Development of this landmark project in Atlanta reflected the planning , and lobbying efforts of prominent local citizens.

  • Politics in Flux: the Georgians Behind the Republicanization of the South
Politics in Flux: The Georgians Behind the Republicanization of the South DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Mindy J. Farmer Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Susan M. Hartmann, Advisor Kevin Boyle Paula Baker Copyright by Mindy J. Farmer 2011 Abstract This dissertation examines the Republicanization of Georgia, 1948-1984, through the lens of three Georgian counties that exemplify the key social and economic divides that permeate the South. Pierce and Hancock are both rural, agricultural counties, with economies and, up until the last five years, populations in a steady decline, but while Pierce County’s citizens are primarily white, Hancock County’s are solidly African American. In comparison, DeKalb County, which contains a portion of the Atlanta metropolitan area, has steadily become more ethnically, racially, and economically diverse with Atlanta’s growth. In 1948, both Pierce and Hancock were part of the Democratic Solid South. Today, in state and national elections, Pierce votes solidly Republican and Hancock solidly Democratic, while for local offices Pierce, like Hancock County, continues to vote Democratic. In DeKalb, just as it was in 1948, neither party can claim a definitive hold on the electorate. I argue that that race and class are so intertwined in the story of the South’s realignment that the role of each is key to understanding the local voters’ decision to change their political party. In keeping with the timeline of those who criticize the myth of southern exceptionalism, I show how the Republican party emerged in DeKalb County the 1940s as a class-based institution introduced by postwar transplants.

FINDING AID FOR Techwood-Clark Howell Homes and Centennial Place records 2014.0002 User-Friendly Archival Software Tools provided by v1.2 2014.0002 Techwood-Clark Howell Homes and Centennial Place records. -- 1930s-2011 and undated. -- 10 Cubic feet (20 boxes) Scope and Content The collection consists of project records, tenant association records, publications, photographs, and artifacts of Techwood and Clark Howell Homes, and its redevelopment as Centennial Place. Techwood Clark Howel Homes was a site of training for First Aid war workers. In 1943, Atlanta Housing signed an agreement with the War Housing Center, the National Housing Agency, and the Federal Public Housing Authority that permitted migrate war-workers to be placed in Techwood and Clark Howell Home units. Certain items within the collection document active community participation during the Second World War. The publication The Techwood News Vol. 3 No. 8 in November 4, 1942 contains the article "Moonlit Blackout," which describes the regular surprise blackouts that were held at Techwood and Clark Howell Homes. The collection also contains a notecard the tenant association delivered to the men in armed forces, circa 1940s. HISTORICAL NOTE: In 1941, Atlanta Housing's third annual report demonstrated the dire conditions precipitating the completion of low rent public housing. These areas were infested with a large percentage of the city's crime, disease, deaths, and substandard living conditions: "4 out of 5 [houses] lacked either an inside bath or running water or both. It was common to find a whole family living in a single shabby, filthy room." Houses were stacked and leaning against each other, in need of repairs and infested with vermin.

Eberhard: Georgia Archives in Mass Media History GEORGIA ARCHIVES IN MASS MEDIA HISTORY Wallace B. Eberhard General knowledge of Georgia journalism history rests heavily on two figures, Henry Woodfin Grady and Ralph Emerson McGill; yet, resources are available to add more meaningful information to both the scholarly and popu lar literature of mass communications. Though no one ar chive holds material sufficient to reveal the entire story, there are excellent resources in Georgia for students and scholars wishing to add to, or to reinterpret, knowledge in this area. This article will outline some of the major hold ings in mass media history available around the state. The information was distilled from correspondence and (in most cases) a personal visit to the archive in question. In general, the search was limited to those manuscripts and other holdings related to Georgia journalism and journalists. Thus, writers whose work was wholly in the field of fiction were excluded; those whose work straddled the line between traditional journalism and other literary fields were included.

.ATTITUDES TOWARDS NEGROES AS REFLECTED IN THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 1908-1918 A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ATLANTA UNIVERSITY IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF AETS BY EUGENE PIERCE WALKER DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY ATLANTA, GEORGIA AUGUST 1969 TABLE OF CONTENTS Page INTRCDUCTION 1 Chapter I. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND h II. POLITICAL AND SOCIAL MAGE 9 III. ECONOMIC IMAGE 19 IV. EDUCATIONAL IMAGE 23 V. THE REELECTION OF NEGROES IN WORLD WAR I 29 CONCLUSION 33 BIBLIOGRAPHY ..... 3$ ii INTRODUCTION How did the Atlanta Constitution view Georgia Negroes from the time of their legal disfranchisesnt in 1908, until the end of World War I in 1918? Most newspapers, North and South, in the early years of the century ignored Negroes in their news columns except for their crimes.1 Many newspapers, notably in the Atlanta race riot of 1906 and the dis turbances in Columbia, Tennessee, in 19^6, have actually contributed to racial dissension through inflammatory and sensational treatment of p Negroes. Since this is true, a more penetrating study of the atti tudes of newspapers toward Negroes becomes increasingly important. This study will focus on the attitudes towards Negroes as reflected in the Atlanta Constitition from 1908 through 1916. Although the Constitution will serve as the primary source for illumination, the Atlanta Independent and other works pertinent to the study will be used in an effort to find possible answers to questions raised in the study. In an attempt to visualize the attitude of the Constitution toward Negroes, two aspects relative to coverage of Negroes have been considered.
