Chairmans Notes:

I would like to use my Chairman’s notes message in this the first Posh Trust newsletter of the 2016/17 season to welcome back all Posh fans to what promises to be an exciting new season for the football club and for us as a Trust. The Trust would, in particular, like to wish Grant McCann and his team the very best for the upcoming challenges of the League One season. It is great to feel the surge of August optimism and positivity around the club and long may that continue!

Thinking about fresh starts and new beginnings, I would urge all of you reading this who have not yet visited the continually growing online Posh Trust Museum of Peterborough United to visit www.theposhtrust.co.uk/museum There is a truly amazing wealth of information, photographs, statistics and stories from everything from badges and books, through to club crests, team photos and memorabilia. If you have checked out the site before, then please do again as it is regularly updated with new information and images. Make sure you take a look!

I would also especially like to appeal to everyone reading these notes to ask for your support in ensuring the future of the Trust is as successful as it possibly can be. The Posh Trust Board are always looking for support to help the Trust continue to grow. Whether you have some spare time on a match day, or are keen to find out about what becoming a Board member of the Trust entails then please get in touch. We are always looking for enthusiastic and committed fans who want to support the principles of the Supporters’ Trust movement and Peterborough United Football Club. To those of you who are already Trust members or supporters, I would like to say a massive thank you for your support - and to those of you who would like to know more, I would encourage you to check out our website www.theposhtrust.co.uk, follow us on Twitter @PoshTrust and get in touch or come and find us at our stall in the Family Stand. It is after all only with the support of Posh fans and the local community that the Trust will prosper.

One date for your diary is Monday 14 November, when the Posh Trust will be holding its Annual General Meeting at 7-30pm, at Peterborough United Football Club (Sponsors Lounge). It would be great to see as many of you there as possible. Following the formal business, there will be an opportunity for a question and answer session with Trust Board members and the chance to find out more about what the Trust does and how you can get involved.

Finally from me, I would like to announce my intention to step down from the Chairman’s role of the Posh Trust at the AGM. My work commitments in the upcoming twelve months mean that I am going to be unable to dedicate as much time to the Trust as I would ideally like and I do not want the Trust to be adversely affected by this. I will though be remaining on the Posh Trust Board in an active role, as I have done since our very beginning in 2002 and am looking forward to supporting everything else that we will achieve in the future for the Club.

Did You Know?...... A real Hat-Trick Many players have scored hat-tricks during their lifetime, but few have the claim to fame that former West Ham and England defender Alvin Martin has regarding hat-tricks. In West Ham's 8-1 home win against Newcastle United in April 1986, Martin scored three goals against three different goalkeepers—making him the only player to score his hat-trick in such a fashion.

The defender netted his first goal against Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Thomas, who was then replaced by Chris Hedworth due to injury. Martin scored against the substitute keeper, who was then replaced by Peter Beardsley toward the end of the match, whom he promptly scored against to complete his unusual but remarkable feat. The Chris Turner Statue Appeal A group of long term POSH got together immediately after the passing of Chris to discuss the possibility of commemorating the great man in such a way that fellow POSH and football fans in general could pay their respects. The most visually impressive way it was quickly agreed would be a bigger than life size statute and so this massive project began.

When we as football fans travel all over the country and see the amazing statues outside other grounds like Portman Road, Elland Road, St Mary’s and the Stadium of Light, we tend to take in their beauty and walk away.

Now, despite the many logistical hurdles that have to be overcome, the committee of the statue fund are totally committed to honour Chris Turner with a statue of quality, here at London Road.

We have commissioned one of the elite sporting statue sculptors, Mr Seam Hedges Quinn who is a football fan and Ipswich Town season ticket holder, and Yes, the score 7-1 is often mentioned. Sean is responsible for the amazing statues of Sir Alf Ramsey, Sir Bobby Robson, and Bob Stokoe and his amazing work can be seen on his website:- www.seanhedgesquinn.co.uk

The cost of this massive project, with the commissioning of the statue, the base, plinth, delivery, erection, planning and general maintenance will be in excess of £75.000. However massive and frightening this amount is, the committee are more than confident that the POSH faithful will get behind the finished product that will give us all a focal point on match days where we can pay our respects, use it as a meeting point (“meet you at Chris”) and be something to be proud of in the knowledge that we, the POSH fans had paid for this wonderful tribute.

