With two big matches due to be played, we were confdent sitting down to watch one, while the Lother later that evening always had an air of the unknown about it. Our match in Dalymount was the epitome of a match of two halves as we could have been out of sight by half time but even with a 2-0 cushion you could be confdent enough of holding or indeed adding to that. So the two Longford goals were a bit of a kick in the gut in a second half where they seized on a bit of rustiness our end to pull the defcit back. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one shouting ‘Oh shut the hell up!’ at Stephen Alkin when Premier Division he wondered aloud whether Longford would have time for a winner. Not 1923/24, 1927/28, a chance of a winner, I hasten to add, but time for a winner, as if it were a 1929/30, 1933/34, foregone conclusion. Thankfully they didn’t and we grumbled and whined 1935/36, 1974/75, and sat down later for more what would turn out to be the imperfect day. 1977/78, 2000/01, Now while we could reason that Bohs relatively bad start to this 2002/03, 2008, 2009 season didn’t refect on anything that had gone before nor in the long- term impinge on our confdent expectations of another good campaign FAI Cup ahead, the same could not be said for Stephen Kenny’s Ireland. The arrival 1927/28, 1934/35, of Luxembourg heralded his tenth match at the helm and offered ample 1969/70, 1975/76, opportunity for his reign to continue on its miserable run. And so it 1991/1992, 2000/01, proved as an increasingly confdent Luxembourg won the game to chalk up, probably, our worst result in competitive international football. 2008 But the bigger picture is interesting. Michael O’Neill’s tenure of League Cup Northern Ireland begun with an 18-game streak that included one win and 1974/75, 1978/79, 2009 competitive defeats against Luxembourg, Azerbaijan and Portugal. However he was afforded time and turned results around to record a remarkable Setanta Cup period for football in the North. Will Stephen Kenny be afforded such time? 2010 Who knows. He at least deserves to see out the campaign, using the remaining matches to build the base of a decent unit. But time will tell if Leinster Cup that happens or if we’ll yet again be starting afresh. 1895/95 - 2016: A record 32 titles LoI Shield Alan Bird, Editor 1923/24, 1927/28, Contact: [email protected] 1928/29, 1933/34, Editor/Production: Alan Bird 1938/39, 1939/40 Contributors: Tony Magner, Stephen Burke, Robert McDonald, Dan McSwiney, Ryan Clarke, Aidan Fitzmaurice, Paul Walsh, Declan Far- Irish FA Cup rell, Gerard Farrell, Keith Long, Chris Brien 1907/08 Photos: Stephen Burke, Eddie Lennon, Martin Doherty, Conor Ryan, Peter O’Doherty, Sportsfile Dublin City Cup Sales: Gerry Juhel, Ray Larkin, Killian Molloy, Timothy Boland, Joe Collins, 1935/36 Cormac Hurrell, Oran Tully RIP Printed by: Just-Print. There is no doubt that we are all disappointed with our results and performances in the opening two games and there would be not better way to get our season fully up and running with a win against The Saints tonight. That of course will be very diffcult against a St. Pat’s side who themselves will be brimming with confdence with a last minute winner against Drogheda last Saturday and a draw away at Rovers on the opening night. Last Saturday we squandered a two goal lead at home to Longford. We had the better of the play for most of the game and should have been a goal or two more to the good before conceding the frst goal. We looked nervous after that and Longford to their credit took advantage. We will need to improve and it is important that we do not come away from the values that have served us well in recent seasons. It will take time for new players coming to a new club with different demands being placed on them but the basics of the game remain the same, and need to be respected. There have been some positives in the form of Ross Tierney over the opening two games ‘We will need to improve and it was great for Georgie Kelly to open his account for the club against Longford and on and it is important that another day he could have had a hat-trick. we do not come away Tonight’s game gives us an opportunity to show our mettle. We understand the task from the values that ahead and it will be diffcult against a very good have served us well St. Patrick’s Athletic team. Our focus is on trying to win the game we must do the basics in recent seasons... well, work hard, be aggressive and function as tonight’s game gives us a team. If we can do that we will give ourselves a chance to win. an opportunity to show our mettle’ Enjoy the game, Keith Keith Long, Manager The Bohemian Football Club Treat Yourself To A Good Night’s Sleep. A I hope you are all keeping safe and well. The start of the season has not been kind to us and last week’s draw to Longford felt worse than our defeat to Finn Harps. Still, I have total faith in Keith, Trevor and the lads to turn it around, starting with today’s game against St. Pat’s. I know our expectations were high coming into the season and that should still be the case.
