The thesis explores 'myth-revision' in selected works of Fantasy fiction. Myth- revision is defined as the retelling of traditional legends, folk-tales and other familiar stories in such as way as to change the story's implied ideology. (For example, Angela Carter's 'The Company of Wolves' revises 'Red Riding Hood' into a feminist tale of female sexuality and empowerment.) Myth-revision, the thesis argues, has become a significant trend in Fantasy fiction in the last three decades, and is notable in the works of Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman and Philip Pullman. -

Warlikowski's “Warsaw Cabaret”
Warlikowski’s “Warsaw Cabaret”: Transmissions from the End of the World The premiere performance of “Warsaw Cabaret” at Nowy Teatr. Krzysztof Warlikowski shows his sense of humour with a play that we thought would be a warning against the brutal new wave. The most famous scene in Bob Fosse’s “Cabaret” starring Liza Minelli? A boy crisply singing an innocent song as others gradually join in and transform it into a show of Nazi strength – “Tomorrow belongs to me.” In the Oscar-winning musical, a couple of decadent Anglo-Saxons watches the rise of Nazism from their vantage point inside night-time lounges and champagne-soaked soirees. Warlikowski’s latest play from Warsaw in 2013 transports us back to Berlin of the 1930s; to a revue cabaret. The spectacular venue is a haven for those yearning to lose themselves in intensity and not think about the threat approaching to the tune of a military march. Could this be a warning against the resurgence of totalitarianism and the end of liberal democracy? The official premiere of “Warsaw Cabaret” is slated for 3 July at the Open’er Music Festival in Gdynia. Next, the show will head to Avignon, to Europe’s foremost theatre festival. But lucky viewers got a chance to see the play during a pre-premiere performance at the new home of Nowy Teatr – a former garbage truck garage in Mokotów transformed into a fascinatingly-raw performance space. Nazism and golden confetti The original 26 May premiere was pushed back because of an injury suffered by actress Magdalena Cielecka, who plays Sally Bowles, a girl who comes to Berlin in search of showbiz success. -

In a rather conventional sense, great performing is often associated with a sense of interiority, becoming your character, identifying with your role. In that sense, a great performer could become anyone else simply by looking deep within herself. Of course, there’s a long history of performance practices that reject this model. Yet whether it is a matter of embracing or rejecting what is, so to speak, on the inside, there is an overarching belief that great performers are uniquely adept at locating themselves and using that self to build a world around them. It is no surprise then that today we are all expected to be great performers. Our lives are filled the endless capacity to shed one skin for another, to produce multiple cyber-personalities on a whim. We are hyperaware that our outsides are malleable and performative—and that our insides might be an endless resource for reinventing and rethinking ourselves (not to mention the world around us). So perhaps it’s almost too obvious to say that Jibz When I was a youth, say, about 8, I played a game in the Cameron, the mastermind behind Dynasty Handbag, is an incredible woods with my friend Ocean where we pretended to be hookers. -
Ano-Vesical Reflex: Role in Inducing Micturition in Paraplegic Patients
Paraplegia 32 (1994) 104-107 © 1994 International Medical Society of Paraplegia Ano-vesical reflex: role in inducing micturition in paraplegic patients A Shafik MD Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery and Research, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt. The reflex relationship between the anal canal and the urinary bladder was investigated in 14 normal volunteers and in seven patients with spinal cord injury of more than 2 years duration. The latter induced urination by dilating the anal canal with the finger. The vesical pressure was measured by a balloon-tipped catheter introduced into the urinary bladder which was filled with 100 ml saline. The anal canal was inflated with a balloon catheter filled with 2 ml air; inflation was increased in increments of 2 ml up to 10 ml. The vesical pressure in response to both slow and rapid anal distension was recorded. The external and internal anal sphincters were blocked separately and the test was repeated. Rapid anal inflation elevated the vesical pressure. The greater the anal inflation, the higher the vesical pressure. Slow anal distension induced insignificant vesical pressure changes (p > 0.05). Rapid anal distension with internal sphincter block induced insignificant vesical pressure changes (p > 0.05) while the vesical pressure showed a significant increase with external sphincter block. In paraplegic subjects, the vesical pressure increased on rapid anal distension with 6 ml air but did not further increase with greater distension. Vesical pressure increase was recorded after external sphincter block but there was an insignificant change after internal sphincter paralysis. The aforementioned results were reproducible. -

DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/044275ar Tapping into American “freakshow” and “sideshow” scholarship, this article explores the paradoxical discourse on intimacy and uniqueness which emerges See table of contents in Zumanity. In spite of its promise of spectacular sensuousness, Zumanity offers vain, joyless erotic gyrations. The assorted sexual acts and proclivities in the show fail to titillate in spite of the mistress of ceremony’s voluptuous whispers. To point out an erotic cabaret’s vacuity is to merely comment on Publisher(s) superficial consumer society through its Vegas metonymy. The Cirque du Soleil Centre de recherche en civilisation canadienne-française (CRCCF) has strayed away from circus with Zumanity where it instead flirts with an Société québécoise d’études théâtrales (SQET) American idea of the German cabaret of the twenties and early thirties. By giving free reign to theatre artists, the Cirque has once again challenged the assumptions and expectations of circus while renewing its aesthetics and ISSN creative talent. Zumanity’s discourse remains strangely metatheatrical (and 0827-0198 (print) meta-circus) in the sense that it insists on the Cirque’s ability to reveal its 1923-0893 (digital) attributes without prudishness. -