Despite only starting the fundraising in November, we are justifiably proud that we have reached the amazing figure of just over £52,000 to date, which means we are agonisingly close to our fundraising target of £80,000 already. This amount was of course boosted by our friends in the Supporters Trust with their generous £5,000 donation a few months ago, and we have had further support from Forever Posh and PISA 2000 with roughly the same amounts showing that despite what many think, all 3 groups work together quite amicably.

Due to the success of the CT5 Club :-- www.thechristurnerstatue.co.uk/about-ct5/ we also have a cash income which is by far the most important input to our funds with approximately £1,100 being banked every month. We are confident we will reach our target relatively soon but of course we need more fans to make regular donations, and the CT5 Club is the easiest and most economical way for POSH to get involved.

There are various things in the pipeline to accelerate the progress and of course if you have any ideas to help us then please contact us. Our website answers most questions you may have.

Many thanks to the Trust for their support, and for including this message in their newsletter.

THE AFC WIMBLEDON STORY and SUPPORTERS DIRECT (SD) update

Looking at the teams we face in our League this season, one name stands out for me, and that’s AFC Wimbledon.

This is partly because of their stellar move up the Leagues (6 promotions and no relegations in 13 seasons, starting at the ninth tier of English football) since the club’s formation by fans in 2002, culminating in their amazing Wembley win in the League 2 playoff final last season in front of an astonishing 57,956 people. I was lucky enough to be one.

Famously, the original Wimbledon football club was sold (effectively for property development) and booted up the M1 to Milton Keynes to become one of Posh’s new great rivals, the MK Dons. But the supporters never accepted the sale or the move and a new club was formed and is owned by the club’s supporters trust, the Don’s Trust.

The club has developed one of the outstanding Community Football Schemes attaining the highest FA charter standard and is probably one of the best examples of what a community club really looks like.

This is an epic story of what can be done in adversity and how fans can rally round, fund and run a football club efficiently, build it up to a high level and compete with traditional ownership models.

On the very day I’m writing this article the Mayor of London has announced that he is handing back the decision on building a new stadium on Plough Lane in Wimbledon, very close to the club’s original home, to Merton Council. This effectively means that a new 20,000 seat stadium is now likely to be built, and soon.

AFC Wimbledon is one of the highest profile and endearing stories in football fan club rescue history, but Supporters Direct has been helping dozens of supporter groups across the country to rescue, build and own or part-own their clubs.

In the process SD is proving that it is the supporters who are often the best owners as well as being the people who should count most over decisions that are made in a football club about the non-playing side.

As a direct result of SD’s help 12 new community owned football and rugby league clubs are likely to be formed this year in the UK, up from 7 the previous year. On top of that the level of knowledge and expertise available through SD has grown and can be invaluable to all supporters trusts, as and when they need it to help rescue and improve their clubs.

There are two other areas of SD’s recent efforts that are worth a mention here.

First, there is to be a more formal system introduced for the frequently contentious area of discussion between a club’s officials and board, and the supporters. This goes by the distinctly unexciting and unpromising name of “Structured Dialogue”.

But it’s very important because it is likely to mandate clubs in the and to discuss a range of particular issues with supporters and for the club to be more transparent over what it is doing, and planning to do, away from the football side.

The aim is that a small group meeting made up of representatives of the supporters trust if there is one, and of other democratically elected groups, will discuss, and be able to ask about, the club’s strategy, its financial position and financial plans, board membership, compliance with “Financial Fair Play” rules, and the senior responsibility roles at the club.

This is partly the result of fans often being kept in the dark about important developments at a club and partly for the club to be able to consult and inform supporters in a semi-private or occasionally completely private way. It is worth noting that Peterborough United has done this pretty effectively over many years, meeting with representatives of the three supporter groups, but like all things, it could be improved.

