What else must the church witness to than the resurrection of the crucified One, who is present in its midst through the preaching of the gospel and the administration of the sacraments? Oh, yes, we have to spin out the mean Ing of the cross and resurrection of Christ; we have to celebrate it worthily and compellingly in our public assemblies; we have to reorder our lives In conformity with its implications, turning away from the way of the world and toward the new life under Christ's reign; we have to invite others to reorder their lives according to this new reality for the world; and we want to invite them to join us in a community of proclamation and celebration. But in essence, the mission of the church is to proclaim that Jesus, who taught God's will for the world and was crucified for doing so, was raised from the dead by his God and Father; and this same crucified and risen One will come again as judge and universal ruler. The eschatological reign of God has been inaugurated In the resurrection of Jesus and in the mis sion of proclaiming this good news. This can only mean that the reality of the world is being changed. Many people don't like having their world altered, and they may react negatively toward the messengers of this world-changing proclamation. -

This study found 4 major categories that construct digital citizenship: Ethics, Media and Information Literacy, Participation/Engagement, and Critical Resistance. Based on these comprehensive and interconnected categories of digital citizenship, the author argues that digital citizenship needs to be understood as a multidimensional and complex concept in connection with an interrelated but non-linear relationship with offline (place-based) civic lives. About Us Masthead This new history of roughly three decades opens with the fall and death of the Irish political leader Charles Stewart Parnell in 1891 and ends with the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1921, shadowed immediately by Civil War. It also Feedback opens and closes with quotations from Ireland's most famous poet of the period, W. B. Yeats, whose once controversial and now celebrated poem "Easter 1916" furnishes the title of the book: I have met them at close of day Coming with vivid faces From counter or desk am ong grey Eighteenth-century houses. Since Foster is Yeats's official biographer, author of the two-volume standard life, it is not surprising that he refers to Yeats intermittently throughout this book. Yet what happens between the opening and closing references is anything but Yeatsian. Instead, Foster ranges not only through printed books and articles but also through unpublished diaries and manuscript archives. As Charles Cowden Clarke wrote of his pupil and later friend John Keats's first encounter with Spenser's Faerie Queen, Foster has evidently gone through these sources "ramping." His omnivorous diligence results in a detailed revisionist portrait of the revolutionary generation and its members, including more women than usual in such accounts. -

This project argues that to neglect Bloom’s preoccupation with Gnosticism is to miss a profound opportunity to shift from the conception of Gnosticism as a static entity capable of study to a Gnosticism that takes the form of a methodology, or dynamic process. Bloom’s early fascination with Gnosticism in the late 1970s offers a unique chance to understand Gnosticism through his most well-known theory of the anxiety of influence. -

Gerald Bradford Every now and then a book is written about Mormonism which by all accounts is fascinating, meaning that it both attracts and repels its readers. On the whole, the insights in such books override their points of inaccuracy. The authors of such works usu- ally stand outside the LDS tradition, are recognized as intellectuals, and come from the world of academia. Nearly forty years ago, for example, Thomas F. O’Dea wrote The Mormons (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1957). His treatment of Latter-day Saints, ostensibly from a sociological per- spective but going far beyond any single discipline, was just such a book. Coming to his subject from a somewhat modified Marxist view, O’Dea revealed, between the lines, that he had a soft spot in his heart for the Mormons and that, in some important respect, he had genuinely understood what was distinctive and worthwhile about the religion. Another equally fascinating book about the Mormons and other religious groups in the United States is Harold Bloom’s The American Religion. Bloom is an internationally recognized liter- ary critic. What he says about the LDS tradition, Joseph Smith, and the future of the Church, has engendered a wide range of responses. The gap in this series, the volume on the clergy of the Middle Colonies, was proving such a great hindrance to our revision of Evans' American Bibliography, that we have decided to print this volume for our own use, and to publish it in order to share it with others. The first volume of this series. The Colonial Clergy and the Colonial Churches of New England (Lancaster, 1936), is out of print. The Colonial Clergy of Maryland, Delaware, and Georgia (Lancaster, 1950), and The Colonial Clergy of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina (Boston, 1955) may be obtained of the author (at Dublin, New Hampshire) for $3 a volume. The institutional data which is provided at the end of the New England volume is for the other colonies issued in a separate volume. Wilson ii ABSTRACT Jack Santino, Advisor While Mormons were once the “black sheep” of Christianity, engaging in communal economic arrangements, polygamy, and other practices, they have, since the turn of the twentieth century, modernized, Americanized, and “Christianized.” While many of their doctrines still cause mainstream Christians to deny them entrance into the Christian fold, Mormons’ performance of Christianity marks them as not only Christian, but as perhaps the best Christians. At the annual Mormon Miracle Pageant in Manti, Utah, held to celebrate the origins of the Mormon founding, Evangelical counter- Mormons gather to distribute literature and attempt to dissuade pageant-goers from their Mormonism. The hugeness of the pageant and the smallness of the town displace Christianity as de facto center and make Mormonism the central religion. Cast to the periphery, counter-Mormons must attempt to reassert the centrality of Christianity. Counter-Mormons and Mormons also wrangle over control of terms. These “turf wars” over issues of doctrine are much more about power than doctrinal “purity”: who gets to authoritatively speak for Mormonism. Meanwhile, as Mormonism moves Christianward, this creates room for Mormon fundamentalism, as small groups of dissidents lay claim to Joseph Smith’s “original” Mormonism. Manti is home of the True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Last Days, a group that broke away from the Mormon Church in 1994 and considers the mainstream church apostate, offering a challenge to its dominance in this time and place. -
