activity in the cultural sphere aimed at recovering the long history of same- sex relationships, understanding the social construction of gender and sexual norms, and documenting the rise of movements for LGBTQ rights in American history. -

The thesis explores 'myth-revision' in selected works of Fantasy fiction. Myth- revision is defined as the retelling of traditional legends, folk-tales and other familiar stories in such as way as to change the story's implied ideology. (For example, Angela Carter's 'The Company of Wolves' revises 'Red Riding Hood' into a feminist tale of female sexuality and empowerment.) Myth-revision, the thesis argues, has become a significant trend in Fantasy fiction in the last three decades, and is notable in the works of Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman and Philip Pullman. -

Explorations in Family Nursing
Explorations in Family Nursing The continuing shift in health care provision from hospital into the community places an increasing burden on the family as the primary source of care. Explorations in Family Nursing looks at how nurses can adopt a more collaborative approach to working with families both to facilitate their task as carers and to promote the health and well-being of the whole family. The first part of the book explores the theoretical underpinnings of family nursing, drawing insights from family therapy and systems theory and looks for a working definition of the family which is inclusive of the varied family forms encountered in contemporary society. The book goes on to establish the principles of family nursing explaining the process of making assessments, planning interventions and evaluating progress. Chapters on caring for chronically and terminally ill children, patients in intensive care, adolescents’ problems, frail elderly people and children with learning disabilities demonstrate the scope for applying family nursing strategies widely both in the community and in hospital. The book concludes with an evaluation of the opportunties, limitations and challenges which family nursing presents for nurses in the 1990s. Explorations in Family Nursing is of interest to practitioners at specialist and advanced levels and to students from Diploma to postgraduate degree programmes. Challenging nurses to adopt a more collaborative approach to care, this book makes a timely and relevant contribution to the development of nursing practice.