At the recent Supporters Summit at , the new chairman of the Football League, Ian Lenagan, said that the English Football League Board had committed itself to this structured dialogue approach. It was Supporters Direct that drove this issue via the government’s “Expert Working Group” on football, which showed just how much government and MPs are behind the implementation of better governance, and more supporter involvement in that governance, of clubs.

Second, Supporters Direct is looking at developing a “kitemark” system for clubs that will clearly demonstrate which clubs have good governance characteristics and which engage well with supporters.

Fans would then be able to see how their club matched up against others and could lobby their clubs where they thought improvements would help the relationship with supporters and promote the overall sustainability of the club and its strategy.

Finally and although I don’t have any up to date figures it is encouraging to see far fewer higher tier clubs going bust or into administration. There are a number of reasons. The economic recovery and very low interest costs are likely to be helping and the football authorities are more vigilant than before. “Financial Fair Play” rules may be helping as well.

But the very high profile campaigns by supporters against badly run clubs and the fear that taking more financial risks might lead to more trouble from fans and a make life more uncomfortable for failing clubs and directors must be a factor in slowly generating better management at clubs. Fans at clubs like Charlton and Blackburn Rovers amongst quite a few others will recognise that there is still a long way to go.

Pete's 'Memory' Lane ~ 'Simply The Best!'

For the second successive season Posh were once again to play away to Fulham in the Football League Cup, on Tuesday 31 August 1976. On that first occasion saw us going through to Round Four with a goal from Dave Gregory. Could history repeat itself?

The match signified the return of the 'Prodigal Son – Rodney Marsh' to Craven Cottage, after 10 years. Marsh started his career at Fulham and had just returned after signing from America's Tampa Bay Rowdies. Fulham were also hoping to include George Best, but were still waiting for his transfer forms to be sorted from America.

Posh, not overawed by Marsh's return, soon got into their stride and , alongside Chris Turner, were organising well at the back. Bobby Doyle was an inspiration in midfield, whilst up front Gregory was at his jinking best as well as , both served well from winger .

Fulham took the lead on 31 minutes when Ernie Howe passed down the wing to Les Barrett. He sent a cross over, intended to be a pass, but instead it sailed over the top of Posh goalkeeper Eric Steele's head and flew into the top of the net from 30 yards.

After the break again Posh started well, Robson's persistence won a corner, the ball was cleared back to him where he returned it into the box; sprinting in to the area Doyle connected to send a fierce header past goalkeeper Peter Mellor into the roof of the net on 55 minutes. Posh had to endure a hectic final 35 minutes and Bobby Moore even had a rare venture into the Posh half trying to urge his team on. Steele went on to make great saves by first diving at John Evanson's feet, then prevented Barrett's effort at the foot of the left post. Two minutes from time Steele saved the day by magnificently turning a famous Marsh 'bender' free kick round the post. A great result by 's team to hold the Fulham 'All Stars' for a replay.

Result: Fulham 1-1 Posh Scorers: Fulham: Barrett [31]; Posh: Doyle (55); Fulham: Mellor, Cutbush. Strong, Slough, Howe, Moore, Bullivant, Evanson, Busby, Marsh, Barrett, Sub: Dowie Posh: Steele, Hindley, Walker, Doyle, Turner, Carmichael, Oakes, Gregory, Moss, Cozens, Robson, Sub: Hodson Attendance: 10,222

A large crowd if 16,476 flocked into London Road for the replay, far more than you would normally expect, except this match was even more special because the great George Best had just signed for Fulham and making his debut against Posh! WOW! Best, Marsh, Moore! What opposition.

During those early minutes of the game Posh matched their showbiz counterparts with attractive soccer. Although most eyes were on Best who showed some deft touches and came close to scoring bringing a good save from Eric Steele. It was our very own David Gregory earning the plaudits when cleverly showing his skills by twisting past Marsh in the area. This even had Marsh standing to applause Gregory's own magic. Marsh then displayed his trickery bringing another fine save from Steele.

Five minutes before the break was a moment to savour when the elegant Moore fed Marsh with a short pass, who in turn found Best. Casually he flicked the ball up into the air and without looking, amazingly from 30 yards he let fly with a superb dipping volley with his right foot sending the ball flying over Steele, into the top of the net. Both sets of fans acknowledged what an incredible goal was scored by the genius of Best. This was probably the ‘Best’ goal I have ever witnessed at London Road, despite that other wonder goal by our own , against Huddersfield Town – October 2012.

