Amorphis Is the Fourth and Last Band to Join Summer Chaos Festival Burgas 2015 Amorphis is the fourth and last band to join Summer Chaos Festival Burgas 2015 Tuesday, 17 March 2015 Amorphis is the last foreign band to join Summer Chaos Festival Burgas, which will be held on the 16th of June on "Lazur" stadium. The Scandinavians will join the bands Godsmack, Papa Roach and Biohazard, to form one unique foursome, which will drive the audience to madness. The event is organized by M.E. Music, with the help of Municipality Burgas. In recent years Amorphis became one of the most popular bands on the Scandinavian heavy metal scene, and the fans and the critics define them as the brightest representatives of Finnish contemporary music. Thanks to their specific sound - brutally hard and melodic at the same time, the band became the face of Finnish metal around the world. The group is founded in 1990 from the drummer Jan Rechberger and guitarists Tomi Koivusaari and Esa Holopainen. Their first big success, which leads them out of Finland, happened in 1994, when one of the masterpieces of the 90s metal music comes out - "Tales From The Thousand Lakes". During their 25 year career, the band has produced 11 albums, sold millions of copies worldwide and has gone on tours on 5 continents. The audience will see Amorphis live in the line: Tomi Joutsen - vocal, Esa Holopainen - guitar, Tomi Koivusaari - guitar, Santeri Kallio - keyboard, Niclas Etelavouri - bass, and the founder of the group Jan Rechberger - drums. page 1 / 2 Tickets for the rock event can be purchased from the network TicketPro in the whole country. page 2 / 2 Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).

For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. Such stories are then transposed into new media, disseminating the artists‟ concept of Finnishness.

  • Exploring the Chinese Metal Scene in Contemporary Chinese Society (1996-2015)
"THE SCREAMING SUCCESSOR": EXPLORING THE CHINESE METAL SCENE IN CONTEMPORARY CHINESE SOCIETY (1996-2015) Yu Zheng A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2016 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2016 Yu Zheng All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This research project explores the characteristics and the trajectory of metal development in China and examines how various factors have influenced the localization of this music scene. I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics. And, this localized trajectory is influenced by the accessibility of metal resources, the rapid economic growth, urbanization, and the progress of modernization in China, and the overall development of cultural industry and international cultural communication. iv For Yisheng and our unborn baby! v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First of all, I would like to show my deepest gratitude to my advisor, Dr.

  • Identity, Cosmopolitanism and Education in Extreme Metal Bands: the Case of Finland

Music is an art that often defines the education and values of peo- ple. Extreme Metal is a controversial musical genre that at times, in some of its subgenres, has caused episodes of exceptional violence. Metalheads make up a cultural movement that is present on all conti- nents. Metal movements are difficult to dissolve in the magma of social acceptance: they create a consciousness of transnational solidarity, of response to waste and ostentation that destroys the planet, while claim- ing the place in which it is lived. Extreme Metal is not an artistic fashion, it is profoundly changing the mentality of many young people who reject the social organisation of the capitalist and Christian world and try to find alternatives for the future. In this article we ask how their convic- tions are formed and in what way the school’s teachings influence them. One of the ways of studying the phenomenon is by analysing the lyrics of the songs. Not all subgenres can be covered and three Melodic Death Metal bands from Finland have been chosen for study, especially in rela- tion to their feelings about nature and the cosmos. It is evident that their songs are often based on classical and popular poems learned at school, by the legacy left by the great Finnish poets, and even by the literary cre- ations of musicians for that school resonance.

Global Metal Music and Culture This book defines the key ideas, scholarly debates, and research activities that have contributed to the formation of the international and interdisciplinary field of Metal Studies. Drawing on insights from a wide range of disciplines including popular music, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, philos- ophy, and ethics, this volume offers new and innovative research on metal musicology, global/local scenes studies, fandom, gender and metal identity, metal media, and commerce. Offering a wide-ranging focus on bands, scenes, periods, and sounds, contributors explore topics such as the riff-based song writing of classic heavy metal bands and their modern equivalents, and the musical-aesthetics of Grindcore, Doom and Drone metal, Death metal, and Progressive metal. They interrogate production technologies, sound engi- neering, album artwork and band promotion, logos and merchandising, t-shirt and jewelry design, and the social class and cultural identities of the fan communities that define the global metal music economy and subcul- tural scene. The volume explores how the new academic discipline of metal studies was formed, while also looking forward to the future of metal music and its relationship to metal scholarship and fandom. With an international range of contributors, this volume will appeal to scholars of popular music, cultural studies, social psychology and sociology, as well as those interested in metal communities around the world. Andy R. Brown is Senior Lecturer in Media Communications at Bath Spa University, UK. Karl Spracklen is Professor of Leisure Studies at Leeds Metropolitan Uni- versity, UK. • Viking, Pagan Or Folk? Distinguishing Possibilities for Metal Sub-Genres
ČLANCI ALEXANDER HOFMANN VIKING, PAGAN OR FOLK? DISTINGUISHING POSSIBILITIES FOR METAL SUB-GENRES Izvorni znanstveni članak / Original Scholarly Paper UDK: 78.036 "19/20" aBStraCt The different sub-genres of metal music, which have formed in the last decades, are not only of interest due to their diverse and unique characteristics, but also evidence a variety in metal music whereby its clichéd black and gloomy world gains a bit of color. This multitude of sub-genres will inevitably lead to musicians, fans and even researchers no longer being able to differentiate between the genres. With Viking, pagan, and folk metal, this interesting process of fusion is already taking place, although it is possible to distinguish Viking and pagan at least from folk metal. Keywords: instrumentation, metal sub-genres, musical analysis, popular music introDuCtion During the last few decades many different metal sub-genres have developed, from the classic, and especially from the extreme, metal genre. Comprising bands such as Ensiferum, Finntroll, Korpiklaani and Turisas – surprisingly only Finnish bands – so-called folk metal is one of these sub-genres, which became part of the metal mainstream during the 2000s.1 For Spracklen the popularity of Finnish folk metal is based on commercialization, while other possible reasons could be the national distinction from Norwegian black and Swedish death metal, or, at least in Finland, a phase of increased inclusion of folk elements in popular music. “The combination of a nationally institutionalized folk tradition and the transnational genre of […] metal”2 is also mentioned by Neilson as a reason for the success of Finnish folk metal.

….. and the Shifting Geography of the Music Industry Student: Philippe Soret Student Number: 4169808 Advisor: Dr. Huib Ernste Date: June 30, 2013 Word Count: 33,159 1 Preface Relapse Records has been a central pillar of my life since I started working there at age 18. My love of challenging and difficult music has been a part of my life even longer though. As I have worked in the industry through the years, I’ve seen many changes and developments that have been both alarming and reassuring from music that was previously relegated to the underground now being more freely accessible but, at the same time, watching revenue streams shrink on a seemingly weekly basis. This thesis is a manifestation of my desire to better understand the music industry through the eyes of one record label, and bring my experiences and ground these experiences in geographic thought and study. My biggest help in this has been my wife, Laura, who has quietly let me work 80-hour weeks with rarely a complaint. Without her, this thesis could not have been completed.