Shortly after the interval it was Posh turning it on with Keith Oakes firing inches wide from 30 yards. This was soon followed by the Best and Marsh show thrilling the crowd like a couple of pop stars, with their long flowing locks loving every minute as they exchanged passes to tear through the Posh defence finishing with Best sending a swerving shot just wide of a post. In the 77th minute Marsh crossed to Alan Slough whose shot cannoned off Jack Carmichael, the ball then hit Slough to go into the net for a freak goal.

Posh sent centre-half Chris Turner up front and soon paid dividends when he passed on to sub Jim Walker, his cross was then headed home from Tommy Robson in the 85th minute. From then on up to the final whistle it was Posh to stage a grandstand finish, Robson so unlucky to see his close range shot bounce off the legs of Mellor. In the last minute full- back Peter Hindley sent a pile driver crashing the underside of the bar from 18 yards only bouncing to safety.

Not too despondent, Posh fans had witnessed football at its BEST.

Result: Posh 1-2 Fulham; Scorers: Posh: Robson (85); Fulham: Best (40), Slough (77) Teams: Posh: Steele, Hindley, Lee, Doyle, Turner, Carmichael, Oakes, Gregory, Moss, Cozens, Robson Sub: Walker (for Cozens 45) Fulham: Mellor, Cutbush, Strong, Slough, Howe, Moore, Best, Evanson, Busby, Marsh, Barrett, Sub: Bullivant Attendance: 16,476

Mind your Head Celtic's first choice keeper Ronnie Simpson was hit on the head by a brick as he warmed up for a 2nd leg match against Racing Club of Argentina in the Intercontinental Cup in 1967. He was subsequently injured and couldn’t continue which resulted in reserve keeper John Fallon playing. Celtic lost the game and tried to get the second leg declared void because of the Simpson incident. However Fallon distinguished himself with a string of saves and according to Sir Robert Kelly in his book Celtic, when Celtic tried to get the second leg declared void because of the Simpson incident, Racing Club used Fallon's heroic performance as their counter argument. ------Guess what - the result stood!

Local Derbies The Isles of Scilly Football League is officially the smallest football league in the world. The league features just two teams—Garrison Gunners and the Woolpack Wanderers who play each other every week in the league to determine who will be the champions for that season. Played from November to late-March, the two teams play 17 times over the course of a season, with the champions coming from a typical first-past-the- post system. But they still receive plenty of knockout action as well, with The Wholesalers Cup and the Foredeck Cup—which are both played over two legs—as well as a Charity Shield that customarily kicks off the action-packed season ahead.

Transfer fees In 1998 Ion Radu, a Romanian midfielder was sold by Second Division Jiul Petrosani to Valcea during the official transfer window—all of which sounds normal however he wasn't sold for a monetary price or value. The midfielder was sold for 500 kg of pork, which was worth about roughly £1750 at the time of sale. Had Paul Pogba's transfer to Man Utd from Juventus been for the rumoured figure of £100 million, that equates to around nearly 29 million kilograms of pork. Or around 630,000 pigs.

Sold for sausage meat Another Romanian player, Marius Cioara was sold by UT Arad to Regal Hornia in 2006 for 15 kilograms of sausage meat. Cioara however, was not happy and left his new side after just one day because he was relentlessly abused by teammates in relation to the circumstances surrounding his move.

Goals - Goals – Goals Posh recently have scored goals for fun, however we have nothing on Australia who managed to score 53 goals in just two consecutive World Cup qualifying games. They secured a 22-0 win over Tonga on April 9 2001 before romping to a 31-0 win against American Samoa just two days later on April 11, 2001.

A Dose of his Own Medicine During the 1930 World Cup semi final between Argentina and the United States, the American trainer sprinted onto the pitch to argue with the referee. In the process he threw his medical bag to the ground, opened a bottle of chloroform and then collapsed to the ground as he’d knocked himself out. Keep it Posh! Ray Cole YOUR RESPONSE / ENQUIRY
